Personality isn't really that similar, Aku was just angry and wanted Jack dead, Discord is very playful.
Yeah, Aku's caracter was more "evil" than playful, but his over-the-top aspect was quite often played for comic relief. Well, ok it's been more than 5 years since I watched so I may not remember correctly.

For me Discord reminds me of Hannibal Roy Bean from Xiaolin Showdown when it comes to bringing chaos in.
Thank you for pointing me to this show guys, my kiddies love em allthough i am a bit worried that they are going to start barfing rainbows, its better then most of the crap on tv.

Haha, don't want a sonic rainboom at an inappropriate time!
I shared the show with my little sister and she never shuts up about the ponies these days. I'm so proud :p

Yeah, having a child around really helps with getting into the show. When I first started watching it, I saw the 1&2 two-parter, then stopped with the 3rd episode. Then my gfs 3yo niece came to visit... Let's just say the season 2 opener was a big wait for me
Rarity is self employed selling dresses. Applejack is an apple farmer. Rainbow Dash has a day job moving clouds. What do Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie do? Fluttershy might not need a job because she could probably get her animals to scavenge food for her, but what does Pinkie Pie do? edit: forgot to mention Twilight's an apprentice
Fluttershy takes care of the animals around Ponyville for the residents, deals with tasks like the bunny census and general well being of them, Pinkie Pies a party hostess (for example she hosts Diamond Tiaras cutesenyera)
she seems to live above and have access to the ovens at sugercube corner so I guess she makes cakes and stuff in preperation for parties aswell.
I watched the new episode again and everything seems to hint that Celestia and Luna turned the other ponies wielding the Elements of Harmony to stone (and they can be seen in the garden, I felt like the camera lingers a little too long in that one position when the 4 distinct pony statues are visible).
This would explain why they're "no longer connected to the elements" as Celestia says, and while Discord's jabs at the princess ("I don't turn ponies into stone") don't necessarily mean she turns PONIES into stone, it does fall into the whole thing pretty nicely. Admittedly the whole idea is fueled by the fanon that Celestia is nothing but a tyrant, and honestly is probably a wee bit complicated a plot for this sort of show but hey it's a fun thought to hang on to until next Saturday.
Oh and I'm sure someone thought of this already before me but oh well...

Pinkie Pie more or less works in the family bakery, while Twilight probably has a schorlarship. Fluttershy is actually a mystery, though. How does she get money? Maybe her family is rich or something?
This point aside, it's ironic that the professions imply the caracters are age-wise young adults. They all have jobs (Rarity, Applejack, Rainbow Dash), apprenticeships (in a way Pinkie Pie) or are higher learning students (Twilight). Though that again leaves Fluttershy out.
Twilight is a librarian and Celestia's official at Ponyville. Rarity is a Designer as well as the owner of the Boutique. Rainbow Dash is the captain of the weather control(at least Ponyville's division, if that exists). Fluttershy is a veterinarian, animal caretaker, AND a biologist(dealing with animal census and such). Pinkie Pie is a party hostess and does part-time jobs at Sugar Cube Corner. Applejack is a farmer(duh).
Well, anyone else notice a pattern here?
Unicorns: Intellectual/Royal/Noble related Pegasi: Nature related Earth Ponies: "low-category" type of jobs(Working in a candy shop? Farmer?)
I don't know if this was intended or not, but there clearly is a kind of hierarchy around ponies.
Also, I wonder what happened to Sea Ponies and Flutterponies(aka. Fairy Ponies) that existed in G1. Maybe there is a plot planned for them on G4? :D
That's interesting, but I'd stick with the idea that these old bearers of the elements just died out of age and these statues were put there to both mask Discord's statue and to remember those who defeated Discord for the first time.
That, or something went terribly wrong.
Also, the one that represents "Courage" makes me wonder if the elements had changed their forms and attributes over time, or if that was the original bearer of the Element of Magic.
<edit> @up IIRC, Lauren intended to make the chacters young adults(17~21 age range) so that they wouldn't have to worry about things like school.
I don't think its too hard to imagine that Ponyville would pay Fluttershy for tending to the animals in and around Ponyville, just think of it as a kinda caretaker, for example Rarity takes Opalescence to Fluttershy to be groomed and looked after, maybe she does that for the other ponies in town aswell as for the wild animals.
Pinkie pie gets wage and lodging from Mr and Mrs cake I guess :p
I don't really agree with the heiracrchy thing, I really doubt that would be intentional at least
Take Applejacks relatives in Manehatten for example, (The oranges) they look pretty well to do / rich to me
I'm sad that I discovered this blog after the writer said he'd be unable to keep regularly updating. The content that he creates though is probably my favorite out of any character blog I've seen. The one you posted is exceptionally dawwwww worthy.

Yeah more than likely this is true. But until I'm proven otherwise I think I'll choose to believe Celestia, Luna and the other original bearers of the Elements started out as normal ponies, but after defeating Discord found out that by controlling all the Elements they could turn themselves into immortal demigod alicorns, and after decades of civil war, Luna and Celestia came out the victors.
And now the Mane6 are destined to repeat history.
Yeah I'll stop before this becomes a full-blown fic.
I loved the episode, but you really have to wonder about their intended audience by now. Discord is almost an exact copy of Q from The Next Generation, there are references to Chocolate Rain and the plot is pretty tricky to understand because it's not made explicit that Discord's goals are different than the typical (as seen in the pilot) "try to turn ponies against each other" as Discord is just controlling them outright.
For the record, This episode was originally written and produced before the show even aired.
Source? I know it was produced during S1, I'm not sure it was written before E1S1, which is what your post seems to imply.
The Eq D interviews imply that all of the season 1 episodes were worked on at the same time. I've heard that the original plan was to have this be the end of season one, but forget where I heard that.
Fair enough, take a free discord for your troubles

Aspect wise, yes, he even has a similar aura, personality wise? Not quite so much. Then again its been a long time since I saw Samurai Jack.
Such an awesome picture.
I think this episode is definitely the best episode so far for introducing new people to the show. It was just so much fun
Yeah, way back when I saw episodes 7 and 1-2, I thought honesty made sense for AJ, but I didn't know her as well back then. I agree it feels forced; she's lied before, even to herself, sometimes out of pride or sometimes out of consideration for other's feelings. I'll suggest it again: maybe RD should've had honesty (look how bad she is at detecting lies! ;p) and AJ loyalty, because loyalty can be tied with duty I think, and she's definitely dutiful to her friends, family, and even career (go apples!)
