Also if this happens I'd like to see if the chinese teams can strike back at TI5.
Don't worry, teams just have to get into top 8, then its an even playing field again.
At TI4, Chinese teams got smashed by Fnatic, Liquid and Mouz on the first day too.
Essentially, everyone is still grasping at the clash of styles. The few teams that adapt their strategy to form the new meta are the ones that often take the big drawn out tournaments.

So what are the good games from today? I caught a few at the start and a few at the end. Anything I missed?

I I think there's still a lot of time, 4-5 days to go, and when the round robin is set we can see how this will develops.
So far getting top8 is important, I can see Newbee or any other big team falinig to do so atm gettitng there, 9-12 is tricky but might get some good teams in it, and last the 13-16 is gonna be really close and fought out in my opinion.
|
13-16 is 4 teams based on today i'd bet its hgt, tongfu, na'vi and MVP.P
but I could be wrong obviously. In fact i almost certainly will get at least 1 wrong

Yeah this LGD looks like their post TI4 form where Yao drafted terribly but at least know they get faith drafting and Yao playing awful which hasn't been fixed

Bo1s is a great argument for why C9 is doing well, because they're basically running new meta strats every match. But EG and Secret genuinely look reinvigorated and higher skilled than before, while the skill level of the Chinese teams hasn't changed from last we saw them, except for Newbee who are playing worse. I imagine the top Chinese teams won't have an issue getting through the groups - with the exception of Newbee in case they keep this level up - but I do not favor them in a Bo3 vs. EG and Secret.
IMO, VG's success overseas was a misleading mirage for both Chinese teams and fans. It gave off the impression that China was super ahead and win every int. tournament they attend. Turns out, however, that it was just VG. Had the other top Chinese teams made it to just one of these tournaments, we'd have had a wake up call. But they didn't. Ukraine too dangerous. Visa issues. Blah blah blah. And in the end, both they and the fans paid for it pretending they were going to be just as successful as VG.
I'm going to give it one additional day but I don't think this is a TI 4 situation at all. During TI 4, you had EG & a few NA dark horses jump up the first day, while the EU big shots all crumbled instantly. But those NA dark horses were obvious dark horses, comprised of, effectively, players who've sat between 'mediocre' and 'decent' for years. That they faltered the 2nd and 3rd days was, in a way, just them returning to their normal level prior to TI.
This time, however, you have Secret's all-stars roster and EG with two new players but otherwise the old line up that got 3rd at TI 4. Everyone knew coming in these teams had the raw talent to go all the way to the top. They just didn't think they've already gotten the synergy down. People thought there were going to be communication issues, role issues, conflicting shot calls, poorly coordinated team fights, etc. They didn't think these guys were just going to come in and gel and play as though they've been playing for years.
The situation is thus a lot closer to that of TI 3 than TI 4. The Western favorites are playing to the level of Western favorites. The Western second-tier are playing to the level of Western second-tier. Even a SEA/Korean team - the analogy to Orange @ TI 3 - has risen to the occasion. At the same time, the Chinese teams aren't playing a lot worse than they had been in their own tournaments - it's just that the level they were playing at has been surpassed.
Ask yourself this - do you actually believe teams led by PPD and Puppey are just going to crumble on Day 2 and 3 the way Nar'Vi and Liquid did? I sure don't. The greatest tests are still ahead in the play offs, but I don't think Day 1 is just a fluke.

I just noticed that Team Secret beat BG today with Centaur, Bristle, Troll, Dazzle and Visage
Later on against Team Secret, Navi picks Centaur, Bristle, Lycan, Io and Abaddon
|
And what about that do you think is worth noticing?

Na'vi picked those heroes against BG, not Secret.
