It seems like Phoenix should have some presence on the lane at least. No, against a good enough clock player Phoenix will get mana burned constantly by the cogs and without mana for fire spirits you actually can't do anything to clock as he just walks up with battery assault on and hits you. If you don't get all of your mana burned by level 3 you have a chance, but you need to kill him. You can start boots and leverage your boots advantage. Clock can't start boots in exchange, and the boots advantage means he can't burn you until he also gets boots (by which point you hit level 3 already). except clock did start boots and phoenix didnt that game? Didn't Phoenix get first blood credit? Couldn't he have gotten boots. First Blood and top rune. Then why did he not get boots, lol? Boots parity vs. no stout is playable because even without mana you're playing ranged vs. no stout melee. You expect your mana to get burned so you use mana aggressively and abuse his lack of stout before you have no mana and hope to get your first laning item out of it. Boots disadvantage means you just get chased out of lane because of the MS difference. the problem is phoenix spamming out his mana before level 3 doesnt even do much because level 1 fire spirits is poop
and i'm sure rightclick harass can't threaten a kill alone while you're getting bumped by cogs all the time

How about you just admit for once that the Chinese teams are simply better at teamplay, and that's what matters at the highest level. Only EG really has shown teamwork/5 man discipline that is on par with the Chinese teams. It's easy to look good when you dominate and never face adversity, but LGD/Vici/EHOME (who happen to be captained by VERY good captains) all are playing extremely disciplined DotA even when behind. You can see this in how they play, even when they are behind they never abandon their gameplan like c9, secret, Empire, and other Western teams have. It's like they lose a few fights and just totally abandon their gameplan.

Sloppy seconds EG doesn't pick up (for their potential 2nd team)

And just my 2 cents but FATA is honestly just average.
If they bone instead of Aui they would still be tittle contenteder imo. FATA is not a star but he can do his job, i still think Sing2 is a better player

Also Phoenix had boots at level 1, just looked it up. As clock you just run up and hit him and he has to back off.
Clock has a lot of hp and a good amount of armor. He can zone with cogs effectively and if Phoenix gets caught you have a 50/50 chance of actually escaping thanks to battery. It's not a good matchup for Phoenix at all.

He is an actual anime character, he'd rather die than give up his dream to win TI

Well, C9's going full midgame, I wonder how it'll work out for them

Because that's not how they're winning.
Team - Empire has it. They still lost to MVP out playing them. Secret has it. They still lost to bad pick.
