Won Ki "FruitDealer" Kim has been interviewed by mainstream gaming outlet Kotaku, which normally does not report much on eSports matters, or makes fun of it in their coverage. Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft actually did a pretty decent job here though, so it's worthy of a read through, and maybe some good traffic to them will pique their interest in creating more eSports/competitive gaming content.
Fruitdealer talks about his first introduction to Starcraft 2 and the adjustment period of 3D graphics, and his beatdowns at the hand of oGs' Spunky.
FruitDealer's first experiences with StarCraft II weren't the greatest. "I wasn't in the top-tier group at that moment and so was not that interested," says Kim. "It was very hard for me to adapt to the 3D graphics at first." Kim, who plays as the Zerg race, was considering switching to another StarCraft race. He also doesn't practice as much as you might think (the Zerg effect?), and didn't think he'd win the first GSL season.
"I thought I was good when I entered the GSL," Kim admits, "but I never thought that I could win the tournament." Read the full interview on Kotaku.

Wow, that sidebar on Kotaku is really annoying...wtf. Why am I so annoyed by this!
It's because the sidebar doesn't move with the rest of the page!! Gaah. And who the fuck puts a sidebar on the right side of a page!! And it doesn't have a scrollbar even though it scrolls!! GAAAH!!

Kotaku (and the rest of the Gawker network) just completely revamped their sites if you haven't been there in a while. Not exactly for the better.
|
Decent coverage. Hopefully more news like this will permeate the western gaming sites like kotaku. Kinda funny that Fruitdealers GSL win seems like so long ago now that we are into Code S and Team league.
|
Fruitdealer really did revolutionize Zerg when he played, though. Unfortunately, MarineKingPrime re-revolutionized Terran the next season, and FD style banelings just aren't viable anymore.
|
Oh rofl one of the comments "that is quite low for a pro, 300 - 500 should be you apm if you want to compete in something like GSL."
|
I hope he can pull himself from the gutter, so to speak. He is probably my fav zerg player and I want to see him do well next gsl. At least FD is getting press coverage more than lets say nestea or even mvp. Kinda weird actually but I'm not complaining
|
Only 3-4 hours practice? Damn, that's pretty low.
|
I think FD is still amazing but has had a string of terrible luck. Next season he is in a group with all protoss and 2 of the best at that (Genius and Tester.) Hopefully he can get out of the group
|
Im still very worried that FD will get knocked out first round again in gsl march. You need to to practice more, please do zerg proud.
|
Hell yeah FD!! Iwant you to win just so I can have the auralpleasure of your voice!!

Dammit Kotaku, it's not "Brood Wars"!

In terms of story, it was always referred to Brood Wars (plural). If SC2 ever refers to past events in campaign, I believe they said something along the line of "back during the Brood Wars...."
EDIT: Nvm, read article, I see what you're talking about.

"In this article, we interview FruitDealer four months after he's relevent."
Cutting edge news, there, Kotaku.

Sheesh - there's a reason why Ashcraft is more commonly known as Bashcraft. His inability to even proofread his own work and his distasteful choices for 'news' makes this story extremely disappointing. Oh well.
|
The article did a pretty good job highlighting FD's story. I didn't think it play to the usual cliches that plague most article about esports, which is a nice trend that is being adopted by a lot more gaming websites.
|
While there wasn't really anything new in there (though I didn't know he practiced that little), it's nice SC2 as an e-sport gets some attention from sites like theirs. You have to start small in that respect I guess, plus try explaining to someone not familiar with it that we've had 3 more GSLs since then.

best part when mainstream gaming sites makes stuff like this are the comments
seepheart Wed 09 Feb 2011 3:19 AM 150 APM? Damn! That is a lot. HandsomeHorse @seepheart promoted by FeatherNET [ :D ] Wed 09 Feb 2011 4:07 AM No that is quite low for a pro, 300 - 500 should be you apm if you want to compete in something like GSL.

I stopped reading Kotaku after they changed their layout. It's plain horrible right now.
|
Nothing new for me, but did a good job describing FD's story to those who aren't familiar with him.
Stories like this are always good to see on mainstream sites like Kotaku though, hopefully it will generate more interest in the game and e-sports.
