Yes, it does.

its not supposed to be informative, but people who actually understand them will go "oh... i get it"
and i doubt you have watched the first two seasons. i agree that after season 2, TBBT started to dumb down their nerd references, perhaps to make it more understandable for americans

This show doesn't even try to make references that only the actual nerds will get? Yes, it does. I would have to give recognition to both posters, as I feel they are both partially right in their own way. My feeling is that this show is not as nerdy as people think however some highly nerdy reference exist, but they are extremely rare. It all boils down on definition of a nerd which I feel is almost impossible to create for a general purpose. For some people nerd is someone who reads comics, while for guy who has little to no knowledge, about comics and read only one series he likes or has a general knowledge about the topic, nerd is someone who collects them, know every story in every book, can quote characters etc etc. I myself don't think I am a nerd, although I've heard this from one or two people, but it was fine with me (I couldn't find a better wording, I don't think nerd is an insult ). As far as the show goes, I love it and it almost never disappoints me. It is certainly most nerdy show on the network television, but it's not full out nerdy. That's reserved for low budget cable sci-fi shows, or straight to DVD movies.

I really hate this show. Never before have I seen a less accurate and more annoying depiction of nerd culture, complete with totally overused laugh tracks. If you ask me, it seems more like a show about nerds for people who aren't nerds. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm more of a videogames/anime type nerd than a science nerd, but the humor totally escapes me. Not in an "I don't follow the premise of the joke" way but in a "I don't understand WHY this is supposed to be funny" way.
Sheldon: I am doing something nerdy. *HAHAHHAHA* Sheldon: Oddball followup comment. *HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*
I'm not trying to troll or derail (also I know I'm not the first to criticize) but the OP did say he was interested in seeing other people's opinions. I absolutely can't stand the show and don't see how anyone thinks it deserves the audience it's been getting, let alone the awards.
edit: also I do agree that the show doesn't exactly help with negative nerd stereotypes. Showing two nerdy dudes watching anime/playing videogames with a fairly normal girl getting all weirded out about it doesn't exactly help to place gamers/geeks/nerds/whatever at a higher cultural standpoint. But I guess the jokes are just a product of what the audience thinks is funny.

you should know that humor generally achieves funniness by exaggerating a stereotype or reaction towards a certain stereotype. right?
personally i think the show is hilarious; not necessarily because of any "nerd" component, but rather because I've never seen anyone real or or fictitious who has the utter lack of social cues as Sheldon does, and his definite lack leads to many authentically funny situations.

Yeah, was a bit more advanced references in the start... Not all that hard to follow though, but since most never took any interest at all in science class I suppose they had to dumb it down to not upset the part of the audience who are ignorant.
I don't want to single out Americans as the reason for the change though, while it may hold some truth with all those religious nuts :p

First off, this is my FAVORITE show! Been watching since the beginning and it was cool seeing how the relationships developed and how, now, the show follows the characters more and more in their dating lives and awkwardness in those situations.
I am a bit disappointed (as many posters also expressed) that the show seems to have abandoned a lot of the "nerdy", "geeky" side humor in favor of more relationship/situational humor. I can attribute this to the network trying to expand their target audience to what more of the "average" person can identify with, and I guess it's working. While I still anxiously await the new episodes (tonight!!), I would love to see them bring back more of the old humor about random physics theories.
Awesome show though, I have gotten quite a few people addicted to it :3

Separate thought: Does anyone else feel like, at the beginning of the series, we (the audience) were mainly laughing with these nerdy guys and their awkwardness with social life like we are in on the joke, but in recent episodes, the way it is written and laugh-tracks, we (the audience) are sorta laughing at these characters, i.e. "wow these guys are really nerdy"
Idk if that makes sense but it was a random thought I had while watching one day and was wondering if anyone else noticed any kind of slight, subtle shift. Thoughts?

I gotta agree with this. It's really just your standard mindless sitcom where the punchline to every joke is a random three-word phrase from a science textbook.
I'm sure I take personal offense since I hold nerd and geek culture in high regard, but everything init I see is trying to rally the audience to 'don't feel bad, nerds are stupid too'.

Penny is so freakin hot, jus sayin

Being a sarcastic person, i love the personalities of the characters

It used to be a show about being nerdy, smart. Now it's just a show about social awkwardness. Season 4, I am dissapoint

This and how I met your mother are 2 of my favorite shows by far. Season 4 has been great so far but Leonard and penny just need to get back together.

Watching this show is weird now having seen Jonny Galecki on Entourage.

True that lol!
Amy is becoming really funny IMO. And i'm still kinda surprised that after 5 seasons, I'm still laughing every episode, and doesn't even matter if i've seen it 10 times already.
Great episode again, fucking love the show.

Well, the scientific jokes are quite good i think, its not just phrases from textbooks. (e.g Sheldon using Schroedingers Cat as a methapora of Penny's relationship with Lennard)
I also dont think that the show trivializes nerd culture or something like that, i think its exactly the opposite. Over the seasons Penny switches from an outsider to a member of the group, sometimes she even refers to nerd/science stuff and is seriously interested in it. If there's one typ of person the show makes fun of then its the muscular, stupid one. Often shown as one of Penny's ex- boyfriends or one-night stands. (The guy that thought the laser could destroy the moon was pretty hilarious)

You know, I think that determining whether or not a person will like Big Bang theory can be measured along a fucking uncanny valley.
The closer a person is towards being like the people portrayed on the show, the more they will like it, until a certain uncanniness is hit between a real person and a character on the show and a character on that show, and they just start to hate it.
example
this show is terrible, its unfunny and dwells in veiled narcissism. Please stop liking things just because they are "nerdy" its pathetic
SHELDON IS THAT YOU?
---- Also, fun fact. Did you guys know that Big Bang Theory is currently the most popular American TV show in the country of China?
|
One of my favorite shows, love it when I catch a nerdy reference which is unusual for any tv show
|
I haven't been able to watch this show ever since my friend linked me to a youtube of an episode I had thought was funny... without the laugh track. Pretty much ruined the experience for me.
Also, they used to have actual theoretical physics jokes in the first couple seasons, haven't watched since then.
|
Ive given this show many chances, and I dont think its terrible or anything, I just expected a show about nerds to have more clever humour. Sure the characters are intellegent but the jokes are all standard sitcom-laughtrack crap.
But hey, as far as changing public perceptions go I think it is great. 20 years ago it would be pretty rare to see a girl whos looking for a "nerdy guy". Nowadays? Its pretty common, thanks in part to shows like this. So hey, anything thats gunna get me more action in the long run is pretty cool by me :D
