For me, I'd have to go with either the Batman: The Animated Series references in "Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" or the oh-so-subtle Hitchhiker's Guide reference in "Fall Weather Friends."
Addendum: I just rewatched the first part of the pilot, and... Luna's banishment was PERMANENT, guys. Not a thousand years; she only escaped because the stars helped her. If not for them...
Celestia may be evil after all.
She didnt have no choice defeated or not she would still cause problems she knew that abnishment wont last forever and i think she saw a chance if twi learned about friendship and defeated her she might be turned back to old her ...atleast thouse are my thoughs
I love how even the freakin' deities of the land don't seem to understand the Elements of Harmony. I sense backstory!
Who could have created such powerful artifacts? How did Celestia get her hooves on them? Does that mean she possesses the necessary 5 traits (Laughter would explain her trolling)? If so, can anypony with the 5 traits and natural-born magic wield the Elements? Or is it like Callandor, where the Elements can be wielded by a single entity but the effect is weakened/less controllable? If Celestia and Luna are just Princesses, then what are the King/Queen like (assuming there is a King/Queen)? What was Discord's relationship to the world before his imprisonment in stone? Did he just make chaos, or was he there to balance out Harmony? Did he grow too powerful, hence why Celestia and Luna had to take him down?
This show leaves entirely too much unanswered; there's so, so very much potential for epicness. And you know what? I actually wouldn't put it past the writers to include a lot of those answers.
I also have to wonder, when the show does inevitably end, if it will be different from Faust's original vision (she mentioned each pony having a specific destiny they would fulfill), and if it is, will Faust ever tell us what her plan was? I have a feeling it'd be no, but it'd drive me crazy.
Edit: on the subject of Luna's banishment, that was pretty fucking epic timing on Celestia's part: getting the requisite representatives of the six elements together, in one place, literally hours before they would be called upon to SAVE THE WORLD!? Makes you wonder if there wasn't some scheming on Celestia's part to get Pinkie, Dash, Fluttershy and Rarity to leave their original homes and take up residence in Ponyville.

My understanding from the narration at the start of the series was that Luna and Celestia controlled all 6, and then Celestia used the ones she controlled to banish Nightmare Moon(since with all 6, she could conceivably do what the mane 6 would do a millennium later).
I remember that L. Faust supposedly wanted to create a more adventure type series.
Going on a limb I imagine that the backstory of 1000 years ago was a lord of the rings style epic, with Discord having the part of Sauron(or being just a minor villain with someone we don´t know about being the truly evil), Luna being, like Gollum, corrupted by dark powers and other things in epic proportions. We also have many different people and each of those possibly having nations(earth ponies, unicorns, pegasi, zebras, alicorns, griffons, dragons, diamond dogs) Just that the target audience is little kids and up till her departure there hasn´t been a place to fit such backstory in, with the episodes often being too short for their main plot and all. We basically now nothing about what equestria(or any other land) was like 1000 years ago. (This is entirely speculation btw)
I am pretty sure if anyone at all had something in mind for the backstory, it´s Lauren Faust. It may still happen, somewhere down the line.
On a kind of related side note, I picked something up, that Hasbro/Hub is considering making a spinoff series of MLP targeted at male kids(most likely something like Daring-Do) Does anyone have more information on that?

I believe this was just a hypothetical discussion held on Equestria Daily nothing actually official.

Just EqD being irresponsible with the wording. They have to realise they aren't a personal blog any more.
15. The season began with a two-part introduction to Equestria, unfolding the tale of Twilight Sparkle's journey to Ponyville and her triumph over Nightmare Moon with the help of her newfound friends and the virtues represented in the Elements of Harmony. Afterward, the season continued to hold a certain level of continuity but meandered from story to story as a episodic romp. Why'd the approach change, and how did this impact production and creative input? What do you believe emerged as the strongest component of the new direction; alternately, what do you believe you could have accomplished had the show stayed on its first course?
This is a good opportunity to clear up a bit of a rumor. Something I said on my dA page turned into an interesting Internet game of telephone; consequently, a lot of fans now seem to think that I had a grand scheme for a big, dramatic, serialized magical-girl style of a show. Actually, it was always my intention to have the show partially “adventure stories” and partially “relationship stories,” as I called them in my initial pitch bible. I had thought that maybe a third of the episodes could be more like Dragonshy, or the end of Feeling Pinkie Keen, or even have this creepy thread through them like Stare Master. But, ultimately, fewer than a quarter of the episodes had this adventure aspect to it. There were several reasons why. For example, restrictions on what was considered too scary for our younger demographic put limitations of the types of stories we could tell. The accelerated schedule also made it difficult - plot heavy episodes take too long to plan, and too many new characters and locations were a heavy burden to the crew at such a fast pace. If we had tried to do more, they would have fallen short; and since we had a cast and crew that was so well versed at comedy, it just seemed like the right decision to de-emphasize that style.
I don’t think the consequences of this minor change in direction were really felt in Season 1 except for the quantity of the types of stories. The tone or humor would not have been different, and the expectation that we could start going in that direction in later seasons gave me hope that I could still fulfill some of the characters' grander destinies; but, truly, I always wanted this show to be an ensemble-cast comedy first and foremost.
If we had penned more adventure stories, the only difference I can think of is that perhaps you would have seen more of Luna and Zecora. Zecora was designed to be a sage and mentor to whom the ponies could go for information about their quests. She was designed to be a second mentor to Twilight, but that didn’t come to pass. And Luna, though good, was meant to be associated with darkness and night - and these are considered (by some) to be iffy themes for a show for young girls - so she had to slide to the wayside.

So apparently they did edit the last roundup to exclude anything related to derpy. really not happy about that and I won't accept it as cannon for me at least.
thats the version thats thats on itunes now and will probably be what hasbro will show for the episode.
Meh, not a derpy reference fan - what is from the community stays in the community - but I'd rather have them remove the retardedness from the voice. Also it sounds a lot worse.
I'm kinda in that boat too, it's cool and all but I'd prefer if they just kept it as that sort of random pony in the background you never notice unless you're looking for it, so the voice change doesn't bother me at all.
I'm fine with the voice change, the community didn't make the voice. I'm just annoyed that they took out the Derpy reference. This is fucking ridiculous. I'm actually kind of offended. maybe I'll find a bunch of Muslim friends whoa re offended by the name of the Cutie Mark Crusaders and have them change it. Cutting things pre-production is one thing...but this is just silly.
I don't like the new Derpy voice. It just doesn't sound right.
I wasn't particularly fond of old Derpy's voice, but it had a charm, cuteness and uniqueness to it; the new Derpy's voice sounds horribly generic. She's lost that part of her personality, and I weep for it.
I think people are taking it a little to seriously. The guys at Studio B were awesome enough to do a shout out and Hasbro said no, no big deal.
What we still have is Derpy, who exists because of the fans, taking a prominent roll in the episode still. I don't like the new voice either, but the only part of the original voice I liked was when she was looking through the roof to see if Rainbow Dash was ok.
If this was the way the episode originally aired I don't think there would have been a problem. Just be happy we still got a huge shoutout that wasn't entirely cut from the show.
