If you want to have a reference point for Korean dramas, watch Winter Sonata. It should be a must-watch for all K-Drama fans, though it should be left until a few recent ones have been digested.
It's old, but it marks the beginning of Hallyu. Since the release and success of this drama, Korean producers have been producing dramas for export, which has led to the recent influx of idols into the acting scene. There is a marked difference in production attitudes before and after Winter Sonata, with broadcasters deeming high-budget dramas to be unsuccessful if no foreign broadcast licenses are purchased.
It also one of the last great hurrahs of Korean melodrama, even managing to combine traditional family values clashing with more modern elements coming in from the West. Nowadays, the most popular are romcoms and those that have a happy ending but if you enjoy the bittersweet or more solemn endings that are still preserved in dramatic Korean movies, you will appreciate this producer's works.
Autumn Story is its "prequel" of sorts. It is superior and inferior to its sequel in different ways and is definitely worth a look.
Also adding that generally, dramas are watched by females. Especially the ones that involve love triangles. This has changed somewhat with the appearance of idols on the acting scene, which obviously appeals to guys. Korean men are actually known to watch more period dramas, like Jumong, Queen Seondeok, Iljimae, Great King Sejong and the like.
i find sometimes the level of mean-ness in korean drama is just hard to take and have to take long lengthy breaks from watching them lol, has anyone else had this problem? also the endings always lack closure, so i sometimes just stop watching the drama an episode before it finishes, just so i can imagine an ending that pleases me... haha

Mean-ness as in main character 1 being mean to female character 2 for reasons like "my mom doesn't approve of you", "it's too dangerous for us to be together" or as in the very very frequent lying to the other person in order "not to hurt him/her"? Especially the last one happens in so many of those dramas and every time I start ripping out my hair. It's so obvious that it's less hurtful to just stay together than break up for some lame reason. I don't know if this lack of empathy is intentional, cultural or just results from a bad script, but if that was what you meant, I'm with you.
Do these k-drama's air weekly or biweekly? These cliffhangers at the end of each episode is sometimes too much for me and I have to watch the next one lol
I think most if not all of them are biweekly, even the hour-long ones. iris: Wednesday & Thursday 21:55 city hunter: Wednesday & Thursday 21:55 ms ripley: Mondays & Tuesdays 21:55 midas: Monday & Tuesday 21:55 etc.
an exception was killer k, which aired only on Saturdays.
Coffee Prince and MGIAG also aired twice a week, normally on two consecutive days.
edit: A new drama, called Man of Honor, is airing. Episode 1 is up, no subs yet (withs2 lists it under "possible future projects"). I couldn't completely grasp the plot but who cares, PMY is in it.
Can someone point me toward 1080i (or 720p) of Deep Rooted Tree and Man of Honor? And a place to get subs (though I think DSSubs is the place for this)?

im kinda excited for a this new drama "a thousand days promise". was waiting for a good sad drama. waiting for first episode to be sub to see how it is
Anyway, now I know that Greatest Love is an OK drama with some (inadvertently) hilarious scenes. The main girl unfortunately isn't too interesting in any way (humor, charme, looks) which makes it worse because, to be honest, that's what makes or breaks most dramas - the quality of the lead actors.

i actually think the casting directors did an excellent job with choosing the leads. her looks and image fit with the storyline and makes it more believable than if you picked someone like shin min ah for the role. hong sisters are fucking gosu at romantic comedies.
High Kick 3 is fcking amazing namely due to Krystal and my new actress waifu Kim Ji won, its bubbly fun with slight romanticism sometimes or odd situations, well its a sitcom anyway. Here is a compliation of pwing pwing
Just finished 49 days and damn, it was pretty good. Most of the kdramas I've seen have always started off really well, then either have a really predictable ending or an ending with alot of unanswered questions. But this one left me pretty satisfied. Nothing too corny and nothing too sad.
hahah omg i seen that movie. such an ironic ending.
anyways i usually dont like historical dramas just because its always so depressing with the killings and all but tree with deep roots is pretty good. hoping there would be some romance in there though. the two main characters dont know each other yet but has a great story so far.
