surprised that Doug Murray is that bad. I mean, not shocked, but still mildly surprised. Its not like he is an out and out fighter.
You see Niemie, you see how Stalock keeps it under 2 GAA? Its simple!
murray is just slow as shit and not a good puck mover. when you like to go for hits a lot, that is a recipe for disaster.
this dumb shit happened earlier. it was in retaliation to a clean hit on orlov before. i hope this gets 5+ easy. boarding should always be more than a hit that clips the head imo since it is so preventable. doing it intentionally, leaping to hurt someone, that shit should be a big one.
sedin also killed. was going into the boards and the sens player went to ride him in, he slid and did a split into the boards and was grabbing high up on his hammy
you dont employ Dog Murray for his puck moving skillz. He will give you an honest 14-16 mins of icetime a game, clearing the front of the net, blocking shots and eating time on the pk. He is decent in the limited role he can play, if that makes any sense. A team needs that kind of depth in the playoffs. He can also drop the mits.
that Orlov hit is disgusting, hope Schenn is okay.
dog is really awful. mtl moving diaz and keeping him was hilarious. diaz is superior in pretty much every way. better skater, wayyyy better puck mover, which is one of the more overlooked aspects of defense so you dont get hemmed in your own zone, smarter player... his only downfall (in the eyes of therrien at least) was that he wasnt physical
then again, therrien is a shit coach who is coaching the habs in a way that is entirely the opposite of the type of personnel they have. their forwards arent built to dump and chase all game, dump and chasing in every fucking instance is retarded, it creates undue pressure on price, etc etc.

disgusting hit. Needs to be 5-10 games minimum. Leaping into a guys numbers along the board.
What happened to D. Sedin? It looked like it could be anything from a pulled hamstring to a torn knee. And now that the Canucks season may or may not be looking even grimmer, who are they going to move? Or is Mike Gillis going to think himself into a box again.

Diaz is soft. Hes a liability in his own zone and MTL already had players that posessed all the skills Diaz had and then some. An NHL roster doesnt need 6 puck moving/ offensive defensemen. You dont want to have a guy like Diaz on your 3rd pair. If Diaz cant boost your pp, you basically dont need him on your team. I also think they got rid of him because he was on the last year of his contract.
Comparing Diaz and Murray is like comparing apples to oranges. Mtl already has much nicer apples and needs oranges because you cant win without them oranges, even if they dont taste as sweet.
he really wasn't a liability. He was alright in his own end, and he didn't have the issues of getting beat to pucks and being unable to make good outlet passes that Murray had. Murray is really awful. Like, should barely be 7th dman on playoff teams awful. But yeah, Therrien is awful. HE IS NOT SOFF
in other news, I just heard on the rangers intermission that Orlov is only getting a phone call for that hit, so less than five. Basically, fuck everything if that's less than five

i read that article and agree with it as well. re diaz 'soft' and all that neat analysis of scoring chances by location in regards to diaz vs murrey. looking forward to more of that stuff emerge as more computarization is involved in hockey.

nhl is never going to stop reckless play if they dont lay down consistent rules.
i just dont get how boarding is not punished more. if you do it so bad you got a major, you were either grossly negligent in a way unlike any other hit, or either intentionally trying to light someone up
he Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly ponying up in their efforts to lure Ryan Kesler out of Vancouver.
Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported a proposed deal between the Pens and Canucks that he credited to multiple sources.
“A proposed deal would send Kesler to the Penguins in exchange for Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks — likely a first- and third-round — and the Canucks' choice of defensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin,” Rossi wrote on Saturday.
That would be interesting with Kesler on that 3rd line playing his natural role, defensive center. Still, seems a lot to give up for a guy whose body is going to continue to get wrecked -- although in the slower, softer East he might last a lot longer.
getting a player like him and jamming him on the third seems like a massive waste of talent, esp to give up potentially good defensive prospects and a late 1st.
imo, pitt would be better served by getting sutter some non-shit wingers to round out the bottom six. granted, his possession numbers have never been good, but theyve totally fucking cratered playing along scrubs

I am not so sure if its a waste of talent or not. Kesler could play the same role as Bolland did for Chicago when they won the Cup, just make the top center of the other team completely irrelevant and he can go in what Canuck fans imagine is 'beast mode' to throw in some extra goals because the top defensive pairings/centers of the other team are covering Sidney or Malkin's line.. But it is a hell of a lot to give up for an injury prone, 50-60 points a game guy predisposed to diving.

I guess you could always give him all the PP and pK minutes too, but meh.
Plus Brandon Sutter is already a great 3rd line center. The best reason for Pittsburgh to pursue Kesler is if he can play goal.
On another topic, why do people think having a lot of puck-moving defensemen is bad? Doesn't matter how good a guy is in his own zone, if he can't get the puck out to the forwards then it's a recipe for (eventual) disaster. All the great defensemen, even those considered stay-at-home-types can move the puck when needed. Shit, look at Canada in the Olympics - every time the puck came into their zone it was one-and-out and instantly back up ice. Incredible to watch.
edit: How can anyone not love Jonathan Toews?
He's like the Canadian version of Pavel Datsyuk. Incredibly responsible, reliable player who will burn you completely if given even half a chance.
I always liked Sutter, but apparently his possession numbers are total shit. This year, he's playing with total shit players, so that is understandable, but he was playing with Kennedy and Cooke before that, who are pretty good 3rd liners. 43.5 ozs isnt terrible, but still.
pitt would benefit much more from a good bottom six player, and a good top 4 dman. or fleury not turning to total dogshit again, but that's asking a lot.

Pens will never trade for a goalie, it would be admitting that Fluery is a weak minded joke and that all those years in the playoffs, if they had acted they could have gone deeper.
