i have had a rather severe problem with my computer for about 3 weeks. if i leave my comp for any more than a few hours (ie:work, sleep) , it will go to "sleep" and it will not restart or reboot. if gives me a msg, if at all, saying that windows can not start becuase of this file windows/system32/system i downloaded a shareware pcdoctor program, which told me i was missing the file cmmgr32.exe, which is suppose to be in the winddows/system32 folder. i attempted to repair this through the system recovery console off the xp cd, but failed. i have extensively searched the web to find and dl the file, but failed. so.. i need help with one of 2 options a)using the recovery console b)finding an entact version of the cmmgr32 file.
any help would be appreciated
the program is probably gay
reinstall everything or contact your vendors
i have reinstalled xp about 5 times in the past 3 weeks. i am just not installing that specific file. it is a connection manager file. there is also a cmmgr32.hl_ file that i have, but just not the .exe file.
If it's required for the OS to work, it will get reinstalled when you reinstall the OS. cmmgr32 is your dialup networking connection manager, and you'll have to get it from someone else using XP if you need it (I could give you the win2k version but it won't work for you).
It should not have any effect on your computer refusing to wakeup from hibernation. Your best bet is to disable monitor and hard drive power down and see what happens.
hmm thnx. i have run a registry optimizer program, and i have 47 keys that are corrupt/missing, so it may not be the cmmgr32 file. i have clean installed my OS several times, and it does not seem to help. i have a cracked vers of xp, so i cant get tech support-_- so far today, i have been able to restart my comp. i think the problem lies when i leave it on, so im not sure what else it could be other than a "sleep" related problem. any h elp is mucho appreciated
Well, a cracked version of XP is pretty problematic in general because you can't get service packs or updates. I would suggest using an older, activation-free version of windows (like 2000).
You may want to consider fdisking and reformatting your drive in case you have some virus activity going on
hmm already reformatted with fdisk a few times, i will consider 2000. thnx
uhh, when u say clean install i dont thionk ur doing a full clean install. tell me exactly the steps u take when u install
well, the last time, i use the xp install cd to delete and format both partitions. then install xp on partition 1. first time i did it, i used a 98 fdisk to format.
put the cd in ur cd rom, restart, keep pressing whichever f key brings up the boot list, i think its 10 or 11, choose ur cd rom, choose to format ur drive, when u do delete all partitions, then create new ones. that is a proper clean install

did that. i installed this same xp when i build the comp, and it was fine for a good 8 months, so i tend to think its not the sw on the disk.
I dont think you're missing any files if you did a clean install - I think your computer is going into standby or sleep, and some retarded program is crashing everytime you resume your computer
Go to control panel, open power properties, and choose the "always on" scheme, and also disable hibernation
Also check your bios settings - hit del or f2 or whatever it says when it boots up, and disable any power saving modes or options
You should check out www.windowsupdate.com - but then if you're using the same key that the majority of the cracked installations use, it probably wont let you in... or worse.. so at least get a key generator to install service pack 1 if you haven't already

I'm using cracked version of XP, with a crack for SP1. I've been able to install all patches w/ this crack so far, so no problem.
(Search on Kazaa, Windows XP Activation hack)

i have been able to install updates in the past, but can not now. i have followed all advice, and hope it works!
I kinda have a similar problem as well if anybody can help me. For the last 4 months, the sleep button when i go to shut down, is that grayed out color and you can't click on it whatsoever. The only options are restart and shut down entirely. Also, normally after 15 mins or so of inactivity it would enter sleep/standby mode but this no longer happens as well. The Gateway guy didn't even know what was going on... does anybody here? BTW I have Windows XP.
Why not just turn off sleep mode then?

