It wasn't very good tbh, it blocked a big part of the screen. That's why I think Dota 2 should have a hud that can be customized in spectator mode. It would give room for that sort of thing and I don't believe the normal in-game hud is the best way to spectate. However I really dislike HoN and LoL's spectator huds because they are so cluttered. SC2 has a customizable spectator hud if I'm not mistaken, and it seems really weird for Valve to stick with the non-customizable and non-scalable hud since the beginning of Dota 2 considering both previous Valve games and Dota 2's competitors have it.
I agree, some customization would be nice, but honestly I hate these overcluttered obs-UI's from HoN/LoL.
I think the Dota genre has huge potential in terms of production value, but it is really difficult to do. As an example player and crowd shots should not be PiP, but cut into the broadcast at the opportune times, but this obviously requires a director that really knows the flow of the game. I think some OGN style super close-ups at the right times would really work in Dota.
Then there is the whole stats side of things, I think the GD studio has done some nice things here, but I think you could even crank it up some more, similar to how US networks produce the NFL. This is perfect to fill some downtime when teams are farming, especially in longer games.
Finally there is instant replay and all the opportunities we have here. I can almost imagine John Madden talking is us through a teamfight on the telestrator. You could even have multiple obs to give different angles and potentially show replays of kills that the main obs might have missed.
The problem is that almost all these things are time-sensitive and require a lot of practice and knowledge for the production crew. If you mess it up you potentially miss critical events during the game. But I think ESL is doing a good job so far, I think you could go really far with a big budget and some practice...

Instant replay in dota is massively overrated. Every time I see it I wish I could just be seeing the game. It breaks the flow and tension of the game.

why is the game delayed now? seems they started with the intro on time?
edit:
Toby Dawson @TobiWanDOTA 2m So there is an issue on the @mousesports side (computers or something) so 30min delay on the start

I disagree, after most teamfights you have some downtime that would work perfectly for instant replay.
In Dota you have so many cluttered teamfights and it is often difficult to see all the big plays during the live broadcast. I am convinced that Instant replay done right (right times, good visual presentation to prevent confusion, good integration into broadcast with explanations what happened) will become a standard for Dota production.

I think picture-in-picture is a much more useful feature, but definatelly harder to do.

Replay during pauses like the Chinese do is the only time I find it acceptable. Otherwise it's showing me shit I've already seen in the place of the real game.
Good watching experience isn't about seeing everything, or being told everything, it's about maintaining tension and excitement for the game and building up to the fights. Looking back 3 minutes to a fight you already saw does nothing to help this.
Then again I can't even stand it when casters (cough GD studio) spend half their time talking about what 'just happened'.

How do people gauge the NaVi vs Fnatic game? Fairly tempted to bet on Fnatic on dotalounge.

No PiP is super easy to do. But it is a sloppy way to show teams/audience. It blocks important screen space and for the majority of the time you see nothing of interest, there might as well be a still foto there. And in the few times that something exciting happens it is too small to really see enough.
There is a good reason why the only place you see PiP in professional productions are the cheesy japanese gameshows were they blend in the face shot of the celebrity guest...

I mean ingame PiP, as in showing diferent places on the map when the action is split up.

Why get 3 people that aren't really casters and only use them for 1 minute transition pieces and not to fill time during breaks.
Not like ESL are the only ones, every org does this, it just seems silly to me. I'm quite sure you can give Pyrion a mic and let him talk to random Polish people for 30 minutes and it would be pretty entertaining.
