Dredging up an ancient case now only benefits the writer, which is why he did it. like why on earth would the victim want her name going through this shit again, only to benefit some controversy generating retard like King? relevant sometime after it happened, or with the legal proceededings, or with the book. Not relevant is damn well over a decade after. and yeah, from a journalistic point, it's shit because he creates his own narrative, injects himself into it, and can't be bothered to reach either parties for comment.

The first time it happened, the Manning's downplayed her stature as a grad assistant. That opens her up to all sorts of accusations (doing it for the money, etc.), and lowers her credibility. King's article, which goes into a lot more detail than I'd ever read before, builds her credibility so the Manning's can't simply dismiss her. The fact that she was a world class trainer and was treated that way holds a certain amount of importance, even though the action was just as wrong either way. Beyond that, I don't think King's other articles or the timing takes away from the heart of the story. The heart is a guy that's gotten a free pass his entire life, and has done some pretty shitty things with it. He's never been called on it because reporters are terrified of being blacklisted by him, but there's plenty of rumors and I'm sure more will come out. It's also compounded by the fact that Tennessee is under investigation for promoting this type of culture for decades. That her boss could call her a "cunt bumper" without being fired kind of reinforces that.

I didn't know about the last part - that is certainly enough grounds to bring it up ages later. Don't change what I feel about King, but that's def relevant to the scope of that conversation.

ESPN finally had to report on it (supposedly there was a gag order on this story before.) http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14776509/lawsuit-alleges-peyton-manning-tennessee-athletes-created-hostile-sexual-environment

Though that "black cowboy hat" makes a lot more sense than the one I was imagining.