Don't advice downloading cracks from kazaa..as 90% of them are viruses, lol.

btw, I don't know if winxp has the gui version or not.. but win98 had a nice program that'd let you choose which file you wanted to extract from the install disc. start>run>sfc
maybe that'll help

maybe if u had the software pre configured to do so before u formatted
intotherei, that is when you do a "quick erase", as it is only marking the data as erased, then gets overwritten as you write files over it. A full format completely erases the data and it is unrecoverable
i think most info can be recovered, but it may cost alot of money and a trip to a lab. my comp did not die while i was a work, so hopefully it is fine now thnx all for help
well if nothin works then delete all ur partitions...make a new one...format ur comp using "format c:"...dont format it usin "format c:/s" cuz u dont want anything in ur HD at this time...then reinstall ur windows xp...dl all the windows update except the "windows SP express" shit cuz it wont work on cracked XP..hope that helps
Dude what I recommend is using Windows XP Professional, GEtting a cd key from me, and you can update and do whatever you want with it. ONly idiots look for cracks on kazaa =(

Hovz your stupidity blows me away sometimes. Why dont you just shut your fat lips so people that know what there talking about can hear themselves think for 2 seconds. Fuck your a fag. http://www.usenix.org/publications/library/proceedings/sec96/full_papers/gutmann/index.html

Forget xp.. it sucks. If you wanna stay with microsoft, get win2k professional. The only microsoft os worth its money.
Agreed, XP is for people that need it, I need it for my work, but If i had a choice id use Win2k Pro, If you need that just ask
canadian logic at work. schooled if u want to spend lots of money and disect a hard drive maybe u can recover some data, but for all intents and purposes, if u format your drive all data that was on it previously is gone. why do u even come here?
HovZ, dont be fucking dumb, if you format a HD, that doesnt mean all your virus' will magically dissapear. What if the virus is in your ram when the computer is running, and you restart your comp to format. Sometime it takes up to 10 minutes for your ram to clear after you turn off your computer. If you want to format it PROPERLY follow this order.
1) Restart Computer in DOS mode with a Win98 Boot Disk 2) Once in DOS, type format C:/q 3) Type fdisk, delete all partitions 4) Type fdisk /mbr 6) Turn off computer, leaving it off for 20 minutes 6) Turn it back on, boot with boot disk, go back into fdisk 7) Remake partitions 8) Format again to make partitions useable. 9) Boot with your favorite OS
I can't guarantee this will completely wipe out all virus', theres A POSSIBILITY that they can infect your bios, but thats like getting struck by lightning.
And hovz, ive seen a guy with a program that cost 150 bucks format a drive, and get most of the files off of it 40 minute a later with a few clicks.
if u have a virus and u format ur drive, for all intents and purpose the virus is now gone. viruses that remain in ur ram will have cleared by the time u format
http://www.bitmart.net/ Seen it work before u fuckhead. DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW RAM WORKS? OBVIOUSLY NOT. PLEASE STFU YOU IDIOT. YOUR RAM DOES NOT CLEAR UNTILL YOU TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, AND THERE IS NO REMAINING POWER TO IT, OR UNTILL A FUNCTION TELLS IT TO CLEAR. OTHERWISE, ANYTHING IS IN THERE. WHEN YOU FORMAT IT DOES NOT CLEAR YOUR RAM.
oh, sp when u turn ur comp off and on to reach the boot menu, i guess thats not turning it off idiot
I'm going to recommend a marriage counciler for you two. Typically, you don't shut the machine off when formatting, rather restarting it, when leaves resident memory intact. You'd have to leave the computer off for like 30+ seconds to clear it..I've never done that during a format myself, or known anyone who has
so ur telling me when u restart a comp it doesnt go off?
Again HovZ is wrong. RAM only clears when there is no power to keep it there, and that can take up to a minute-10 minutes depending on your power supply. Power supplies can hold power after being turned off because they have capacitors in them. Have you noticed when you restart, the power actually doesnt go off?
no actually it does go off
seriously u guys are taking this 2 far. just reset the damn ram if you're paranoid
schooled is right it take 10 minuts....
the power doesn't go off when you restart

depends what ram, some is volatile like edo, sd ddr can hold its memmory for a while before it gets wiped

Or you can just not hook up to the internet, and get norton and the windows patches on there before u hook up to the net. Burn them to a CD with another computer.. HovZ your wrong, power does not go off, the bios simply resets. Idiot is wrong again.

I have to agree with 'IntothereI'. A full format does not erase all the areas of a hard frive. Intuit Corp (Turbo Tax) a few years back was using a Pirate Prevention routine that used an area of Cyl 0, Trk 0, after the MBR that does not get touched with normal formatting. You have to use a use of a special program to annihilate that area of the disk.

I heard you like to revive old threads, but don't bother if he doesn't reply, I can guarantee you he has been waiting for your answer, 3 years are nothing.-.-
