They pretend to tackle them, and then go and obscure the really hard choices and morals behind cheap plot twists that make a villain a unforgivable monster, or introduce some sympathetic ploy that allows a popular character to be "redeemed". Worse yet, they'll try to be "edgy" by introducing some horrible tragic event out of the blue, just to appear more serious. Avatar is a complete package series, to be honest. If all you want is a consistent story and cool characters, you can look elsewhere for better stuff. However, Avatar does something special by creating an entire world that is well developed and well planned - the entire world itself is clearly shaped, top to bottom, to accommodate benders. You have completely stylized animations and designs, notably different cultures, and a whole lot of sheer detail to take in. Consider a world like Naruto, for existence, that outright ignores 1/10 people being able to lift mountains, a single person being able to do an entire factory lines worth of work, etc., and it all aspects of society are basically "real life with ninjas". Well this is all targeted at Naruto but I have to agree. Naruto world even tho epic is not well thought out at all. Avatar had a very set a realistic world and did throw anything at you out of nowhere. The world in naruto however is a complete mess and is poorly conceived

It tackles mature themes, but so does the number one shounen example NARUTO (genocide, war zones, cold war, experiments on humans, death in general). The best indicator that DN is Shounen is the fact, that the manga was released in the biggest shounen magazine Weekly Shounen Jump, which features popular shounen like One Piece or the before mentioned Naruto. AVATAR is in my opinion the best cartoon I ever watched, but it doesn´t reach my all time favourite Shounen Full Metall Alchemist (both the original and Brotherhood), which also has IMO the best written Shounen Manga as source material. You should watch Stein's Gate if you haven't already. It's better than FMA imo, and FMA was my favourite for a very long time.

Myself though, I enjoyed it greatly. I really enjoyed the steampunk feel and a lot of the references. The animation was smooth and pretty as always. The world is colorful and the characters I liked them all except maybe Toph's kid. What I'm most interested in seeing is if there is any crazy new leaps in bending like we saw before with Toph being the (as far as we know) the first metalbender. The strongest levels of firebenders can shoot lightning and fly around with jet feet. Strong water benders on the full moon can bloodbend. I'd like to see some types, or tactics we haven't seen before, which I'm pretty sure we will.

Unsurprisingly, it also seems to be the case for this one.

Airbenders highly mobile but all around underpowered. Does it have to be 1-1-1 with fire/water/earth? Or can you be a dick and go triple earth for the constant spam.

But the early release gives me a bittersweet feeling. Not only do we have to wait for the show to release proper, but then we have to wait another whole week after that for the episode 3. I don't think I can wait that long 0_0. Amazing show though. I'll criticize its pacing, but its a one season show and so it's gotta move fast I guess.

I've seen most of those, and I did enjoy Avatar more. You might not think so. I like Avatar, and to be honest it has a different feel from it then most japanese Shounen (the original series). I'd honestly say it's the best children's cartoon to come out in the last 10 years. In terms of western culture it's a fantastic success. I love Clannad and Kanon the most out of any show, but I wouldn't think to compare them to Avatar because they are much different shows with different audiences in mind.
