No, this is not a joke/trolling thread. We don't need more filler posts asking if it is.

It seems like half the point of the My Little Pony episode format is to build characters, so any out-of-character behavior doens't sit well with a lot of the audience. We identify with the ponies; that's why OOC behavior can be such a deal-breaker, especially if its the central premise of an episode. It seems like you didn't think the actions were OOC, which is fine. But that's different from liking the episode in spite of OOC behavior.
So could this be some character development, a hidden side of Fluttershy's behavior in SE1/2, an aggressiveness that she could get carried away with? Sure. But that development was handled with a kind of exaggeration that didn't seem believable.
No qualms with the theme and lesson; just the execution.

I can certainly agree with relating to the mane characters. Hell, I see much of myself in Twilight, RBD, and PP even! My thoughts on FS having this deep, repressed aggressive side, however, are my own. Alas! How I wish this show could be hour long episodes, where each character's backstory, personality, history, likes, dislikes, ect. could be discussed in full! One of my favorite shows was a little show called Firefly. If you haven't heard of it, go look it up, the level of characterization in that show is something I wish that this show could have as well.

The exaggeration I believe came from being such a short show. Many things had to be cut, and soft implied simply so the episode could fit 22 minutes, which is a damn shame for characters as deep as these. Again, many of my ideas are simply that: my ideas. I believe that FS, like I said in my first post, definitely had some deep down issues. Sure, she is a kind soul, that's not in dispute. Her flaw being a pony that needs to please everyone has it's drawbacks: namely, things that happened in today's episode may have happened her whole life, and she repressed it, which isn't healthy. I know, I speak from experience in that regard.

Imagine you are in FS's shoes(or, horseshoes, if you will.). All your life you have been a kind person, yet very nervous, shy, and timid. It's an unfortunate fact of life that these kids usually end up targets for bullies, as seen in FS's flashback in CMChronicles. Thankfully, you have a good friend, RBD, who protects you. You latch on to your first friend, and want to make them happy. Now, its canon that RBD, while still thinking the world of FS and would do anything for her, still gets irritated by her timidness simply due to clashing personalities. The things that RBD says in dragonshy wouldn't fall on deaf ears, but FS, being the kind soul she is, buries the bad thoughts and anger and sadness that she may feel when she hears things like that, going back to when she was a kid. Things like that, while able to be buried and forgotten for a while, can lie dormant and fester at any time, and I believe that it just happened to be this episode that released it.

Insert Iron Will and his brand of "Self Help". she tries it on stage, see's the crowd's reaction: "Hey, I was a jerk, and people didn't yell at me!" Not correct thinking at all, but realistically possible. Here's where the fact that the show is 22 mins long FRUSTRATES the hell out of me. We have NO IDEA how long it was between the free seminar, and the confrontation with her gardener. I like to think that she eventually signed up for private lessons, which would explain both where she got more of her oneliners, AND why Iron Will wanted payment for his services. After dealing with her gardener (who was "Over watering the flowers, AGAIN") She felt good. The happy giggle, the self-satisfied look on her face, it all pointed to someone who was a giver all their life, finally taking something for once, and enjoying the rush. I believe she got caught up in the new sensation of being a taker, an alpha-mare if you will, that once the scene came around with FS vs. PP and R, she temporarily forgot whom she was speaking to, and simply let her reflexes take over.

All in all, I believe this gives an even better reason to relate to Fluttershy! Her friends tried to stop her, would it have been more in character if she just gave up and rolled over? I don't think so. That would have been what "Old FS" would have done, and would have left FS feeling stale as a character.

Again, all my opinion though. Much of this comes from deep inspection of what may or may not be there; or may or may not be intended by Faust when writing these characters. I like to put my faith in Faust, thinking that she made deep characters with very real problems, even if they aren't so easily seen for a children's show.

Warning: wall of text incoming. The following is all my personal interpretation, taken from personal head-canon and thoughts. Take it as such.

