Based on what I've read, I should be focusing on pure dps and Intelligence rather than Vitality like in earlier difficulties.
Does anyone have any tips for me to keep in mind as I go on from here? Like what spells can make a difference and which ones should I avoid getting attached to? What mentality must I have? Before Inferno, I've been pretty reckless with Soul Harvest, GotD, Gargantuan, and Acid Cloud with Pierce the Veil passive. I'm guessing that won't work as well anymore though...
you can use int/vit/all resist gear for A1 and A2 imo
it's A3 where the cost to get good enough int/vit/all resist gear for A3 skyrockets

do not ever just go into mobs for soul harvest, always spirit walk into monsters or eventually do it quickly and immediately horrify
over all in act 1 you can play just like up to hell (except summons suck more), act 2 is where the challange starts

Btw guys ive been talking with some people about gear, what to upgrade etc and I found a Dps spreadsheet that when used can do wonders for you. You dont have to pay millions of gold to find out if an item is better than what u already got and it really helped me alot. Credit goes to DrZey and the link to the spreadsheet is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtSFZM2UJ5OJdGFnWXVLTTRocDJFZk8tanduOHlBVXc#gid=0 Hope it helps someone as much as it did for me. its pretty easy using, just download it as an excel, open it, input your gear stats in the green fields and then copy paste it to the other one that is on the bottom, then replace any stats u feel like changing / upgrading and see the difference below.

I assume you are talking inferno here, you've managed to work with it into act 2? I abandoned it well before that. I simply needed more CC slots and found myself mostly using SW just as a 'run the hell away' additional escape/CC spell without ever getting close to the mobs. What do you use with it?

So I've got a kiting build for Inferno. I haven't seen it before today, it usually bats or splinter so thought I'd share as I prefer it over both and I'm finally making some real progress in act 2. I didn't come up with it but I can't seem to find the video I got it from so sorry about that, if I find it I'll edit in the source.

It's basically what you'd expect from a build with VQ, defensive abilities and one ranged attack. Use Haunt (which has some degree of tracking so quite easy to aim) with the rune to add quite a nice DPS boost to the initial few seconds, and then focus on using every other ability you have one at a time to kite mobs. Unrelenting grip and zombie wall to slow, hex pretty much as often as possible (12 second up time with 15 second CD) and then Spirit Walk and Mass Confusion either offensively or defensively to help keep VQ up.
The Jungle Fortitude in the initial build I believe was actually Spirit Vessel but I prefer JF at the moment.

I gave up Soul Harvest a while ago because I don't think it has enough usefulness to take up a slot when fighting Inferno elites

Looking for some advice from WDs that have had success in Inferno act 3+. I've only passed belial with help from a Barb friend. Tried every build I could think of and fully repaired about 3 times before I gave up on trying to do that encounter. Last part is as simple as it gets but my gear at the time meant I was losing 90% of my hp when snakes hit me, best combo for that was using a bears build but that became useless due to mana once the boss came and you had to single target. For the boss darts, locusts, haunt are much better tbh.
I've done act III up to and incl siegebreaker but it was a 3/4 wait for rezz timer, 1/4 kill packs - made it to beast with 5 NV though :D. Thing is with 25k dps(maybe less, 29.5k with pierce)/32k hp/400 resist all/3.6k armor it's too painful to farm (either many deaths or enrages).
Is my gear too bad or is my default build crappy or do I just lack patience and I'm supposed to kite everything, because as I see it it's a mix of kiting and playing melee as WD, without 30% extra DR? Using http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#aQfUPj!ZUW!aZccab Passive I might swap between jungle fort and spirit vessel; Mass Confusion can use with mass hist or paranoia.

I've been using this build (Leaping Spiders is teh winz), I got yesterday from the siege engines quest all the way to just before Cydaea (where I got trolled hard and lost my NVs).

