In a recent interview with fragster at the IEM finals in Kiev, White-Ra stated that his chances of going to Korea and competing in the GSL. He talks about his career with relation to his marriage and also gives a few thoughts on balance and how long he plans to continue playing as well as what he will do after he retires.
fragster: So I'm sitting here with White-Ra, a well-known Ukrainian SC2-player. First of all, how do you like the event so far as well as the location and the players?
Aleksey 'White-Ra' Krupnyk: I really like this place and I think it's one of the best places in Europe to do this tournament. And I'm happy, because it's the first time that we have such a big tournament in the Ukraine.
...
Now that you are married, how does your wife deal with this situation? Does she support you a lot, or is it difficult when you have to train for an an event or something and don't have enough time to be with your wife?
White-Ra: Sure, she supports me very well. Sometimes we go together to a tournament like DreamHack. She came with me and she liked Sweden and my friends there very much. So I might go to Korea for the next GSL, which I don't know yet, it's like 50/50, but if I go to Korea, we will go together, me and my wife.
Talking about Korea. Is moving to Korea to play in the GSL an option for you?
White-Ra: Yeah, but it's only one tournament, the GSL, and if I go to Korea I cant play European tournaments. So it's like you have to make a choice.
Talking about the tournaments you attended in the last week. I think you won three cups last week, and the prizemoney was altogether something like 4.000 Euros. Is that a lot of money in the Ukraine? Can you make a nice living with that money?
White-Ra: Yeah, of course it's very good money, but for buying a car or a house you need more, of course. But first of all I want to show good games, and the pricemoney comes second. But having a family and a wife costs me a lot, so that is money that I spend on my family.

Omg i got nerd chills at the thought of white-ra in korea, also such a cool guy definatly one of my favorite players.
|
Some strong comments on the Korean SC2 scene there... somehow I agree however I'm in no position to make claims about the skills of Korean.
Very nice interview overall, thanks for posting!
|
Just one or two more years of the Ra?
|
Wow, if White-Ra goes to Korea, I have no doubt he would make it to Class-S.
Also, I'm glad to see that his wife is supportive of White-Ra's programing career. I was a bit scared when he fell off the radar a few months back after he got married.
|
White-Ra: Yes, I don't like it. Especially Steppes of War. I love macro maps, like Jungle Basin.
Ahahahahahahahahash
otherwise, ok enough interview.
|
Mr. Whitera,
I am planning on purchasing a new keyboard and mouse since both are the stock one's that came with my gateway computer and are not the best for gaming, what keyboard and mouse do you use?
Thx!
edit: hrm just realized this is not whitera himself post here, but instead a copy of an interview mr. whitera gave. =(
|
This is a double-edged interview, while I'm insanely excited about the possibility of White-Ra playing in the GSL, I'm extremely sad to know he'll only play for 1 or 2 more years
Also, Jungle Basin a macro map? wut?
|
Nice Read...
Keep It up White-Ra!!
Thanks for posting!
|
Can't wait to see what people come up with for Duckload fanarts.
|
The topic should say 'zerg is up' by White ra.
|
That ladies and gentlemen is why WhiteRa is the most awesome player in the world!! :D (most awesome not the best, but of course one of the best) WHITERA FIGHTING!!!
|
white ra + korea = explosion
|
He probably meant Shakuras or another 4 player map.
|
With how things are turning out this year for White-Ra, it might be a great idea.
|
Thx for the interview.
Best of luck Alek !
|
How does this guy manage to be such a badass while maintaining a job and a spouse? I'd love to see him in Korea showing all-in nerd punks how you play Protoss.
|
europe is gonna invade korea!
|
Well JB does have arguably the safest natural in the game, and at least until the mid game when the rocks can be taken down quickly.
I think he meant to say JB, even though it's mid to late game macro possibilities are bad
|
I have so much respect for this guy, I'd love for him to represent Europe in GSL.
|