+ Show Spoiler +

I'll start off by addressing the main complaint about the episode, that it was written by one Merriweather Williams. Personally I have never even looked up the writer of any episode, I feel that if there is a predisposition against the writer in question, IE; because she wrote another episode that people didn't like, that causes people to go into the episode already expecting to dislike it, and it makes it easier for people to nitpick and find things they don't like simply because they already dislike the writer. I personally thought Mare-do-well was a fine episode, certainly not enough to throw around hate for a new writer. You have to keep in mind that the show/dialogue/setting/whatever else for her episodes are NOT all on her, I would believe that everything would go through Faust (season 1) and Jayson (season 2), so there would be more approval from the higher ups in that regard. Try going into the rest of the episodes this season WITHOUT looking up the writer or anything else. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Now, on to the actual episode itself. Finally! A Fluttershy centered episode! The FS fans rejoiced as the opening scene showed that all too familiar cottage. It reminded me of a certain opening scene from back in season 1, namely Dragonshy. Fluttershy feeding all her pets/animals. The main thing that stuck out to me, as continuity goes from Dragonshy to this episode, is that her animals are starting to misbehave as a whole. Before, it was simply Angel (whom I'll get to in a minute) who was the one acting out. Angel was displeased with his food being the same, what looked to be store bought food as the others, and I would imagine that he felt entitled as FS's first and longest pet to a better meal. Now, if you look back to season 1's episodes, there has always been a sort of slapstick element when involving Angel. The punting of his carrot, and stomping around to get FS's attention in Dragonshy, and thumping his leg to get FS to go to Celestia's party in "A bird in the Hoof" That's the way I have always seen the FS - Angel relationship, so the slap wasn't too far extended from normalcy. Now, I believe that it was an extension of the moral of the episode, wherein everyone was taking advantage of FS and she needed to be assertive, Angel was simply used to the recessive, enabling behavior of FS and took advantage of it. Classical Conditioning at its finest. Cue to the market scene and the progression to PP and R convincing FS to get some "Help"

I loved the market scene. There were many slight references/influences here that I enjoyed greatly. PP and her Bugs Bunny acting, the Derpy spotting being disappointing that there was no more sprouts, ect. Tabitha was at her finest here as well, but the focus here was on FS and her character flaw, namely her shyness/nervousness allowing people to take advantage of it. Another complaint I saw about this scene came from the stall vendors. From what I saw, even though Equestria uses a currency system (Bits) it still seems to be early on in its use, where haggling and price adjustment are still on a case to case basis. The shopkeepers here are portrayed here as bad/evil, but the capitalist in me sees someone using supply and demand in their favor against someone who looks to be easy to be taken advantage of (again, back to the moral of the ep.) The cherry salesman had one cherry left, and when supply is low, he can charge high for it, especially when FS even TELLS him that she needs it and would pay whatever it takes to get it for Angel. Heavy focus on her flaw here, but it serves to remind the audience of the stacking nature of the problem. She can't say no to Angel ---> Needs the cherry for the excessive meal ----> is essentially blood in the proverbial water for entrepreneurs trying to make money. I wouldn't be surprised if AJ handled her Apple sales much in the same way.

On to Iron Will. Not much to say here, many people enjoyed the character, as did I. Now, the only reason FS is even here, is because her friends want her to be more assertive. Another character flaw in FS is her wish to please everyone in her life. Now, an "Expert" in self help shows up, and FS reluctantly tries out his ideas/techniques. Many self help guru's use the same type of strategies to help out their clients. Simple, easy to remember oneliners and self empowering statements that can be recalled easily even without the guru around. Unfortunately, the setup for this was NOT assertiveness, but nastiness. FS, who has rarely if ever been assertive, or even confrontational, tried out the guru's suggestion, and at seeing the crowd excited and happy, FS used the techniques she learned in her real life, on people and problems she already had. The result was that she enjoyed having power over ponies, and it made her feel great. Add to that the reinforcement by PP and R at Sugarcube Corner, and the stage was set for a continuation of the "Guru's one liners" in FS's immediate future.

This all came into the climax near the end of the episode where there was conflict between FS and PP - R. By this point, she was completely wrapped up in the mindset of assertive anger and aggressiveness. This scene, while very sad, is something that is very relate-able. I believe that FS always had this inner aggressiveness/dislike buried down, and instead of letting it out, she bottled it up. This episode, however, she let it out, much like her outburst at the GGG. In fact, the parallels between this ep and that one are uncanny, characterization-wise. After the conflict, FS sees her reflection, and finally realizes how she was acting, and immediately regrets it. FS to me is a character of two faces, the nice, domicile FS, and the aggressive, dragon-staring, cockatrice subduing FS. I believe that this episode was meant to make FS take the best from both sides of her personality, The kind, caring side and the assertive, smart, and savvy side of FS we saw at the end of the episode, using what she learned from Iron Will, but adapting it to be less aggressive and more assertive, I.E. more like a healthy "person" should be. I also liked the fact that Iron Will, once outsmarted, was not angry/depressed, instead learned his own lesson from FS, and planned on using that in his next seminar, showing him that his methods, while they may have worked, weren't the best way.