Note that the Locusts are what I would consider purely personal choice. You could have Fear here, or Fetish Army, or whatever suits you.
The thing about spiders is that you only need to throw them in the general direction of the mob and they will leap to attack him. Their damage potential, although done over 2 seconds or so, is slightly higher than Splinters (check this thread for more info on the subject) and you can attack around corners and such.
For Siegebreaker, you need to play careful and safe. -First he will run at you. If he comes close enough, he will do his 3-hit combo fist attack. When he is coming at you, I recommend only to run from him, till he performs the fist attacks, then drop a few attacks on him.
-The points where he is most attackable are when he is performing a ground stomp (he will rise on his hind legs for a while, then stomp the ground around him - use this time to pound on him), and when he is setting up his charge (he will rise on his hind legs again, but not so high, and will "mini-stomp" the ground about 3 times with his front legs - attack him a few times at this point, but not too many, like 2 to 4 attacks depending on your attack speed. Mine is 2.17 or so and I was able to attack him four times and be safe against the upcoming charge). Btw, the pillars in the area can stop his charge cold, though he may break them afterwards.
The fight takes a while, and the most important thing not to do is to get overconfident or sloppy. Be safe. Dodge first, then attack, and don't get greedy. Grind him down. As far as I know, he does not have an enrage timer.
Edit: Shit, I didn't realize I had posted lol. Here is the complete post.

that is similar to what i use, but I can't kill siegebreaker, since hex and the wall thing dont seem to work on him
|
They don't, but you don't need them either. Just focus on dodging and slowly grinding him down. Movement speed increase on gear can be helpful though.

Patience, plenty of patience. The fight took forever to do. I wanted to have 5NV and I find bears to be easiest to do 5 NV for my char so it was basically stay away maybe shoot some darts. Pop army, spam bears for a couple of seconds - make sure to run if the tries to stomp and stay behind him. Then run, mostly in circles to avoid him charging on you, more darts, maybe bears if he happened to charge in nearby or does the 3 hit attack on your follower.
I used darts and spirit walk almost exclusively. I think mass confusion with stun might work also. Otherwise just popped army every 2 minutes with voodoo with mana regen - used maybe 5 sec of that for bear spam every 2 minutes - fight was 5-6 minutes.
I have to agree that darts + dots sounds much better but I never managed to actually kill elite packs with a dot/st spec.

Yeah, he's slightly faster than normal run speed but he does stop to cast often enough + you have Spirit Walk.

Found a offhand at a bargain price of 4 million. Increased my dps by 6k, now I'm sitting at 62k dps! If only I started saving gold (spent 15 million in the last week lol) to purchase a new weapon.. current one has a measly 975 dps..
|
I use almost the exact same thing except I waver back and forth about horrify - sometimes I go with haunt instead. My only problem is that after a while I feel like I'm just playing a shittier DH with this build. It's very good for a WD build don't get me wrong but it isn't very Witch Doctory, I dunno, hard to explain I guess. Wish pets would get buffed or something TT

Measly? Where are you in Inferno? Mine is 780 dps, I feel like a bum -.-

Mine is 780 dps, I feel like a bum -.- It has no stats though, just an ordinary blue. Found it from the underbridge pre-nerf. I'm about A3-ish. I can clear Inferno Whimsy pretty easily with a bit of glitching.
Now I need another 6 million++ to upgrade my 1h. I've a string of ears belt selling for 400k (1d to go), not too bad considering it has 2 lowest rolls and 1 highest roll lol.
Oh yeah. For 100k you can easily upgrade your weapon. If you have more gold to spend, then all the better.

Are you doing inferno with that?

Yes, it's a 780 DPS ceremonial knife with +110ish int, +120ish vit, +290 life on hit and +11 mana regen (not a naked blue by any means). I have been alternating between solo and group play (for example Belial I did in a group setting with barb + wiz). Yesterday I got to Arreat Crater Lv2 before heading off to sleep (I lost my NV due to sloppy play and goddamned worms killing me and botching my kill attempt on a particularly tanky elite pack), but it is a slow walk through Act 3.
No elite pack skipping either, except for 1 soul ripper pack right at some level's entrance (retarded lol). I just have high-ish Armor and Resistances.
