I agree that single calls can be extremely momentous in football, but there are so few plays like that per game and it's only very rarely that a game is well and truly decided by a ref's call.
Common sense says that it's -Baseball- every play determined by umpire -Soccer/hockey- game potentially determined by penalty kicks/shots - - -Basketball- points directly awarded -Football- no points directly awarded
And if you look at the homecourt advantage for each of these sports (which are strikingly similar across leagues), it's the exact same order.

Actually Hockey calls are pretty arbitrary just like football calls, but refs don't call judgement calls in playoffs nearly as much as in the regular season.

Yes, but in football it has the most impactful penalties. Like, that Antonio Brown play, as much as it was definitely a penalty, the Steelers called that play with the sole intention of getting that exact thing to happen. If Brown catches the ball right there, they probably don't even get to kick a field goal. There needs to be a rule about recivers ducking their heads, because that is the cause of the majority of illegal hits. Mike Tomlin calling a play risking the health of his best receiver for 15 yards? Come the fuck on, dude. Not only did Ben say after the game they were trying to run a lot of small short passes since his shoulder really hurt, but I don't see how AB was "ducking his head" on that play.

you know what calls irritate me the most? the calls that would be called early in the game but not at the end of the game.

No timeouts with under fifteen seconds left. That play is a failure unless DPI or a personal foul is called. They definitely traded AB's brain cells for a victory on that play. If not by the intention of the play call, by the execution that is the only way they get a positive result.
And AB's head was at about halfway between nipple and belly button height when he got hit, and I've seen lower. The point is that defensive players can't be expected to lower thier point of contact mid-tackle, this has been irking be since Kyle Fuller got called earlier this year and he was at belly button height.

Rams and Chargers officially moving to LA

Kinda surprised me after their committee recommended the Carson plan (Raiders/Chargers) over Inglewood (Rams with Chargers option). Poor STL

St. Louisan here, my Facebook feed is saltier than the Dead Sea right now.

if they think the head was principle point of contact on a hit you're tossed from the game, among other potentiall game-changing things. there is just less of us haha.

this is all entirely irrelevant - that hit was so obviously late in real time, and he made it a point to target hit head no less. Even if it wasn't the piece of shit who was blatantly trying to hurt people his entire career, it was an obviously late, gross, disgusting hit. He didn't even come close to his body, so you can't enough cough it to something insane like 'player clearly about to get drilled in the face bracing for impact'

That presents its own problems. Refs swallowing their whistles in the postseason leads to Steelers-Bengals type games.

yeah there has been plenty of dumb things in the post season due to that.

Hue Jackson (Bengals OC) will be the next Browns head coach
Ben McAdoo (Giants OC) will be the next Giants head coach
|
I'm pleased that they gave McAdoo the job, Eli really seemed to click with that offense and I hope it continues to improve. Hopefully we can do something about the defense in the off-season and we'll be back on track.

actually I might prefer that to Shanny's brand of bullshit that hasn't worked in ages

Let's face it: no one who is available and interested is superstar coach material. That ship sailed when the Niners gave Harbaugh the boot. What the Niners need first and foremost is a coach who can rebuild the credibility and respectability of the organization. Shanahan is more than equipped to do that.

that probably is true. Like at the very least get him and keep him for at least 3 years people won't see the SF area zipcode and hang up.

Chip Kelly can probably do the job as well. I'd say that the material difference is that Chip has both a higher up side and lower down side than Shanahan. With the Niners rumored to be choosing between those two, I'm okay with how things are going.