I really enjoyed this episode. I went in, saw the comedy, laughed OUT LOUD at several points, teared up once, and really enjoyed the story told of FS learning to expand her personality and grow as a character. I feel that many of you disliked the episode simply because your favorite pony (FS) was misbehaving/behaving in a way that you felt was OOC, however I disagree, as explained above. She acted well in character, it was just a side of FS we very, very, VERY rarely get to see, and is a part of a good character. This was an EXCELLENT episode. Of course, this is all simply my opinion. You are free to dislike things, and I have no place to say that you aren't allowed to dislike something. What I PERSONALLY dislike, are people disliking or even hating (ugh, that word) things based on silly things like who wrote what episode or things they saw as OOC. Remember, this show is a team effort. If there were things you disliked in this episode, it's not ONE person's fault. Thanks for reading, if you made it this far, I ♥ all of you guys =D

Also, I love the fact that a children's cartoon can invoke this kind of thought provoking discussion out of me. It's a refreshing change of pace!

The thing that bothers me about criticisms of these characters is that they are made out to be these narrowed personalities by fans, that cannot delve into other things or change at all. Fluttershy going bitch mode after being influenced by self-help nonsense is perfectly understandable by me, especially since I have also gone through that before too. Sometimes people take things too far when they try to change themselves, or go too fast, and it can change them drastically.

The way I saw it was more like this, she had spells of aggression because she was desperate to change, but it influenced her very negatively (and based off what I read before watching the episode, her aggression was completely exaggerated). She would recite one of the catch phrases and then go through with it, taking it like gospel, when she was going about it the wrong way (and it was taught in a poor way as well). When I watched the movie "The Secret," I went on this spree of being hyper optimistic (almost downright delusional) and became something that wasn't typically me. I got to the point to where I was being mean about it when people would be "negative" (basically, I interpreted things as negative that weren't really bad, kind of like how Fluttershy took Pinkie's laugh the wrong way). I got called out on it and re-evaluated myself, so I can sympathize with Fluttershy in this regard.

So to me it seems perfectly reasonable because it actually happens. As a result I find it to be a pretty good episode.

Now I'm in the minority here, but I actually like Merriwether Williams' episodes. Not as much as Larson or McCarthy or Rogers, but I enjoy them. While the characters tend to skirt along their established personalities, the variance in extremes is what gives them depth, see: Rarity.

So much LyraBon fanservice in this episode, my god.

So could this be some character development, a hidden side of Fluttershy's behavior in SE1/2, an aggressiveness that she could get carried away with? Sure. But that development was handled with a kind of exaggeration that didn't seem believable.
No qualms with the theme and lesson; just the execution. I'm surprised this got through Jayson, tbh, but maybe I'm letting my personal opinion on the episode interfere with the actual quality.

+ Show Spoiler +

+ Show Spoiler +

Now, I don't really have a passionate opinion about this episode, but I have to disagree with you somewhat. People don't just switch personalities rapidly like this, the only reason it was accepted before hand was because it was done by chaotic magic.
And maybe it would make sense that she had latent anger within her, but there needs to be some grounds within the show to say that; there needs to be a scene to point to. I'm sure you actually could find a decent transition point for her becoming aggressive, as about 80% of the episode is dealing with hat, what I think you can't justify as easily is her transition back to normal. There isn't even a cathartic moment or explanation, its avoided by use of a loophole.

None of the extreme episodes interest me (relative to all of the amazing episodes) because there is no complexity in the writing itself. Sure when you look at the grand scheme the character is a bit more complex (even that can be argued), but having entire episodic blocks donated to one facet of their character is rather dull...and besides; why does FS even need to learn this lesson again? She told off a dragon AND a chicken lizard that turns you to stone. We get it, she can enter boss mode when needed. They really need to stop using that as a crutch >_> .

In the end I guess I don't like it or hate it, which makes me feel like I don't like it because this show is so amazing.

Damn, that was a really really good episode. Yes, what fluttershy did was extreme, but it got across the point of the episode excellently. Rarity+Pinkie were utilized amazingly, and the background characters played an important role too. Best episode in a while.

