Signing a competent backup QB. I think you are being slightly hyperbolic - the trade for Davies was pretty good as well. The way he has managed the cap even when acquiring FAs - sure those FAs have panned out with very different levels of success, but still. I think the decision to keep both was just as much a case of there not being any really good alternatives. I mean, who would you hire instead who would be an upgrade and actually come? Don't get me wrong, I'm less than thrilled. EDIT: Though I'm actually fairly satisfied they kept Pagano (again, no clearly better options) - I think the issue has been Grigson and watching the presser it seems like Grigson has been put in his place.

I'd rather a bunch of dumb gifs out of a 3 win season vs no gifs and another shit season Extending Pagano isn't totally outlandish to me. I think he's a solidly average coach, and I don't really think there's anyone worthwhile that is free or will be free soon. Retaining their GM is inexcusable. Agree 100% with the assessment of his career highlight being: drafted the consensus #1 pick. But then again, I feel all but like maybe 3-4 years when Manning was there, the Colts had the same problem: management had no fucking clue how to provide a balanced supporting cast to a generational talent. And really since he's coming up on a contract, they pissed away their best $ window there.

Seriously, I really don't want to defend the guy, but he has done "okay". He did after all take over a franchise that only kept 3!!!!!!! players. Last year (third year after a complete rebuild) Colts were in the AFCCG, this year was the year they should have broken that barrier, but a plague of injuries (Luck wasn't even close to being the only important piece going down) brought all that crashing down. That the Colts didn't notice the season started until week 4 is hardly because of Grigson (but more likely due to terrible offensive coaching - evidenced by the coordinator getting fired). The O-line, before injuries destroyed it, held JJ Watt to 0 sacks and 2? hurries. This year was a perfect storm of injuries (all CBs -> half the o-line -> Luck -> Everyone else). If anything you should be grinding your axe towards the strength and conditioning program which appears to be absolute shit (and has apparently historically been so). I'm really not high on Grigson either, but fair should be fair.

Meh drafting: Bjorn Werner and the rest of the 2013 draft turned into basically nothing. 2014 netted you Moncreif, who is ok, but drafting WRs with an elite QB is silly anyways (every year Brady has won a title the defense was actually the better unit). 2015 its still to early for me to say, but I am not a huge fan. Weir FA moves, for instance: Frank Gore, Andre Johnson: Signed to a team with a 4th year QB. Even if they played up to last years level, still an idiotic move. Honestly, I just think the Colts strategy since getting Luck was idiotic. They seemed to constantly mortgaging the future to try and build an instant contender around Luck using veteran free agents. Oh, and he let Bruce Arians go.

Oh, and he let Bruce Arians go. Letting BA go was obviously incredibly moronic. However, he has not been mortgaging the future. If you take a look at how he has structured all those FA contracts you'll notice they can all be cut without any real cap space impact. In fact, that is probably his strongest trait - having build what was before the season and all the injuries considered by many to be a SB contender after such a housecleaning. There is plenty to criticize him for, but mortgaging the future is dead wrong. But let's move on - I really dislike defending him, I think he's meh'ish and would certainly want better. I'm just not sure who would be better.

Grigson has made plenty of dumb moves. Trich, drafting a clone of your best WR in the first round when you have needed to fix the O-line since Luck got there, signing a bunch of old past their prime dudes in FA. I mean look at the Colts roster and tell me what good moves Grigson has made?
