I remember from high school that one of our opponents had that play in their playbook (the Redskins version) and we practiced to stop it, but never saw it in action. Except they would throw the ball across to a receiver behind the offensive line and then the whole mess of players off to the side would rush forward like a screen pass. That one has some potential.
The Colts one was horrendous. You need to use a long-snap (longer than shotgun) to give your QB enough time to get the ball and throw it across. You can't line up under center. That's just stupid. And throwing the ball in front of your offensive line like the Redskins seems pretty stupid too.
When executed properly, the play is really just a very odd screen pass where the defense might not send enough guys out wide to cover it.

At least the Redskins' one had an attempted pass. The Colts guy just went into a fetal position at the snap.

That fail 4th down is still the highlight of the night. Hahaha

So I'm glad the pats didn't move any of those extra linemen they had... Nothing like an early season bye to give you a sense of impending doom. Am I the only one that thinks it's worth adding an extra bye or a week where no teams play?
|
You either extend the season or cut it short. That won't do since the teams have to play each other in their conferences. I think they should do it like the MLB and bring players up from lower leagues as needed.

I've actually been saying for a while that they should just make it an 18 week season with 2 bye weeks instead of adding an extra game to the schedule.
Teams get to rest. Everyone outside of the game get an extra week of content.

skins one is worse, since they actually thought that shit would work. this was some stupid shit to bait a jump and they fucking snapped it lol

the most ridiculous part of that play is that they waited for patriots to get set and stop looking confused to snap it. isn't the whole point of something like that to mess with the defenses assignments? not wait for them to figure out what they are before snapping it?
|
If they had lined up properly, that would have worked. It felt like even they had no idea what they were supposed to be doing.

That could've sent the game to overtime in a parallel world in which they punted on a certain fourth down.
|
Or not attempt an onside kick...
|
The onside kick was fine - they even recovered it (Kline very clearly never had possession). That was one of the calls the refs got wrong (the TY TD was another - it really looks like he did not have that secured).
|
The onsite kick call was iffy, but they can't really over turn the call on review because you can't assume he had no possession when he is on top of it.
|
They should have just played their standard game. Giving Brady and the Patriots a short field? You just don't do that. That's all I'm saying.
|
Without video we are not going to get any wiser, but I thought the ball was quite clearly coming out next to Kline - my gripe was calling it a Pats ball as early as they did as it seemed very premature, but it is what it is and no discussion is going to change it.
What I do think is worthy of discussion is the playcall and I actually really liked the aggressiveness of the onside kick - the Colts are now, I believe, 3 for 4 in the past 2 years on non-desperation onside kicks. I do agree with you ZerOCoolSC2 - the Colts put together a good enough effort yesterday that they could simply have played it standard and in hindsight that would probably have been better. But that is also precisely why the onside kick had so much potential.
EDIT: A parallel would be the Saints vs Colts SB where Saints starts the 2.nd half with an onside kick which they recover successfully. If they do not they give Manning a short field which back then was equally, if not more, dangerous as giving the current Pats a short field. The Saints succeeded and thus the play was praised.
