Having a series span an entire day felt like way too much to me. I know there are potentially ways to cut down on some of the lengthy downtime, but I think the whole thing is too grueling regardless. You aren't a pro team if you can't handle 7 games in a day. It's clear both iG and LGD lost (in a heart-breaking fashion) because they have ran out of strats to use and couldn't counter their opponents on a fly. The exertion factor is crucial in every sport, the hardships of challenge make the prize more prestigious, etc.

You can make the argument DK would have ended up the losers if it weren't for the break. Even if both teams knew about it, you can't help but think that if DK did not have the time to recompose themselves, IG would have simply run over DK with a 4-0 sweep. The Bo7 format didn't make the finals epic to me and even though DK did come back, it did not in anyway produce more exciting games than say a Bo5 would.

First game after the break with Kunnka support pocket strat and last game with Mushi SK vs best Potm in China weren't exciting? BurNing decided to play high risk, low winrate Viper carry against Pugna death ball in a game which might as well be their last game in the series is nothing to write home about?

Btw, I REALLYYYYYYYYYYYY want to know what Mushi said to the team during the break. Maybe it was mostly LD, Lysander and Winter joking about it, but I'm sure Mushi said something.

really shows the power and enthusiasm a team can get from taking time to breathe and recover.

Well then it's good they had a break. Nearly every professional sport that I know of has a break of one form or another, to allow people to rest, recompose if needed, rethink strategies and so on. I fail to see how 4:0 or 3:0 crushing victory could have been more exciting unless you are iG fanboy

The exertion factor is crucial in every sport, the hardships of challenge make the prize more prestigious, etc. I do agree that teams need to be able to go the distance, but my personal feeling is that BO5 hits an overall better sweet spot for both the players and the spectators in terms of endurance, quality of games, etc. It's not too much to ask pros to squeeze out that extra ounce of effort to win a big finals, but when a match spans an entire day and requires multiple breaks (some over an hour in length), I don't think any competitor can produce their best play consistently. Similarly, fans love to watch an intense, long series, but if a match starts during the day and you literally have to skip sleep entirely that night in order to watch the whole thing, that just seems excessive. Call me casual if you want, but it just seems like too much on both sides of the booth. It's similar to SC2, where (as TB noted while organizing the Scarlett vs. Naniwa showmatch) most players, casters, and many fans feel that you hit a point of diminishing returns for everyone in series that are longer than BO7. BO9s, BO11s, etc. seem awesome in concept, but for lots of reasons they usually just don't play out that well in practice. If more Dota tournaments start running BO7s and do so with a tighter schedule, maybe I'll be convinced that it's viable, but yesterday's games didn't give me a good impression of the format (even though I enjoyed the games themselves).
