Japanese Music Discussion? More like Japanese Pop Music Discussion.

Here are some really interesting japanese experimental electronica / post-rock / beats

youtube quality doesn't do justice to most of these, unfortunately.

This is actually the song that got me into Asian music as a whole. The piano intro is still my ringtone after so, so many years.

Kubota Toshinobu's song (#2 on chart) is awesome and if you don't like it at first glance it'd def grow on you. I wish it were #1, but I guess it's hard to beat out TOKIO (even if that song doesn't seem too great).

Some NON-pop stuff:

Japanese math rock, mudy on the sakuban

Oh Kubota!! Didn't ring a bell until I realize that I think he was the one that did a collab with SunMin for "Keep Holding You" or whatever. That song is real good.

From what I read, Bonnie Pink's gonna do a tour in Japan. As for her...

ah nice. not really a huge kat-tun fan but ill check it out since its a foreign act
so finished "sunao ni narankute". hero's acting alright, but the lead chick, ueno juri, is pretty nice and seems really well known/popular for her drama/movie roles

other than the really fucking good sayuri song, here's another OST i liked from the drama

Holy shit, there's a lot of old music in this thread. Does anyone have anything from Aiko? I was really into her/them when I lived in Japan and just found out that she/they have been putting out albums well into 2008. Also I heard Do As Infinity is back together? And whatever happened to like, HY or Rip Slyme or Dragon Ash?

Utada was about 30x better when she was a pop singer, though:

I love Japanese music. But honestly I can't stand J-pop, although what is J-pop and whats not is not a finely defined line. I like some of the music some people have posted recently. Toe is a great band, mouse on the keys as well. Japan has pretty much all genres of music. It's interesting how some genres are even adapted from their American equivalents. I think this is really prevalent in the more experimental noise/punk genre type bands like Melt-Banana, Boredoms, Boris, OOIOO, ミドリ, etc.

If ya haven't heard of such bands give them a listen!

Number Girl is also a pretty influential band of today's Japanese punk music.

54-71 is also an awesome band.