Uh, what? ;-;
The map is pretty much a hellhole of aggression. Either you rush for that middle expansion, or you're out. Or you just go for a 2 base all in. Or I've been playing the map wrong.
But that's a damper. One or two more years of WhiteRa?
|
Jungle Basin a macro map, haha.
Hope to see him in Korea though, that would be sick.
|
Only 1 or 2 years more for the Ra?? No way
Oh, and even the Ra thinks Zerg is UP <3
|
I always felt that it was a good choice for white-ra to stay in europe/ukraine for bw to boost everything there and help the community grow and I think that with SC2 it is not necessary to go over there. GSL may be one big tournament but right now there is so much going on in europe and there is plenty of money to be made, plenty of fans to have and entertain :D
Props White-Ra, you are the man.
But 1-2 years of active gaming sounds good to me. You know how old he is ? And its not like he will get lost for the e-sports community. I am sure he will stay a while and listen.
|
This man is my currently active player... When hes gone i will weep.
|
|
I really hope White-Ra hits it big in 1 or 2 years so he can continue playing. Would be a shame to see such a good player leave. Hopefully we can see him compete in Korea before that !
|
White-Ra going to Korea would be so awesome. I definitely hope it happens, he's good enough to smash all those nerds over there.
|
If White-Ra follows TL, and he sees this post...
Do you like Cabbage Rolls and Perogies? I have Ukrainian heratige too and those are supposedly Ukrainain foods.

Congrats to the interviewer for actually managing to transcribe the entirety of a white-ra interview! Having spoken to the man himself, I know that's no small feat.
I am a huge white-ra fan, great guy, super nice, and I was worried like a lot of other people when he sort of faded away for a bit, only to be delighted by his recent results. Wishing him good look in the remainder of IEM, and I do hope he can/wants to go to Korea at some point to show off his skills.

Great interview, WhiteRa has looked in incredible form lately and him going to Korea would be really interesting. Some interesting opinions on the current standard of play present in the GSL too.
Perhaps with the JB macro map thing he just meant that you have an easy nat? *shrug*
|
I would love to see WhiteRa go to Korea the only thing that concerns me is like he said Europeans and Americans don't all in nearly as much, i'm worried that alot of the foreigners that do go ever won't be ready or well practiced for that.
|
What a great interview! Everything he has to say about the game is smart and extremely unbiased, which is so cool and respectable. His positive outlook on being a player, being married and playing, and moving to Korea, is inspiring and exciting.
|
OK first of all it wouldn't surprise me all that much if whitera used a russian client, meaning that map names might be confused. There's been some pretty epic games in jungle basin in like TvT and PvT so I do believe that it can be a macro map, however Zerg's gonna be behind, as they need more expansions than their opponent, whereas P and T are pretty equal on the same amount of bases.
|
WhiteRa... What a class act. It must be stressfull playing every game thinking. Man i need to win so i can feed my family.
|
This guy was the first pro-gamer I heard of, in the HDH Cool guy
|
After seeing white-ra stomp zergs left and right with his void ray + colossus, I can see why he'd think they need to be stronger haha.
It seems like a big investment to go to Korea. You need at least a month to make it through code A(and it's only worth going if you can get into code S), and It's always a gamble if he'll be able to make it through and get far enough into Code S to make the trip worth his time. He'd have to make it to the semi-finals of Code S alone for $4.4k, and that's 2 months of damn good results.

Excellent interview. Protoss love, baby! And how interesting it is to see another pro mention how weak zerg is at the moment. It has me awfully curious what is in store for them with the coming patches.
|
I'm not sure I buy 50:50. Maybe it's 50:50 in the sense that he has 2 options: go or don't. I'd say the chances are much lower than that.
|
Nice interview. Some of the things White-Ra says in it made me re-read it from the start except that in my mind I made it sound like IdrA's voice with a cartoonish russian accent. XD
+ Show Spoiler +Because of: Zerg UP, maps too small, GSL too all-in
Edit: ATTENTION, the URL mentionned in the article as being White-Ra's website looks like a parked domain which triggers my browser's malware/phishing alert. I haven't found a good way to contact its author, if anyone can do that, please go ahead.
|
Now that's a foreigner I can get behind in the GSL. Let's go WhiteRa!

well, all 3 of those things are true so I'm glad White Ra noticed it
If he does go to GSL though, yay for foreigners i like for each race!

