it's not my first time, but i just had bubble tea, and i have always wondered what these tiny purple chewy pearls were made of. i looked it up on wikipedia, and it says that drinking too much bubble tea can cause cancer?

now, you might say that anything can cause cancer, but it also says that the bubble tea stores in canada were shut down by its governmental health department because of it?

anyone else knows about this? i don't drink it often. it's been like two months since i had one, so i'm pretty sure drinking it once in awhile is alright, but wtf? drinking something like this causes cancer?

please, avoid stuff like, ANYTHING CAUSES CANCER, since i don't see them shutting down fast food stores and others.

thanks.

First off you should have fully disregarded the entire statement as false when you read the word "canada" usually things aren't really on the level there, they don't have any guns so they are scared of everything.

Next up, I highly doubt that this Tea can be worse for you than driving a car or smoking (dunno if you do) so if you hella worried go talk to a doctor if not just chug that shit.

Canada not having guns is a smart move if anything.

okay, i did some more research(?), and i found that tapioca (the pearls) creates cyanide?! , but we have figured out a way to remove the poison, so that it's edible.

anyway, i found this article, in which it says that the cyanide from tapioca is used to TREAT cancer? wtf.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/317467.stm

-_- i'm confused.

very true. it's just too bad that the US can't really get rid of guns because of all the things that would happen once guns are removed. In societies where guns have been banned for a while, the crime rates are pretty low i.e. Japan (perhaps due to how they were raised).

There are tons of bubble tea places in Canada. I have no idea if a few were shut down or not, but if it's implying that they were all shut down due to widespread panic, that's totally false.

ok, outside of the guns debate...
i think bubble tea is not worth the risk of cancer.
yes you may call me overly cautious and paranoid but bubble tea is not good enough to risk it.

for example:
creatin is not the small chance for potential long-term harm.
bubble tea is not good enough to risk cancer.

Its always good to weigh the pros and cons and choose based on that, but I'm doubtful that drinking bubble tea presents a very large risk of cancer. The wikipedia article has no citations whatsoever for its claims that tests have revealed the risk, so unless you can find some decent ones, I wouldn't be all that worried.

good thing i always drinking bubble tea moins the tapioca

milk tea is fine without crap clogging my straws.

as for guns, japan has a more homogenous culture than America. No shit crime is low there. In America, its so damn big and too many different ethnicities that no wonder there are murders. If you ban guns, criminals will still have guns... lol

Considering Canada has better overall health, not due to our free health care but because we eat better, or aren't normally as lazy as the "typical" American?

I did some googling and I couldn't find ANYTHING about any bubble tea closures due to a cancer risk in Vancouver, richmond etc. One of them did close but that was due to bad maintenance

So I'd say the wiki entry is wrong and it's probably just a prank.

Anyways, on a more general note, cancer scares, similar to this one, are almost always blown out of proportion or based on bad research. Most studies can CORRELATE a certain agent to cancer but most definitely cannot prove the agent CAUSES cancer. We should take these news flashes with a grain a salt and just try to avoid nuclear fallout waste while enjoying our bubble tea.

well, bubble tea is usually fresh fruit, or powdered drink mixes.

add some pearls, which are made of starch, and i dont think you have a deadly concontion of a carcinogen, just yet.

it slike drinking juice wiht ice and then eating .....starch or a potato....

Health Issues

There have been many debates over the fact of bubble tea's nutritional value to the body and recent studies show that bubble tea consumed in very large amounts may be detrimental to your health. Many tests have claimed that drinking too much bubble tea may be one of the many causes of cancer in the Asian culture.[citation needed] Those who consume more than 2 bubble teas a day are more susceptible to such threat. Because of this threat to the public's health Governmental health departments in the Lower Mainland area of British Columbia, Canada have began to gradually shut down various bubble tea stores in Vancouver and Richmond.[citation needed]

this is what pisses me off about wikipedia sometimes... Why hasn't this been deleted yet? It has no citation and has no concrete reasoning behind its big, and probably false statements.

on bubble tea.. I always hated tapioca, the lack of flavor + its texture is just really gross to me. Lychee ftw

Ahaha, I love tapioca pearls
First google result I got for "tapioca pearls cancer:"
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080330013024AANN2dO
straight to the point, other answer is pretty indepth for a yes/no question.

I also love Wikipedia, and I usually disregard all statements that end with [citation needed] anyways.

WTF? Canada has guns... I don't know if that was a joke or just an incredibly skewed view of Canadian society?

Cmon at least be honest. Japan has a completely different demographic and cultural background.
