Won Ki "FruitDealer" Kim has been interviewed by mainstream gaming outlet Kotaku, which normally does not report much on eSports matters, or makes fun of it in their coverage. Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft actually did a pretty decent job here though, so it's worthy of a read through, and maybe some good traffic to them will pique their interest in creating more eSports/competitive gaming content.
Fruitdealer talks about his first introduction to Starcraft 2 and the adjustment period of 3D graphics, and his beatdowns at the hand of oGs' Spunky.
FruitDealer's first experiences with StarCraft II weren't the greatest. "I wasn't in the top-tier group at that moment and so was not that interested," says Kim. "It was very hard for me to adapt to the 3D graphics at first." Kim, who plays as the Zerg race, was considering switching to another StarCraft race. He also doesn't practice as much as you might think (the Zerg effect?), and didn't think he'd win the first GSL season.
"I thought I was good when I entered the GSL," Kim admits, "but I never thought that I could win the tournament." Read the full interview on Kotaku.

Wow, that sidebar on Kotaku is really annoying...wtf. Why am I so annoyed by this!
It's because the sidebar doesn't move with the rest of the page!! Gaah. And who the fuck puts a sidebar on the right side of a page!! And it doesn't have a scrollbar even though it scrolls!! GAAAH!!
|
Kotaku (and the rest of the Gawker network) just completely revamped their sites if you haven't been there in a while. Not exactly for the better.
|
Decent coverage. Hopefully more news like this will permeate the western gaming sites like kotaku. Kinda funny that Fruitdealers GSL win seems like so long ago now that we are into Code S and Team league.
|
Fruitdealer really did revolutionize Zerg when he played, though. Unfortunately, MarineKingPrime re-revolutionized Terran the next season, and FD style banelings just aren't viable anymore.
|
Oh rofl one of the comments "that is quite low for a pro, 300 - 500 should be you apm if you want to compete in something like GSL."
|
I hope he can pull himself from the gutter, so to speak. He is probably my fav zerg player and I want to see him do well next gsl. At least FD is getting press coverage more than lets say nestea or even mvp. Kinda weird actually but I'm not complaining
|
Only 3-4 hours practice? Damn, that's pretty low.
|
I think FD is still amazing but has had a string of terrible luck. Next season he is in a group with all protoss and 2 of the best at that (Genius and Tester.) Hopefully he can get out of the group
|
Im still very worried that FD will get knocked out first round again in gsl march. You need to to practice more, please do zerg proud.
|
Hell yeah FD!! Iwant you to win just so I can have the auralpleasure of your voice!!

Dammit Kotaku, it's not "Brood Wars"!

In terms of story, it was always referred to Brood Wars (plural). If SC2 ever refers to past events in campaign, I believe they said something along the line of "back during the Brood Wars...."
EDIT: Nvm, read article, I see what you're talking about.
|
"In this article, we interview FruitDealer four months after he's relevent."
Cutting edge news, there, Kotaku.

Sheesh - there's a reason why Ashcraft is more commonly known as Bashcraft. His inability to even proofread his own work and his distasteful choices for 'news' makes this story extremely disappointing. Oh well.
|
The article did a pretty good job highlighting FD's story. I didn't think it play to the usual cliches that plague most article about esports, which is a nice trend that is being adopted by a lot more gaming websites.
|
While there wasn't really anything new in there (though I didn't know he practiced that little), it's nice SC2 as an e-sport gets some attention from sites like theirs. You have to start small in that respect I guess, plus try explaining to someone not familiar with it that we've had 3 more GSLs since then.
|
best part when mainstream gaming sites makes stuff like this are the comments

I stopped reading Kotaku after they changed their layout. It's plain horrible right now.
|
Nothing new for me, but did a good job describing FD's story to those who aren't familiar with him.
Stories like this are always good to see on mainstream sites like Kotaku though, hopefully it will generate more interest in the game and e-sports.

The new layout, plus the new review system they have been using the last months are why I have stopped using Kotaku.

Wow, I really hope TL never updates like Kotaku- takes forever load their website. Interesting read if slightly outdated in who they are choosing to interview.
|
Kotaku needs to get the old site back. It's going down the digg's path.