IMO WhiteRa is playing better than anyone else in the World. Certainly better than any non-Korean.
He just executes people. He abuses maps and tactics like no one else. Countless times of late I've seen him out maneuver larger armies and come away with victory.
Curious what the community thinks... who out there is better than WhiteRa right now?
With cash on the line... I'd take WhiteRa over anyone!

WhiteRa such a boss, love this bit. I've been watching his replays a lot recently and I really like his style. Good on him for winning 3 tournies in the past week, that's amazing.
|
Yes! White-Ra in the GSL would be amazing. I'd really like to see how our awesome foreign brotoss might matches up with Korean players like TesteR. HuK and White-Ra could both potentially dominate the GSL, as I see it. I'd also really love to see White-Ra win a GSL with like 100 APM.

If every map was like jungle basin i would be pretty happy too hahah

Man, I love White-ra so much; he's so unbelievably positive. I'd love to see him rip through the GSL, but he's right, he tears through the European tourneys so much, he'd still probably be better off just staying at home and winning a bunch of smaller ones.
|
Some very strong words about the Koreans. Good to know he's not afraid to speak his mind. Nice interview.
|
How can you not like this guy?
|
I love White-Ra that's right I said it.
|
It is impossible not to like and respect pretty much everything this man says and I admire his honesty, even if it may rub some people the wrong way.

The thought of White-Ra trying to compete in Korea is totally incredible.. he has is such a dominant force on the foreigner scene and i'd love to see that translate into the Korean scene..
Also, having such a supportive wife is quite simply incredible! You are a very lucky man Mr.Ra !

White-rA is such an awesome player! If he does go to Korea, I hope that he does well. I'm hoping that his tearing through European tourneys will be a good sign for that. ^^;

White-ra fan here! Would love to see more of Whitera anywhere, anytime. Gluck to him in his decisions, whatever they may be!

Such a humble guy, loves his family dearly and is truly inspiring to other players

White-Ra is one of the top 5 foreigners ever, easy. I love it when he wins.

Ok, I love White-Ra. He was and is a great SCBW and SC2 player. But I think as the game progresses, and as he gets older, I think itll be very hard for him to make S-class. The competition is only going to get tougher as this game evolves.

Would be amazing to see White-Ra in Korea for the next GSL.
|
I love whitera.
If he goes to GSL he will win it.
|
South Korea would need 6 months minimum to prepare for The White Ra arrival, the whole nation would need to be on standby.
And Artosis needs to fire off some great questions, cause the interviews would be awesome.
There isent a player i would love more to see in GSL than WhiteRa himself!
|
white-ra must go to korea he is dominating everything, he is in very good shape the money is just too much to resist

He can make more money playing in Europe and the US. All these tournaments are better moneywise than a GSL participation except the finals. He would do it for the fame.
|
What? He said he plans for 1 or 2 more years of SC2? :'(
I hope he plays longer than that... he's easily my favorite player.
|
Great read!
White-Ra is one of my favorites aswell, really hope he dominates for a while now.

If White-Ra goes to Korea, he will win the GSL! Awesome player but it is sad that he will play only 1 or 2 more years.

Wife-Ra supporting on tour (:

That would be bad for e-sports. After a few weeks of Korean-style practice, tyler would be owning gsl so hard that Koreans would just stop watching. Please stop trying to kill sc2.

