you are wrong it has nothing to do with stupidity but with naivety. From your part.

If you have followed last months events, obviously...

Blizzard doesn't care about bw or no bw. If they can make money on pro bw, they will probably be happy to do so. If they can't they will try to make it disappear. Period.

I doubt they will be happy if the BW scene dies. Nobody will be happy about it except the occasional hater. But for most SC2 players the BW scenes existance wont affect their situation at all. Blizzard is a company that wants to make a profit from their products, if they can make a profit by promoting GSL but not the BW scene, then they will do the former. If they can make a profit from both, then they will probably do so too. However, making a profit from the BW scene for Blizzard, in terms of license to arrange tournaments, is impossible due to dissagreements between the parties (Blizzard/Kespa) over that particular subject.

But the 'profit' should be the free promotion of their game. If they actually want to make pure profit from running tournaments it will never work. They never even mentioned BW's IP rights back in 2004/05 when the Korean scene was at it's peak and BW managed to reach 4.5 million copies sold in Korea, they clearly knew it was a benefit to them. When your game is shown on TV all day, has 100,000 people turn up to an event, and the main gamers are known all over the country it's stupidly shortsighted to think: how can i make more money directly from this? Other companies would pay MILLIONS to have this kind of promotion/advertisement.

I kinda liked the letter... Also I seriously doubt Blizzard wants to kill BW. I dont even think they want money from BW, they do probably want some kind of control of BW tho.

But I do think they want SC2 to live more than BW, and the whole issue have become so infected that its looking more and more like one or the other. I consider both sides at fault in this, Kespa should just have opened the door to SC2 from the beginning rather that trying to shut it out turning this into a war and Blizzard should have given up some of that precious control to Kespa if it meant both game flourishing. Now that it is a war i fear it will end up with one of them R.I.P.

It just seems like damage control after a fight with the cultural minister of Korea.

Very nice post! It's good to see that Blizzard really listen players and always consider doing what people want.

But, nothing about a LAN support or any kind of integration between differrent SC2 license's region / acoounts.

Yes, their negative chatrooms feature is pretty awesome.

I haven't experienced this personally, but isn't there some sort of limit on how many custom maps a person can have or make? I'd like details on this.

Yeah i think this is funny too. They support the creation of tournaments but along with Bnet 2 just put loads of obstacles in the way of actually running it. eSports is running in spite of Blizzard/Bnet 2 rather thank thanks to it.

I think it was 5 before but they recently up'd it to 10. I think.

What does this mean, the other way around???!? I

Korea wants blizzard to play sc2?
Blizzard wants sc2 to play korea??
Sc2 wants blizzard to play korea???
or even: Korea wants to play sc2 in a blizzard??

I've tried like every permutation and none of them make any sense. Care to fill me in on what you're going for here? It would make me feel better.

They don't _want_ to kill BW, but if the choice is between letting Kespa use it or killing it, they'd rather kill it.

SC2's integration into Battle.net 2.0 and new EULA was designed so that Kespa couldn't use SC2 even if they wanted to. I think it'd be more accurate to say that Blizzard wanted Kespa out of the picture for SC2 than Kespa not willing to run with it; they were willing for WC3 before it failed due to scandals.

I really would appreciate Blizzard not forgetting that old game of theirs that has 10 years of professional gamingm is perfectly balanced, has more than 100 pros and awesome maps and I hope they at least keep making tournaments and giving as much money as they are giving to that new game of theirs that has horrible balance and amateurs cheesing their way to semi-finals of championships that has horrendous maps.

Apart from it, thanks for chat channels.

It's a valid point that Blizzard has made money on BW sales in Korea due to its popularity. But if that kind of promotion is in conflict with their intention to be the owner and issuer of tournament license they have to enforce what they see as their rights to their own IP. Another fact is that BW has already peaked and its life cycle is almost over as a retail game that is directly profitable for Blizzard. The only reason Blizzard have to ensure the future prosperity of the BW scene is good will. And that is why we now have this letter.

/flame on

I don't get why there are people in this thread saying its a "nice" post, unless they just don't follow the SC2 scene, in which case it may be a "nice" post for them because it summarizes everything upcoming that the fans already know about. For the rest of us, however...

Morhaime states, "I hope I’ve addressed some of the questions", but he literally states nothing new in the post. The closest question he comes to answering is "Is Blizzard deliberately influencing Gretech to be assholes with negotiating?", and he of course can't reveal any negotiation details anyway so he gives a vague statement that he "remains optimistic".

Nonetheless, interesting read, thanks Waxangel.

E-Sports makes very little money compared to Blizzard's bottom line and will probably continue to do so for SC2's duration.

I'm confused why people see them as trying to dominate their IP.

Haha that reminds me the "Nada is the Mondragon of the korean scene"

On topic, the letter is nice, but if BW sold that many copies in Korea, it's because of the popularity of the game. They're doing it wrong... They should make the game popular first, sell a shitload of copies, and then big tournaments will be held, and a real progaming structure may arise.
