I like J-pop and J-rock the same, however, I picked J-rock since it is more specific. J-pop is such a broad term. I do like enjoy a lot of Ayu's songs but they are more rocky than anything. Also, most J-pop songs sound like they would be classified as rock outside of Japan.
Voted for J-Rock, I mean I don't mind J-pop, a lot of songs I have can be classified as J-pop even though they may have guitars in them (J-poprock? lol). But I prefer rock to pop. Even when I first got into Japanese music it was J-rock. My first Japanese song was from Luna Sea (I for you). But that doesn't mean I don't like J-pop.
Does Straight up Rock include Visual kei? I hate that stuff :V But Japan has plenty of great post-hardcore and post-rock bands, separate from the usual J-Rock fare (like AKFG, Dragon Ash, etc). Particularly Mono, Toe, and 凛として時雨. I've seen at least one other person post Toe songs already and that makes me happy Aww yeah:
And don't forget the great underground electronic scene (J-Core, as some would call it). I guess it would be lumped into the Indie category since most of the artists sell at events like Comiket/M3 and not commercially. Doujin music might be a better term to separate these guys since they cover so many EDM genres. But no one around here listens to it anyways :3 Some random tracks from SKETCH UP! Recordings' most recent album:
Voted Other, since I don't really know where to group all this stuff. Yeah, I never post in this thread since all I see posted is J-pop, and those J-pop posters ignoring the odd one out posting some post-rock or something. But I'm not really hating on J-pop or anything, since I listen to it on occasion too :3 I just listen to more EDM made by Japanese producers, and some Japanese post-rock bands.
And some obligatory J-pop to finish my post:
DAT AUTOTUNE (is quite lovely, actually). Capsule is like the master of autotune
I can't believe Perfume are only 88's and 89's... they can pass for at least 91 or 92 anytime. To be honest I think they can do kinda well in Korea if they ever went there...
Fushizen na Girl live
natural ni koishite live
btw I picked R&B / Hip-Hop. I guess it helps that mainstream singers like Utada and Namie were doing it well, but even the little known people like Emi Hinouchi and EMYLI end up singing good songs as well (plus they're really talented).
lol i remember seeing this somewhere. prolly form my sister lol for some reason jap and english lesson type vids are lol. i remember one musume showed me that was sooooooooooooooooo wtf. gonna c if i can find it
edit: btw a random namie amuro song i really enjoyed when i first started dabbling in jpop/music not sure y i love it so much, but namie so good
I forgot which album ... but one of the te' albums is very much listenable through the whole album ... which seems less common nowadays with only a few post-rock tracks in an album being worth listening more than once.

I love this band. Their album "Just A Moment" is one of my favorite rock albums from the last few years. I have them in my library as "Rin Toshite Shigure" though.
Fans of the anime Samurai Champloo will probably be familiar with the following artist... Nujabes was a hip hop and "nu-jazz" producer who contributed a lot to the soundtrack for that show. As a producer and an avid lover of jazz, his style and his ability to create amazingly soulful beats made him my absolute favorite producer. Unfortunately, he was killed in a car crash a few months ago.
(I'm sure others have posted Nujabes tracks in this thread - I just don't feel like searching through 15 pages!)
And one of the artists that Nujabes worked with... Uyama Hiroto. Another producer, but he is also a multi-instrumentalist, playing all sorts of horns and winds on his tracks. This is one of my favorites, since he takes a few samples from Pat Metheny's discography.
