Would the game have survived on the same maps for all the years? no, the original broodwar ladder maps were awful. Also because they stopped balancing the game at some point the game was balanced with maps by the community.

It's not timeless, it requires constant updates like DotA for example. I think fps or fighting games are much better examples of timeless games.

Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about

They possibly could have balanced Blademaster if they changed some creep camps mb. dirty +6 claws they made a recent patch tho that fixed a bit the hu/ud and the orc/ne matchup

Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about its also what people expect of a game to be. i.e. broodwar was never even close to that part of balancing where every unit had a purpose. the protoss scout was stupid, the infested terran a joke and valkyries super situational (like one in a hundred situational). later in sc2 they tried much harder to not have gimmicky or straight out useless units in the game, something i think the community demanded as well. so if the players are content with a certain state of a game (i.e. tiers of characters / balance of units and/or maps), then the game will reach a status as "timeless". even though the same players will probably criticise another, newer game with similar "flaws".

I still love Turtle Rock, easily the best map ever created and I don't see how it could ever get stale. So beautiful and turtely. Suck it orcs.