Just watched the latest episode, have some thoughts as they come!
+ Show Spoiler +
I enjoyed it quite alot, I did not expect Iron Will to be a Minotaur and although I suspected they would exist in MLP it was cool to finally see one.

Perhaps it was because I was watching Absolutely Fabulous last night but I found Rarity quite hilarious in this episode, she uses what she has and if you fall for it that would be your problem darling!

Pinkie was funny as ever.

Fluttershy's tirade against Pinkie and Rarity towards the end was really harsh, not something I expected even when putting the ass in assertive. though the phrase "no one gives a flying feather" (I see what you did there!) did make me laugh quite a bit.

Overall it was an episode I enjoyed alot but I do hope we get to see more of Fluttershy being herself in the coming episodes

does anyone actually read all the spoilered comments I wonder? :p I read some at random.
Paint it bright and bold.

Watched the new ep yesterday and have had some time to mold it over. Here is my take:
+ Show Spoiler +
The episode started wonderfully. Allthough Angelbunny belongs to a monty python movie... Fluttershy was lovely the first half and heartbreaking the rest. I felt horrid watching it. Iron Will didnt leave any impression to me at start but his final lines were good. Actually the whole episode was redeemed right at the end. Giggled at Raritys and Pinky Pie's reactions so hard

The newest episode features a new voice from BonBon. That's what... her fourth?

The episode's overall lesson (it's possible to be assertive without being an asshole) is definitely a good one for children to learn, it just didn't teach it very well.

That aside, I thought it was entertaining. Iron Will is an awesome character.

What is it with all these negative receptions? It was a fantasic episode!

Pinkie and Rarity were hilarious. The gags were spot-on and I laughed several times about Pinkie's haggling and Rarity's flirting. Pinkie giggling is way too awesome, too.Ahihhahahihi. I also very much enjoyed the Iron Will character. Not an evil guy, certainly not a good guy, just a random motivator, a bit over the top but not too much. Like a person you would meet in real life in such a show.

And the main character, Fluttershy, was also very well portraied, despite what many TLers say.
The Angel bunny part was actually very good. You have to view Angel Bunny as a pet like a dog there because Angel Bunny is obviously not comparable to a real life bunny. If you have dogs or similar animals you know that if you spoil them too much without giving them rules they start to behave like that. They stop respecting you. And if you terrorize them they become scared and malicious. You have to be both caring and assertive to raise a good dog and Fluttershy lacked the assertive part with her Angel Bunny which is completely and 100% realistic and a valid part of her character to criticize. Her job is to deal with animals but she lacked one nessecary skill for it and so it backfired. If old Fluttershy were to raise a dog it could easily become a whiny yelping bitch, if new Fluttershy were to raise a dog, god beware that happens, it would become a spiteful biter. New new Fluttershy will raise a nice mannered happy dog.

And her behavior was not over the top. If people who were bullied suddenly get authority (like in the military or in an office) or like in Fluttershy's case due to some event that pushes them towards stopping getting bullied by any means without caring for the consequences they often start to behave like crap. For example many bullies were bullied themselves or have abusive parents. When you get pushed around you build up spite and hate and that is another valid concern about the Fluttershy character.
Fluttershy's character itself did not change an inch, though, and that is the important part. Her heart was still there. She was good and always will be (except for various magical spells). She recognized by herself that the way she was acting was intolerable and hated herself for it. She didn't want to behave like that but she also did not want to go back to being a doormat and she thought it was exclusively one or the other. So she barricaded herself and didn't want to meet any other people at all because if she interacts with other people it would, in her mind, mean being one extreme or the other. Bully or doormat. And that is where her friends came in and saved her by giving her the push she needed by telling her to find the middle way. And that relates back to the title of the series: Friendship is Magic.

It was an awesome episode. Good story, realistic characters, good gags. It is in the list of my favorty episodes.

I'm kinda irritated why a minotaur (= cow) would have goat assistants that make goat sounds.

What I feel this episode really needed was some sort of montage showing Fluttershy getting more training from Iron Will in the middle, after Fluttershy goes to his seminar and before she becomes new Fluttershy. People really don't change that rapidly, and later Iron Will kind of implies that he gave her lessons later when he says taking a long time to pay him. I think if there were just a 30 second or so bit in between that showed Fluttershy practicing her "assertiveness" in a couple of different ways, it would've made the whole episode flow a bit better. Other that that, the episode was pretty good. Watching Fluttershy be a jerk made me sad, though.
