I won't be selling numbers, there will be no system for this.

Foreigners are welcome, I'll have to translate the admin response to foreign complaints later, but to TLDR "Foreigners are more than welcome if they learn Korean. 1v1 does not mean you can get by without knowing Korean, you make it hard for everybody.

oh gotta learn korean. I am absolutely for this

Korean is by far one of the easiest languages. phonetically, to pick up. It is not much of a difficulty to grasp the string of symbols, even if they are no more than that to you, that mean "cho bo" or "ur bad" or whatever.

This. Also I've played 1k+ games on Fish and can safely say that about 10-12 phrases will cover 95% of the instances that you need to speak Korean. Anybody can learn that much in a day so there's no excuse.

Also fucking lmao @ getting pissed off over Fish being a Korean language only server while posting on a website that explicitly states that English is the only language allowed on the forums.

It does not really piss me off, I never wanted to use the server. I do get that the main language is Korean and that they enforce using it when it comes to administrative things, e.g. reporting discs, hackers and whatnot. I'd be completely fine as player/user with this policy. Might be that's all to it, but for now, all I heard that the language is a must right off the bat, which I deem idiotic, as it prevents a ton of potentially positive projects, e.g. having the international community getting translators themselves. Actually playing games on a ladder does not require any fluency or understanding of Korean, so I really don't get the isolation-policy. In the past multi-language systems worked fine for servers/ladders as shown by WGT/PGT/ICCup pre 2010, for which the biggest barrier was the registration without personal data. The majority of players does not chat for ladder, or ever causes problems due to not speaking a language. You can basically exclude any user from the lobby if you think there'd be lag, especially if you see their IP. Therefore the forum comparison does lack substance, not to mention the reductio ad absurdum about the airport. Eventually it boils down to the "it's their server" argument, which also is fine. But it's also fine to have the opinion that their policy is an idiotic luxury, which is only affordable, because they have a somewhat solid player base for now.

I feel like you've addressed your own concerns here.

Bolding random sentences do not change the things I wrote. If I understood the basic messages about the Korean limitation, please do correct me.

e: don't get me wrong OP, I think your effort is nice and I don't hate it. The notion was about the server's general stance, not about you.

but it also creates additional requirements. For instance WGT had a whole translating section to handle complaints and technical support: it takes time and "staff" (albeit volunteers) to run it and I can understand why they wouldnt want to do it on Fish.

Sure, and this wasn't the main point of the complain. There's no need for them to add any English registry or support for ladder issues, if they don't want to or don't have the resources. Really, I can understand both. What I don't get is how non-Koreans would mess up the entire ladder - actual games between two persons playing the game - by simply not knowing the language. The worst part would be lag, but as said, you can still filter for IPs as player.

However, right now FISH makes any non-native do near impossible things and I find that extremely sad. For one, you have to get a phone number (which I find troubling in itself), then you have to read instructions on third party pages (not their fault, see above) and now you have to not only understand the bare minimum of a language (which is again some time investment, as there's no instruction yet), but also need to get the character set installed on your machine for a game that probably is already hard to set up on modern operating systems.

so is a Fam clan, short term for family? Meaning a lounge spot to get games between ourselves?

Restricting a server to Korean only is not the same as restricting a website to English only. One is an "obscure" language spoken by about 70 million people worldwide, the other is known as one of the official world languages spoken by at least 510 million people worldwide (http://www.vistawide.com/languages/top_30_languages.htm).

Just wanted to share my point of view about this specifically as I personally do not care about their policy to exclude people that are not willing to learn Korean. I did start learning Korean specifically so I could chat in Korean and maybe some day understand the Korean vods.

I say don't learn Korean so you don't have to understand their bullshit when they bm you.

Being good or speaking even two words of Korean is how you succeed in Fish, or you'll end up like Pauline and hated by everyone, nothing but free ladder points.

Something like this might get me back to BW, because laddering on ICCUP is such a waste of time imo. The heavy competition is on fish server and thats where we need a home for foreignahs. Nice idea also if you manage to establish a good amount of people i might join it.

Just want to let everyone know, in case they missed the other thread, that you no longer need phone verification for a ladder account on Fish.

Apparently, according to that thread, you now need 72 hours and 30 melee games (not necessarily wins) in order to ladder.

This should be a great thing for the fam and for foreigners!

This is a decent investment, now pick a name. I've added a channel name poll to the main post.

7%

FBI (Foreign Brood War Initiative, named after the Discord) (1)

4%

ESC (English StarCraft) (1)

4%

28 total votes

Your vote: Fam/Channel Name