"Im planning to play sc2 a year or two" :O WhiteRa nooooooo! Maybe he's just being realistic though, I mean he IS old, even if SC2 isnt as mechanically demanding as is BW. GL in future endeavors though, hope to see you in Korea WhiteRa!
|
Do people recognize you when you walk around the city? And do they ask you to sign something or stuff like that?
White-Ra: Yeah, of course. Sometimes it costs me a lot of time, because too many people want to have a signature or souvenirs. But it's ok, it's normal. It's not imbalanced. It's the most normal thing in the world.
|
man seeing White-ra in korea would be great, I have no idea how he would fare but he'd definitely make it into code a and pretty far at that. We need more great foreigners over there. Great interview as well, some diverse questions.

Good luck to white-ra if he goes to korea his defintely my favorite toss player from europe

hope White-Ra gets one of the A class slots for GSL... would really help him out since he does have family responsibilities the younger guys do not and it would be a drag for him to work his way out of the preliminaries.

No, seriously.

Please go! We need more foreigners in the GSL. White-ra is undoubtedly one of the top foreigners and would do well I'm sure. Code S material for sure, although it may take him a couple seasons to work his way up to the top.

I don't want to imagine a SC2 world without White-Ra T_T

I am ultra impressed that he is still doing this with a family. Mad props to the guy for that, it's probably harder to manage a family and play a professional game that doesn't pay alot than being a kid who's really good at starcraft!

Is there anyone who doesn't like White-Ra?

Isn't getting to the top on a "vacation-time trip" going to be more difficult for players coming from Europe now with the whole new system? Or is there going to be tournaments like the old GSL with possibilities to play the best?

He's one of the few players I believe would do well in Korea. Power to him if he tries for a GSL.
|
white ra has the same problem that i think jinro had before 2 months ago and rainbow have, he is too rigid... crazy koreans ultra agressive style should throw his balnce off ....

White-Ra > Sara Lee.
Good luck White-Ra, whatever you choose. You're an inspiration to SC2 players.

you say rigid, I say solid. IdrA is also solid and look at how well he's done so far playing zerg. White-ra could potentially do better.

At 50%, I really like those odds.
It's hard for me to imagine a more deserving foreigner toss for the job.
|
Lmao, with the new upcomming map pool, solid macro players like whitera would rip apart GSL. Really sad that he consider only playing 1 or 2 more years. He will even miss out on the third protoss expansion.
I hope blizzard really cooks something nice in the protoss expansion for whitera so he will stay.

Funny how so many people think 4.000euro is sooooo much in the Ukraine ;d
|
I love white-ras interviews, they're honest and informative!
I don't see why everyone wants him to go to the GSL, he's got good chances, but he'll make better cash if he stays in all the European and possibly American tournaments. I can't wait for larger maps to come into play so we see more macro games as he mentioned. Will be epic!

I think no matter he goes or not, he will bring to us as entertaining games as always. I'm sad that he lost to SjoW in the IEM finals, but it's ok. Sure, SjoW showed us his best, while White-Ra was tired. Looking forward for the future games. Grand-Pa Toss HWAITING!

Shit, if white-ra goes to korea, I'm gonna have to cheer for the guy 100%. Even if he's up against my own countrymen. I just love this guy, he's been good for as long as I can remember, he beat boxer in broodwar and he's the most mannered person on planet earth. WHITE-RA HWAITING!

theres more money in europe than there is in korea (except you win the whole thing). stay home, white ra

Can anyone explain the meaning of the plush he is holding?

the average income in the ukraine is about 300-400 Euros so 4000 is a lot of money there for sure
|
I hope Ra will be playing SC2 for some more years tbh :O His play style is awesome!
|
WhiteRa fighting! Whatever decision he makes, I hope to see more of him either way.

White-ra is just such a nice guy

As much as I want to see him in GSL I think he better stay in Europe if his goal is to earn as much as possible.

have you seen the new jungle basin? it's super macro focused. take your 3rd, get a free 4th. no more of that split middle, sides crap
edit: also i adore his playstyle, but i'm not quite sure he can cut it in the gsl =/ still would loveee to see him prove me wrong =]

Is there anything you still miss in SC2?
White-Ra: Yes, I think they need to make Zerg a little stronger.
you heard it from the man guys!
|
I hope he goes there and shows how Europeans play. :D Go White-Ra
|
If it wsa IdrA saying Zerg needs to be made stronger everyone would be going crazy over nothing.
It's a fact that Zerg is still underpowered (and it will become even more so regarding ZvP).

