I think it's more about serving/contributing to your country than military training. It's basic training and doing something. the only problem I have is with it being mandatory, I don't think lowly of the military or anything of the sort.

That said, yeah, not everyone's sent to the front lines. IIRC, they evaluate your physical condition and assign you to tasks accordingly. Sometimes it's just regular public service jobs.
