Yes, there will be most likely different modes of play. All Pick allows players to pick any hero regardless of faction.

But in any serious game mode both sides have access to all heroes right? Correct. A long time ago, people played "normal" mode, where players from each side could only play heroes from their side. They eventually started to add bans to their competition, and after Asia started the trend, both teams would pick from the entire pool. A few iterations later, and we have the current -CM (Captains mode) that is the standard for every competitive game.

There's a mode that locks the two factions together but most games are "allpick" which lets you pick from either side regardless of the one you're on Also, only one hero per game, so two sides can't have the same heroes

Curious, in competitive play, what modes are used? I've only seen a handful of high level games. Can anyone recommend good games to learn from?

From being answered in this thread, I believe something called CM (captain mode) is used, and as far as i know,it is all heroes available, and then 3 bans from each team, 2 hero picks from each team, 2 more bans from each team, and then pick the last 3 heroes. Assuming that is what you meant by "what mode"

Almost exclusively -cm mode.
Captain's mode (-cm)
The first player of each team is designated "captain" of the team. These players will excecute picking and banning of heroes, taking turns and having a limited amount of time. Bans and picks are divided into seperate phases:
Summary: 3 bans then 3 picks then 2 bans then 2 picks. Total 5 bans + 5 picks per team.
Ban Phase #1: Each team bans 3 heroes. 30 seconds for each step Process: 1-1-1-1-1-1
Pick Phase #1: Each team then picks 3 heroes. 50 seconds for each step. Process: 1-2-2-1
Ban Phase #2: Each team then bans 2 heroes. 50 seconds for each step Process: 1-1-1-1
Pick Phase #2: Each team then picks 2 heroes. 50 seconds for each step Process: 1-1-1-1
90 seconds of extra time is provided in each team's time bank.
Regarding learning, it really depends on what you intend to learn. It can range from general understanding of competitive Dota, the current competitive metagame up to the proper use of very specific strategies or heroes.
A somewhat broad approach would be simply to check out http://www.dotacommentaries.com/

Less than 48 hours!?!
Also at the above post, I can't find a single decent game that isn't 100% one sided in Hon so it may not be the best practice.

There should really be some sort of "Introduction to Dota from LoL" thread or "Introduction to competitive dota" writeup

I remember playing the early days of dota in RoC, playing ever since - now it is finally time Dota is stand-alone and can release the cage that is the warcraft 3 engine. I am SO FUCKING HAPPY about this, can't wait!

noob question: Why is there only one map? It would seem that other maps with the same mechanics would make a lot of sense. I mean not necessarily as many as SC2, but something like 5. Are all the items and heroes so fine tuned, that introducing more lanes or decreasing their count would hurt the game? If that is the case, even with only three lanes there still could be a lot of map variations.
