in certain modes (classic, iirc) you can only pick heroes from your side, but you can pick heroes from either sides in the mode used for competitive play.

Do Scourge and Sentinel basically have the same heroes, but with different names?
Not anymore.
It was something that stuck way back from the War3:ROC DotA era where each side could only pick heroes from their respective hero taverns.
Then "-allpick" was introduced and the old convention went the way of the dodo.
Even in the ROC era this was not exactly the case, except for the healers Soul Render and Purity's Disciple, but even then those two heroes differed. The differences in heroes is one of the many reasons why ROC DotA was considered imbalanced.
The actual affiliations of the heroes, whether to Scourge or to Sentinel, are unimportant as both teams have access to all of the heroes. The only actual use the affiliations have is for the lore.
Is there a way for a beginner to get involved? Played a few games in both dota and hon last night but just rage quit half way through because I was getting farmed and 90% of the people were pissed at me on my team. Don't get me wrong I use the builds and guides and know how to play somewhat just not pro and get ganked alot.
Does anyone want to form a little clan in HoN? This is for mainly newer players who want to play on a team that is more noob friendly and won't have to worry about getting insulted.

try playing around in single player or an ai map for a little bit and get the hang of how things work, also read some guides, there are some basic ones at playdota.com also id prefer someone who is new and willing to learn than a leaver 100% of the time, seriously in a perfect world there would never be a leaver

Well yea I know the game fairly well, I know about last hitting and denying and laning and jungling heroes and stuff but I don't really know the nitty gritty, was going to go read some guides tonight on them but my big issue was just getting out played.

at the core dota is a game of making your opponent think they can kill you, when actually you can kill them, which comes from experience, if you keep playing and actually try you will get better

on what platform do you play?
I was jumping between dota and HON. Just getting ready for dota 2
One of the things i hate about LoL is how rigid upper level strategy is, for instance, there is only one lane setup. i read this and was impressed that there are so many different laning setups. seems like it would make for very interesting macro strategy.
but is this strategy malleable? do people think up new cool team compositions and lane combinations, or unique new ways to play the game? or is it kind of set in stone now?
It changes all the time, there are a lot of heroes and people think of new stuff a lot, I think you would rarely if ever see the exact two set-ups go against each other twice.
so you seriously have to think creatively about all your opponents and their skills and your own team every time you play, from the beginning? that never happens in LoL until big team fights

I haven't played dota in like 3 years play a bit of hon these days
It is kind of similar to how the sc metagame works people will try builds and they will generally either fail miserably or work out and then the team they vs will have to compensate later by either banning that hero or trying to play a style to counter it further changing their playstyle. There is of course the basic common matchups and so forth but with what close to 90 heroes now there can still be insane amounts of variation

how would you coordinate anything like this in solo queue? it seems impossible. but it sounds really fun if you know 4 other people to play with.