Cool to see an interview with FD i guess

It's ironic because Gawker spent a loooottt of time taking shots at Digg for their botched redesign. Though I guess that's not really relevant to the article, just an aside. For covering SC2 I will forgive them for now. But they'd better keep the coverage coming if they want to keep me visiting ><
|
If you first read the article when it was published on the site a few days back, they actually modified it. They believed there was only two seasons of GSL and the article was entitled "The World’s *Best* StarCraft II Player Offers You The Most Delicious Fruit"
I wish FD was up to standards nowadays.
Edit: Haha, also the comments page was filled with complaints of how slow Kotaku is on the updates.... guess were all covered up.
|
This interview is so 2010. Not interesting at all.
|
Pity I can't stand to go to that website anymore! iframes give me brain cancer.
|
Am I just misreading this, or does the first part of this paragraph not jive with the second part:
"My mother is always on my side, whatever my decision is," Kim says, adding that his mother always advises him to do his best.
Kim left home at age twenty and has been living alone ever since. His mother never visited him to show her belief in her son, Kim says."Oh wait, she visited me once when I was in the hospital for an operation, but she paid 3-hour long visit at that time," he adds with a laugh.
|
I guess those comments from Byun(I think) are starting to make sense. He said FD doesn't practice enough and doesn't deserve Code S. That may very well turn out to be the case fairly soon.
|
Wow the revamped site is annoying. I want my content in the middle.
Otherwise, great interview.
|
I thought it was a really small amount of info, but at least that's a start.
Hope they'll get interested into doing more and more

Oh god you are so right. I hate whenever websites use that, its very counter intuitive.
On topic: Even if it is nice to see sc2 getting more mainstream gaming attention i think that a website/community/blog which is not taking esports seriously has no reason to be doing what they are doing. At some level it becomes like running a baseball website but only focussing on people playing catch in their front-yard.
With this interview i feel like they did a good job though and i hope to see them getting more involved in esports because it might be one of the best/most appropriately directed ways of getting pro-sc2 the attention it needs/deserves.
Still i feel a bit sad that FD didn't do this interview for TL for example
|
It's crazy that he can "not practice that much" and still be so good.
Although he still probably practices a lot in western terms.
|
Pretty good interview, wish he would have talked about his life with TSL. I lol'd at that apm comment. 500 apm rofl Losira's spam doesnt even get that high.
|
Nice of Kotaku to initiate the interview with FD but I'm not very fond of the new layout.
|

Reminds me of....Marat Safin (I may have the wrong player, i never followed pro tennis THAT closely when i played, my second guess would be Moya?). Going into big tournaments he would only practice like 2-3 hours a day and got a lot of flack from other players and the media because he was SO FEAKING good for practicing so much less than someone else. Side note that isn't so much like FD, whoever the player was explained it as tennis is just a job to me, I don't love it and don't want to practice 8 hours a day. I make enough money at my level not working my butt off.
Also I hope this season can bring FD back to the top. I picked him for my fantasy team as I feel if hes practicing just ZvP for the next 1.5 weeks he should be up to snuff. Don't make me regret my decision!!!

fruitdealer is right, if you have 150-200 apm without much spam you are doing a-ok

I read the article a while ago and had a nice d discussion with someone about how fd isn't performing relatively poorly. He said he's in code s how is that bad.i used i liquipedia to prove him wrong

Good read thanks <3 kotakuu

Since TL is not reddit and circle-jerking is highly discouraged, I'd like to chime in on my approval of Kotaku's layout. I like it a lot. Having a sidebar that is mindful of your location on the page and the size of your window is a good thing.
In UI design, one of the key considerations is how to maximize your use of the screen real-estate. Not to bash TL and other popular websites, but when the content on a page gets to be too long, the amount of screen real-estate being used is roughly 50%. The far left margins and the far right margins are just empty white-space.
I think this hate of their redesign is mostly as a result of people being averse to good change. In 2 months, people will probably be squawking about how good gawker's design is.
|
The problem is that it's not just a change in look (to one that's less appealing to me, not everything has to be an app and I liked the individual brands, personally), but a change in the way the sites are used. Digg made a change like that too, ask Reddit how well that worked out.
Not to mention that the code behind it is still a broken mess and they really need to do something about the scrolling. Click around for a bit, see if you remember where you were. I'm not even going to start about the iframe feel, though those would likely have been faster.
It's a gamble, literally in fact. Time will tell how well it works out, but it has nothing to do with circle-jerking or just dismissing any change. Though I'm glad at least some people like it
The side margins really don't contain less space now btw.
|
You can add ca. to kotaku.com and remove the !# in the URL and it will have the old look.
|
i would actually say all the top zerg should just reroll terran or toss. save themselves an incredible amount of frustration.

Nadas real APM is probably that high from time to time. He peaks 400+ in intense battles.. Then again, it's Nada we're talkin about :d Remember that sc2 APM is measured with the game speed, so it's slower than your atual APM.

I pretty much hate the new Kotaku layout, but nonetheless, good read. Hope to see more mainstream gaming media sites take notice of eSports... G4tv has, GameSpot has (to a small extent), PCWorld has totally jumped on the bandwagon. Now we just need Kotaku, 1UP, and others to follow
