Maybe the top seed picks the group from which the 4th seed is taken from, though that opens up the problem of one group being picked by multiple top seeds.

Man, this is a weird format. As far as I can tell, where you place in groups means nothing. Finishing high in your group just lets you play against those that finish low (or choose - I cannot say for sure). However, if you want to win the tournament, you'll have to play against the strongest opponents anyway.

Been a lot of critique regarding the format for sure. First picks from 3-4 of the other group as I understand it. Not sure if it is A vs D or if they draw it after groups finish (which is common when you don't get to pick as first team).

Sure, but the best competitors are not really worried about whether they finish eight or ninth - they want to win the tournament. I fear that it would be almost just as viable to finish last in groups and then surprise your opponents with your strategy in playoff. Of course, people don't get the same momentum going, but that's not always the main factor.
