Lately a lot of people have been talking about how they hate how memes are beaten to death on Teamliquid. Most people agree that when a TL specific meme first comes out, then it's okay to hop on the bandwagon and make a joke about it... but then it has to just die. We can disagree on exactly how soon is too late, but after a while it becomes obvious.
The purpose of this thread is to identify memes overdue for extinction, and then make it known that they are no longer good for repeating. In general, the older the meme, the worse it is to use it (there are obviously exceptions where it is okay to use it, but be careful). Red means the oldest memes. Do not go near them. Green means not quite as old, but still past the point where you should really consider using them. Blue means they made the list of overdue memes, but they aren't completely old/dead/beaten.
Teamliquid Memes (oldest first):
1: PRESSURE: Relic, thanks to LastShadow. More information required.
2: Romania: When a few Romanians in the same time period missed the sarcasm of a few posts, it was decided that being Romanian is synonymous with being unable to understand sarcasm.
ex: Bob is being Romanian <in a post where he didn't get the sarcasm>
3: down down down: The TSL's intro song was called "Prayer of the Refugee," and the particular part of the song used was the chorus. The lyrics are as follows:
Don’t hold me up now, I can stand my own ground, I don’t need your help now, You will let me down, down, down!
Don’t hold me up now, I can stand my own ground, I don’t need your help now, You will let me down, down, down!
4: It's a replay?: Also from TSL. Because of the possibility cheating and/or technical difficulties, the broadcast games were always played beforehand, then the commentators commentated on the replay. Many people on IRC and on the forums did not expect this and were somewhat offended, exclaiming "It's a replay?" when they found out. Now it's become a sort of running joke.
5: Protoss is ez (1a2a3a): Around when bisu became popular, protoss become a more successful race for several reasons. A joke propagated that protoss is the easiest race, and that you can get away with just using 1a2a3a to win matches.
ex: Bob: Damn almost all of the letter keys on my keyboard are missing. Jane: Is the 'a' key still there? You can always switch to protoss.
ex2: Bob: Can someone find a protoss strategy guide for me? Jane: google '1a2a3a'
6: combat-ex: Talks really quickly. More information required.
This is just a preliminary list. Honestly, I don't use that many memes (only a few exceptions) so I'm not that familiar with a lot of them. Please feel free to correct them.
Ways to improve the list of Teamliquid Memes:
1: Specify a necessary change to the chronology (ie protoss is ez came after combat-ex)
2: Give more information about the description of the meme.
3: Give a better example.
4: Suggest a meme for incorporation into the list. Give as much background as you can.
5: Suggest the lines for red/green/blue be drawn differently (shifted) to better represent the danger levels of these memes.
Remember, only you can prevent overused Teamliquid Memes!
Staff, if you want to hijack this please go ahead. If you think it does not need to exist, then please remove it. But I think something should be put in place since there is so much bitching lately about memes.
edit: btw if you want to blast this thread with memes then go ahead and get it out of your system lol
But it gets extremely old after awhile =P. Especially when people kill the 1a2a3a protoss ez joke (though I'll admit that I've conformed to it a couple of times ;( ).
I recall 'down down down' was just something people spammed in IRC as the song was playing, didn't really think it was a meme. I think combat-ex was about 4pooling yourself to a high rank on ICC? (not sure on that)
I remember jlig (just let it go), and one more that was related to it, might be meme-ish. Or maybe that incident with the Bear? don't remember the exact threads these took place in.
edit:

Oh, maybe klazart bashing might count. Yea we know he's not that great, but it's not really that funny to bring him up every time there's a new commentator =p.

Because of the prevalence of the word "down," people on IRC would spam it when the intro came up. Due to a stream issue where the stream failed around this time, people joked about the stream being "down" as well.

1. Some guy kept saying Bisu build at the end of all of his posts in a specific thread. People picked up on it and started putting it at the end of entirely unrelated posts.
2. Klazart thinks that every early probe sent out is the beginning of a Bisu build. "GUYS I THINK THIS MIGHT BE THE BISU BUILD!!!"
I don't think they should be activelly suppressed lol... but there definitively should be a list of them somewhere in the site (like this thread).. casual members are often completely lost with some of the tl.net specific memes.. - it be nice to have a thread to point for those wtf? PMs asking u to explain a particular meme.. most people have already a hard time keeping up with the internet ones..

I don't know if this counts, but when I was newer here, I was always confused while people always randomly said "hi carlo" to a post. They were actually referring to Carlodajin and the way he used to post.
Ex: I love it...it's cool....Best is the Best...except Bisu...
"Over 9000" is probably one that irks me the most. It's not even from Starcraft and thesauruses are free with the internet.
And yes, I think they should be suppressed. Rarely are they worth it and using them is just like "I want free laughs" or "I can't think of anything original to save my life".

Disagree because this thread does not invade. You can steer clear if you want. Well, I suppose that's true unless you plan on using old memes since people could always point you to the results of this thread... but that's not a problem right?

