Hard to say whether it's your resume, tech/soft skills during the interview, shit market in your area, etc. On another note If you absolutely need a job asap and you're applying in a major tech hub, I'd consider looking at some smaller cities at first and then transition back to a tech hub when you have 1-2 years of experience. I'll be honest I kind of lucked out and got a referral to a great company (which pretty much guaranteed at least an interview). Then I got some whiteboard questions that I had already done multiple times in my DS/Algo course lol. edit: (adding some basic tips that could maybe apply to you) Most basic tips without knowing your situation that I can give would be to just continue working on your skills. Build interesting shit, practice your ds/algos if you are targeting companies that whiteboard, have someone look over your resume (honestly ask eieio maybe? he's a senior at a very major company, he most likely does interviews). Reach out to people on Linkedin and related sites. Go to any meetups/career fares, ask people you know for referrals, etc. Finally, keep a hold on your mental health. As someone that has battled similar issues that you have for years, I can say if you aren't in a good place mentally then that's easily your #1 priority atm. Good luck with everything though ![]() Hrm, I guess I'm having trouble with all stages of the process - getting interviews has been tough (though i've had some luck lately!), but yeah, interviews are hard. Haven't had a whiteboard interview in a LONG time, but those have been pretty hit or miss for me. Just standard technical interviews lately, which are pretty rough as I almost always mess up some of the question or don't know stuff. Just seems like there's so much to know, and its hard to focus on any one thing for me (though I'm probably not putting as much time into it). What's a good way people recommend practicing algorithms? Its definitely a weaker point for me, but is there a good book to learn from, or a website people prefer? For whiteboard practice, i've done stuff like hackerrank and leetcode - is this one of those services that its useful to actually spend money on? Yeah, mental health hasn't been great; kind of been in a stressful / mentally taxing relationship and trying to work through it, but that and covid and unemployment (money-wise, i'm fine though) has had its mental toll for sure. Currently shopping for a new therapist as my old one wasn't getting the job done, though. Is it really good to actually spend time building stuff there? IDK, Its not like I'm shooting for gaming industry or anything, so :X. I have conducted probably ~200 or ~250 software dev interviews in the last few years. Also echoing what emu said that by far getting the first job is the hardest. And interviewing really does get easier over time. I would take you up on this for sure. I'm sure its one of those things where i just need to practice, and be consistent about it, but I'll take any help or suggestions for sure. | ||

Seems like you might just be missing some fundamentals, which is common with people that skipped undergrad CS. What's a good way people recommend practicing algorithms? Leetcode premium is one of the few services in the software/tech world that I would ever recommend paying for considering you can generally find any other resource online for free. With that being said if you aren't targeting top tier companies that do leetcode/whiteboard interviews it might also be a bit overboard. As you said you aren't being asked to whiteboard that often, and if you are I doubt you're getting medium/hard level leetcode questions. I personally used it and most of the interviews I got here in Canada were far easier in comparison. The company I'm at asked me a variation of "two sum" which is literally the most answered leetcode easy on the entire site lol. If you haven't actually had to take a DS/Algo course for your Masters I'd recommend looking up some online OCW courses. Also look into getting a copy (actual copy or free PDF, up to you) of Cracking the Coding Interview. Easily the most recommended book for new grads. It goes over some of the basics and has a shit load of practice questions. If you don't mind math heavy/rigorous reading the CLRS Intro to Algorithms book is literally the bible for the subject.