If you advance to the playoffs, is there a player who you would like to play against in the quarter finals?
White-Ra: All players are strong, so I don't know. For me it's not a big difference who is going to be my next enemy.
fantastic answer, Mr. -Ra. baller-status achieved

The more pros in Korea the better and bigger StarCraft community both in and out of Korea will get.

I'm sure he would do fine, but only if he had the time needed to adapt. Besides, take white-ra now, and imagine him in Korea with the amount of practice he would get there?
|
White-Ra is awesome :D. It'd be cool if he went to Korea, I actually think he could make S class given the level he's currently playing at.
|
White-Ra would be a very cool addition to the foreigners in Korea. If he does he should definitely practice with the oGs and TL guys!
|
I like those odds from White-ra. Very exciting to see any player going to Korea for a shot in the GSL.
|
the mannered beast from the east, White-Ra allways been one hell of an awsome player and dude
|
My personal opinion is that kiwi would do better in the korean enviroment , white-ra is somehow predictable and we all know where this leads into korean games. Getting cheesed non stop

yeah. I guess someone like white-ra wouldn't be able to alter his style but play like a robot instead.
oh wait
|
Would be awesome to see him compete in the GSL. I wonder if he's really good enough for code S though? It's already super competitive over there. Either way, I'd support him and I have a bunch of Protoss friends that think he's the best lol. WhiteRa fighting!

Ye coz idra and jinro, the most succesful foreigners in korea are known for the creativity and off the wall play, oh wait-
|
He has to play more than 2 years! The protoss expansion will be coming around then!
|
white_ra is basically the anti-thesis of idra. Fun, aggressive play and humble pre-game talk. I feel bad for his wife though... having the #1 European SC2 player as a husband can't be easy. Duckload fighting!
|
For me, WhiteRa is the first European pro player that stood out at having personality as he played.
Fact is, he makes the game really exciting to watch. Very few other players are quite as entertaining and at that high level. TLO maybe.
He can be pretty damn aggressive, especially when culling the swarm, but he's not afraid to get 12 Warp Gates and macro if he needs to.
Also, the thread on TL with him photo-shopped was one of the funniest things I ever saw.
Good luck WhiteRa. Nice to know someone is popular and actually deserves it.

He was already at Baller status a long time ago...

Getting cheesed non stop WhiteRa? Predictable? This is news to me. Yes, he tends to draw games out into the later stages, but he is never afraid to end the game early if he thinks he can. Mr. Ra is one of the most versatile and solid Protoss in the world, aside from MC.
Furthermore, the idea that Koreans will always cheese a "predictable" player is non-sense. Even if you were right about both WhiteRa and the Koreans, WhiteRa is stellar at dealing with cheese.

More foreigners=more exposure=more attention from everyone everywhere! Hope he does well
|
Would be cool to see WhiteRa on Korea indeed, nice interview and a very humble player. Would help open up the SC2 scene worldwide. Gogo Ra!
|
Saw this guy at Blizzcon, I'm a fan!
|
WhitaRa is imba! I hope he goes to GSL. And I hope he doesn't disappoint if he does. Even if he wins or not. Just give us an impressive showing, show consistency. Give us a Rocky Balboa. That's all I'm asking.

If anyone hasn't seen White-Ra v. MadFroG at Dreamhack on Shakuras, check out that game, its White-Ra in super boss mode. Watching him play even though his face is a little expressionless brings me so much joy.

I remember that game, and though I wouldn't say it was either player's best game, I will say it was very entertaining. WhiteRa ftw!

White-Ra is going to Korea for the GSL!!!!

You speak the truth right there. i think also that whitera is the best player in the world, not the most skilled but he is so humble and is never trying to humiliate some1 else which is the most important aspect in being the top player and a proffesional player, unlike MCs crap -.-
