That was a really boring episode. Next week is looking like it's going to be exciting at least

I feel like there's no conflict. I'm not feeling any tension. Only cool part was varrick creating the spirit bomb.

was kinda sad that the kuvira-korra talk was like 5 lines where korra's entire pov changes from "kuvira back down" into "suyin hand over the city". should've been a longer conversation imo. Good buildup into the next episode tho and the mechafight was awesome. good to see that bolin used lavabending in the end as well, still has it which might be vital.

+ Show Spoiler +
Yeah I think it's possible. On the one hand it is possible that she finally reached her limit, and on the other hand who knows how much she had to endure from Varrick in the past and how it compares to the current stuff. Acknowledging Kuvira as the greatest mind she's ever met is rather disingenuous, but she did look rather miffed when Varrick was captured.

Well I guess it has something to do with Suyin trying to use Korra as an attack dog from the get-go.
And she probably sees the Earth Kingdom descending into chaos due to the Red Lotus as part of her responsibilities that she neglected/wasn't strong enough to deal with at the time. Without an authority figure like Kuvira to step in and bring order, who knows how bad things would've gotten.
I mean the only thing that could've further sealed the deal would be Korra seeing 'King' Wu in person. The previous King had a better head on his shoulder and he was played so hard you'd think Long Feng was Korean.
Wu would've easily given more opportunities for other 'Long Fengs' to make their move.

I liked Asami's side-story. While it's not plot-relevant(as far as we know at least), it's nice to put some spotlight on that kind of thing.

+ Show Spoiler +
The Asami backstory is probably a lesson they want to teach people about forgiveness. That you should try to attempt it. I think the world cares too much for forgiveness. When people fuck up they deserve the consequences and aren't likely to change. Her dad was an asshole and seems like he wants to repent after years of prison but most people don't.

I'm not sure if Avatar State Korra could even stop Kuvira's army. It's massive and she's never been as threatening as Aang was in TLA except when she was godzilla sized.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

True enough.
Her Avatar State wasn't even that powerful in S2. Sure, her lack of spiritualiy back then may have weakened it, but now she doesn't have her past lives to boost her Avatar State power.

they are gonna fight.
zhu li makes the weaponized spirit vine energy able to empower korra's avatar state.
korra goes apeshit on kuvira's army.
and they live happily ever after.

I would love it if this season ended non-violently. The entirety of LoK has been about Korra learning to be less of a violent hothead. Plus, this is the final season, and is titled Balance. It'd be a perfect way to wrap things up.

I would too but the core audience (10 year-olds) would not stand for it.

Are they really the "core" audience, though? I kind of doubt that, lol.

I seriously doubt it. Especially since the online-only broadcast thing, on top of the aging of the characters through the 3-year gap.

However, Kuvira's rapid descent into aggressive madness sort of rules out a peaceful end.

I don't find it that unbelievable. Look at the subject matter, it obviously isn't tailored towards anything much past early teen years... maybe 10 is a bit short on the estimate, but 13-15 surely. Honestly, I'm not even sure why I watch it still sometimes... mostly because a couple artist buddies of mine would swear by ATLA to their graves.

I mean, obviously it's still a "kids" show, but it's pretty clear that the writers/creators know who their hardcore fanbase is.

I cannot think of a situation where a company produces a product tailored to anything other than their core audience. Sure, it still applies to people outside the bracket of "kids", but the core audience is still kids.

Yes, she she is totally playing Kuvira. There's no way she all of a sudden just finally got fed up with Verrick right then.

Agreed, Korra was like let me try to be diplomatic about thi.s Then proceeds to open with paraphrasing "turn around and leave this city at once."

Not sure. If you look at the themes they used, they started out about (racial) equality, then pollution, followed it up with the French revolution and anarchy and now Napoleon. They dont use excessive violence or sex or anything, but the story is clearly aimed at an older audience than 15 who get why the guy is killing the queen.

the thing about the avatar state is that you call on the power of the past avatars or something. past avatars don't really exist because raava was ripped out of korra. it makes perfect sense that her avatar state is garbage now

It was already "garbage" before Raava was ripped out of Korra, I thought that + Show Spoiler +
destroying the army in Avatar shape
is something that every avatar-mode we have seen so far (including Aangs) would have difficulties with.

Also the way I got it was that Raava provides raw power and the old avatars only provided experience. So on paper she can be of similar strength. Korra already got lots of battle experience, so she shouldnt be weakened by that much.

Well, Kioshi split that island in half, and Roku fought a volcano. I'd say wrecking one army shouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.

Hm I am really curious how the show creators are going to have Korra lose to Kuvira without it being stupid (if she was really recovered she should win and she has access to the avatar state so she shouldn't lose).

Was also a bit surprised that Varrick didn't want to create the weapon. I thought it was cool though as well because I have always liked varrick.

Zu lie (juli, I don't know) I am curious if she's faking the betrayal or serious. This ones hard, but I have a feeling she is acting.

I really hope it makes sense and not silly is really my only concern about their up coming fight that we know korra loses.

Can't wait to see next weeks episode regardless :D

When I was 12 there was a competition in my school to write an essay about Racism. By the time I was 15 I'd read a whole lot of stories much, much... darker, I guess? than the story TLoK is telling. I don't think underlying themes of revolution suggest the story is directed at a target audience older than 15. 15 isn't childish and immature, anymore.

If the story was wrought with tough moral or ethical choices and it wasn't so blindingly obvious who the good guys and bad guys are, I'd start to think that they'd discovered their core audience is 18-22. Since they don't show much of any real violence on screen and everything seems fairly consequence-free, it isn't hard for me to believe that the show's core demographic is in the early teen years. Ish.

Finally Bolin and Varrick figure out Kuvira isn't really that happy-go-lucky... took long enough -___-

Zhu Li is a real badass I'm with most people here: I highly doubt she actually meant everything she said to Kuvira at the end. I suspect Zhu Li will be the real hero who takes down Kuvira (or at least will be a major player there.)

Korra's diplomacy was, as usual, a spectacular failure. Woo-hoo. Su's nighttime raid is going to be quite the debacle as well...
