I played on a 28.8k 22yrs ago, it wasnt great. Hackers were not my main concern, 2v2/3v3/ffa were fun, UMS too, but the blizzard ladder with fast speed and the batshit crazy maps (long divide or whatever it was called for instance) i do not miss.
I miss the active channels and the game right after bw came out though

Have to admit I laughed in his other recent thread when he said he got invited to play in Korea in 1999 but the email went to spam so he didn’t see it.Now he’s complaining about new maps, when he quit ladder ‘Green Valleys’ was in the ladder map pool.

Maps are too big, it makes the games too long and boring. Also, fastest speed makes the games too short, we should play on slowest speed because that is more exciting. You all agree with me, but you don't realize it yet.

As a former Starcraft2 player, an artist and a chess player i can totally relate to that. The problem about Sc2 (and seemingly nowadays BW) is that it doesn't feel like art and honest self expression, it feels like technique and speed only. And the only thrill I feel is not one of an artist or a chess player who goes in deep state of conciousness when everything around me after a game seems so much brighter and my mind gets more open. No. Its the other thrill Plato talks about. The thrill thats about speed, fast heartbeat and technique only. Look at how simple Go and Chess are built. StarCraft 2 has way too many stimuli. It stresses the hell out of the body, and yes even when you're accustomed to it. You won't feel the stress, but the outside gets boring and you will always want to have more speed, because thrill of speed is addicting. But that's not the flow state, get that straight please!
Starcraft 2 with its monologic playstyle, fast speed and exaggerated purpose of mechanics promotes exactly this thrill of speed.

I remember when the ladder wasn't played on Fastest.
I don't miss this exact thing for sure. lol

Maps back in the days were ridiculous. We grew in our knowledge, game sense, and in many other aspects to know better.

Have you tried to play on LT or some other old-school map vs capable Terran player recently? I haven't been #1 on the ladder in the previous century but trust me - you don't want to play this competitively.

As for SC and SC2 and your wish to feel more like an art - I believe the introduction of replays back in the days played a huge role. It helped greatly in detecting hackers as well... Remember how 15-20 years ago when we saw an FPVod of some progamer everyone who was able to download it was going crazy?

Right now we got video streaming technology. Anyone can watch their favorite progamer all day long from his/her point of view and learn from there. Who wants to get back to the stone age?

I don't think you've played a lot of SC2 in LotV, have you? BW is much more passive than SC2 is nowadays.

Fun post, but I cannot agree with anything you wrote, and I started playing BW not long after you quit, around ~2000.