Yeahhh, I really am quite annoyed by that one. It seems to be one of the most used from what I see, and I fail to fully understand why it's funny. I mean... I used to watch that show, and I know what they're referring to, but I guess I just don't see the connection. I guess that's why it's a meme and not a joke. =P
I want to punch someone every time they make a "STORK SILVER MEDAL LOL" joke. The joke itself is true and would probably be funny if not for 600 posts on every single MSL/OSL thread where people think they're being clever by posting it.
Additionally the generic bad catchphrases find their way here a lot (moar, you're doing it wrong, fail, lulz, anything with the word epic) all of which only degrade the quality of any forum.
Just because they got me a warning and a temp ban when I didn't know we weren't allowed to mention those. Seriously though, after reading the guidelines and observing member posting for a bit I never knew that was forbidden. For the sake of future members, add those! >_< EDIT: Now in the future we can put this link in forum guidelines? or link people when they get a warning to this thread?
I'm just voting for what I think the memes are, not on whether we should be stopped from saying them. I still think a lot of these are kinda funny. For partial explanation on Combat-Ex check out this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=74543

What? I don't get it. Is this a meme?
Its from a Blizzcon interview with Savior in English. One meme I don't think we could ever kill no matter how hard we try is:
July fat jokes. (Heard it last time today by both lilsusie and tasteless on gomtv livestream ._.)
Other memes I can think of are: Relating Savior to Hitler (old) Titty sambo (maybe not really a meme except on irc) Korean culture being weird (fan death etc.) Yellow/Stork always in 2nd place. Midas ceremony failures.
I just realized... if people get banned for mentioned meme's half of the posters on this site are going to get banned xD The threads will be so empty D=

This isn't a list of bannable offenses... this is a list of suggestions for what to say or not say, and how to identify which are actually memes, and what they mean. If memes are reduced, that doesn't mean people won't post anymore necessarily. I'd like to think it would improve posting quality with more thought and original content... but if it did reduce postcount, at least it would weed out the less necessary ones.
We could easily add 20-30 more by just reading through that Starcraft Demotivational thread.
I agree with Physician though. I think its a good idea to list all the memes somewhere, not necessarily to kill them of. Memes are fun if used with discretion, especial when you are reading the forum at 5am. I think the "and Annihilation" part of the topic should be removed.
Nice post, the whole thing really legit that you had a reference artical and whatnot. Turning over a new leaf for TL posts, what a coincidence that that's the topic of it too huh?
"IT'S OVER 9000!" is used a lot but you shouldn't get rid of it as it makes me feel better about my day when I see it used in a thread.
Although I admire what you are trying to do (Don't agree with it, mind you, but believe you are doing it for what you believe to be the betterment of the community.) I think this thread will either accomplish nothing or make negative progress by reviving otherwise forgotten memes. Unless this thread leads to use of these memes being a temp-bannable offense (which would require, imo, an addendum to the ten commandments) there simply is no weight behind decisions made within this thread anywhere but inside this thread.

I am of the belief that clarification of memes will reduce rather than increase their usage. If I am wrong, we can always remove this of course. Thanks for your constructive criticism. I will consider it as I monitor the effect this thread has on the community. However, I hope this doesn't officially become temp-bannable :o
In game I still use RTFM some times (read the fucking manual) whenever someone does something stupid, asks something completely stupid or just shows a general misunderstanding of the game and you can't be arsed to explain it since it's in the manual. Dunno if it originated here though.
This thread reminds me very much of the rampant glorious beauty of the internet that radiates so strongly in its sheer dominance despite the ugliness that festers underneath.
Memes are great, but work better when they are not abused. They're kind of like women in that regard, or some other less offensive simile.
The "Bisu build imo" comes from a host of strategy forum topics in which someone asks for PvZ advice for a very specific scenario and gets told to use the bisu build as if it's some kind of rigidly timed build that always works against anything.
I always thought the bisu build was first seen in bisus MSL final vs Savior. Protoss fast expansions were quiet common by then and corsair/dt combo has been used since the dawn of time. It was just that the combination of them was kind of new. Before those games Corsair/dt was a one base tech strat where you got 2-3 corsairs and a few darktemplars and then expanded. At least I had never seen anyone go fast expand into a large amount of corsairs (not stopping after 2-3) in that way. Savior had big problems adapting to the new style and lost 0-3.

Yeah. That's what the bisu build is. But whenever anyone asked about its application in a specific context or just general PvZ advice people would say "do the Bisu build" which by itself is utterly meaningless. Similarly Klazart calls every PvZ FE opening the Bisu build without elaborating at all. "Bisu build imo" is a parody of that useless type of game analysis.
Sorry. I just woke up ^^ I should have payed more attention when I read your post. I agree. It was crazy on pgtour and battlenet the months after those games. Every protoss player was playing that strategy even though almost none of them had the multitasking to make it effective. I think those game ended all the ZvP imba threads and for a while we actually saw some PvZ imba threads ^^

atm "I see what you did there" is becoming annoying.
"I see what you did there" has been around forever and it's still awesome.

bisu build. was actually from a single idiot in one of the Tourney threads (maybe Jaedong vs. Stork?), who thought that every FE was a Bisu build. Obviously it existed before then, but that's when we started saying it all the time. o.o
you should add "When will the ladder be up?" Possibly the biggest letdown in the past four years where a large SC Gaming Ladder promised a ladder that never happened.
I thought that combat-ex joke was just about this phrase: "hithisiscombatexcomingtoyoulivewithanotheraudiocommentary". He doesn`t talk too fast in the rest of his commentary , buuuuuuuuut, it may be just because I`m romanian
