Why the fuck are the sensors exposed during combat thou? It's not like the amount of radiation and what not a ship would leave in vacuum can't be detected through some armor. Its space, there is a lot of nothing out there. You need sensors to see and target. Plus both sides are throwing up shit to get fuck with the other sides ability to see them. If your senors are perfectly protected, your blind. You use sensors to detect when the danger is close and hide them reactively. Not like a ship in space can do a u-turn, you don't need to see them 24/7 Well the ships are more like subs in space, they can't see each other and they are really far apart. The combat took place over hundreds of miles. There is nothing in space, so they could shoot really far.
Its not Star trek combat. At one point in the book they are using water change course so the enemy ship can detect their heat signature. Its a lot more "hard science" in tone, so the sensors are 100% necessary and you can't pull them all in.

Well, you are still able to drop a ton of sand from really, really, far away and make sure it arrives at the exact position the other guy is traveling to, at very high speeds. You kinda need very good data about his trajectory and velocity to do that reliably.

So on an unrelated note, what kind of ice cream does LDOOTGD prefer? I have a craving for it right now, but can't decide what kind I want. n_n

Both ships were working to engage the other. The sand was deployed by drones right before the battle.
I haven't read it in years, but all both ships were attempting to engage each other and it took them several days to get into firing range. They had a lot of time to plan, which seemed to be standard when ships decided to fight each other.

The arms race in far future would have taken the ships so far that even thinking about fighting is suicide. I personally greatly dislike the very idea of combat in space, like how would you even meet someone? Any encounters would need to happen in the gravity well of a star to even make the encounter last any time, since at any point one of the sides can fuck off in a random direction without that, and in space magnitudes 3 seconds of headway let's you shake any tail.
And then there's nukes.

Well this is a crazy future where everyone is immortal and they are fighting a race of collective AI's and the cyborg people that live as part of the collective. Its crazy future tech. One is trying to destroy an fledging AI on a planet and the AI ship is trying to protect it. So its near a star.
And I don't think nukes would be that effective. Those ships were really far apart and you would need to get them to the enemy ship without them being shot down. It was all about lasers and amazing amount of mass. As nano bots, so many nano bots.
Its a good read, people should check it out rather than listening to me. Its pretty quick and action packed.
