The face is perfect, the mane amazing, the proportions accurate. It looks really good, and she is right to be proud of it. At first, I was just curious. Others liked it, and I´m taking about the internet here. After finding pictures and references every now and then I searched a little. Then I found it originated on freaking 4Chan. 4chan liking a "little girls show" in an unironic way doesn´t just happen. It´s like finding out gravity doesn´t exist. 4Chan is supposed to be an evil cesspool of the worst humanity can come up with, paired with dark humor and funny pictures, but most of all very evil and corrupt. After that, I was really curious. The show itself begins rather slow but quickly gets better. Due to the 2 pilot episodes being really abrupt followed by rather weak Ticket Master. Anyway the 6 main have distinct characters with quite some depth and background to them. A whole lot more than you would expect from my little pony if you watched the other ones. Most of all, the animation is really awesome. It´s a lot of little things, and I couldn´t put my finger on those until they were pointed out. There are a lot of different angles, movements and facial expressions which all look very fluid as opposed to static robot-esque movements. The voice actors are really great and add to the characters. The original english cast is just very, very good. As are the songs. There are references strewn in here and there. Not to some mindless pop culture but to more memorable stuff like The Lion King, Looney Tunes, Music Man(didn´t even know that movie existed). There is no talking down to the audience during moral lessons. Really fricking good pacing. Many shows look like they try to stall time while MLP looks cut short more often than not. I have become really impatient and a show that feels like its stuffed with so many good ideas that they can´t fit it all in is just so rare nowadays. What I especially like is that there is almost never "a border" to the uninteresting part, where you are not supposed to look, that some other cartoons have. You know, the generic background that looks like shit, has less color and looks like absolutely no effort went into it. I somehow think of Sponge Bob writing this. The horizon is just a really bleak backdrop in Sponge Bob. Actually the entire background kind of looks like stock photos to me. Overall it´s just a really, damn good show that "just happens to be" from the My Little Pony franchise. Another factor in fandom health is character applicability. Think of all the stuff both big and small, both mundane and way-out-there that we've adapted our characters into. Few casts could comfortably stretch like that. Too specialized designs (say, toasters…) are restrictive to work with, while too generic forms (e.g., humans) just won't carry as much identity. The familiarity with the horse and related mythology exists, yes. I just don´t think that is a really strong point, as many other things have connotations, too. Like, we could agree a fridge is huge, probably slow and strong, or from another context dogs have various kinds of breeds. Heck, even cars and vehicles, see transformers. People have different assumptions about a sports car than they have about a SUV. Pony races(Uni, Peg, Earth) with Alicorns at top is a topic I don´t really have an opinion on, to be honest. It´s not bad, I´m just not sure how good it is. You second point is pretty good though. Ponies are a very adaptable design. Color scheme, hair-do and cutie mark can change a character very much without changing the basic body. That really helps making new and visibly distinct characters without having to start scratch with the animation. PC ponies are easy to do, too, though the notion that fanfics contribute to success is....at least not relevant to me. In my opinion, the expressive faces is something extraordinary. Arguably a lesson taken from Anime & Manga, Eyes are just freaking important in conveying feeling. I find it fascinating that we as western people can apply that so directly. I´m just imagining transformers with huge eyed cartoon faces right now. Addendum: I just rewatched the first part of the pilot, and... Luna's banishment was PERMANENT, guys. Not a thousand years; she only escaped because the stars helped her. If not for them... If Celestia didn't banish her, she would've brought eternal night which would probably kill everything in Equestria(if not the planet, depending on how she would've done it). The Elements have been, to our knowledge, used a grand total of four times. I don't think anypony understands them, let alone can properly control them. My headcanon about the entire thing is that Celestia just used the Elements with the intent to keep Equestria safe, and she was so devastated by sending her sister away that she unbound the Elements from herself and left them in the place the mane 6 would later discover them, as to prevent doing that to another.
