edition.cnn.com/2013/02/05/world/americas/mexico-tourists-raped/?hpt=hp_t2

A pack of masked and hooded gunmen broke into a beach bungalow on the outskirts of Acapulco and raped six women tourists after tying up a group of men with cell phone cables and bikini straps, officials said Tuesday.

The victims -- Spanish nationals, ranging in age from 20 to 34 -- are now under the protection of Mexican authorities.

Acapulco Mayor Luis Walton condemned the attack during a Tuesday news conference and vowed to apprehend those responsible as world attention homed in on Pacific port city.

"It's a very delicate situation," he said. "We are going to have the full weight of the law against those responsible."

Image problem notwithstanding, Mexico has remained a top tourist destination for decades. It welcomed 20 million Americans in 2010, the latest year for which federal data is available.

This is sad and reprehensible. Rape alone is bad, but gang rape. Are there no security forces in the area? Doesn't the hotel resort have security measures against this? Moreover, I think the officials are more concerned in keeping the reputation of the place as a tourist destination that in actually finding the rapists and establishing measures to stop incidents like this. Good thing that they did not reveal the names of the victims.

Somehow my mind still read it as "tourists" and didn't think anything of it. :\

I'd still like to know what exactly people say to eachother before they decide to gangrape someone. Thats a conversation I couldn't begin to fathom.

Well, that's what happens when criminal organizations get so much power and money. The rule of law crumbles and crime of all sorts starts to rise. The police is probably too busy/corrupt/scared to deal with crime and this is what happens.

this makes no sense. of course they are going to want to show their tourist destination is safe, especially after news like this spreads.

as for the rapes, that blows. not sure you will get any different opinion from anyone.

it sounds like there was alot of people (enough to be considered a pack at least) so i doubt the hotel (or any hotel) has enough security to handle a large group of armed criminals

Mexico ranks pretty high lately on the "dumbest places to vacation" list. It's always been a dangerous place, but it's only getting worse.

We need a Mexican Batman to be the hero that Mexico deserves and needs right now.

This is horrible. I won't be going to Mexico anytime soon.

In all honesty, why does anyone bother going to Mexico anymore? I know it has beautiful vacation spots but it's almost common knowledge that the entire country is run by criminals. Why risk safety for beautiful?

Meh, sometimes my family has to go over there for important shit, but they have reluctance and whatnot. =/. There are a few people I know from there who tell me that, if you know what you're doing, it's a pretty safe place. :S

They prolly didn't talk much at all, they probably just said to each other a few hours before "let's do some fun tonight" then they found the buss and the things they did after that was what "fun" meant for them.

It's not like that at all....

The problems are all in the North of Mexico where the Drug Routes are being fought over by the cartels. My family and I go to Cabo San Lucas (on the little dong looking thing) every year and nothing even remotely sketchy has happened. We walk through the town at night and mingle with tourists and locals. Everyone is super nice down there except for the odd dick head tourist.

Essentially saying it's just a death trap because of what happens in a tiny region in Mexico is just ignorant.

They don't need a batman we just need to end the useless war on drugs that inflate the cartels power.

Can't believe people in this thread still think rape is about sex or being horny...

And I equally can't believe how much in the shit Mexico is right now. On the one hand it's trying to move into the first world, and on the other it can't keep law and order, its police forces are corrupt and I wouldn't be surprised if government officials were in cahoots with cartel leaders. It's mindboggling how this kind of thing is going on right under the USA and they haven't done anything about it. What happened to policing the world?

Either way, I think there should be some kind of UN resolution about Mexico, it's being torn apart.

You don't, you just join when you sees it. It's like any team game, when someone initiated, you join in without a word.

Joke aside, Mexico doesn't sound like a good place to visit.

lol at all the people saying mexico is some dangerous place based on one incident of gang rape. there was a gang rape of a teenager recently in northern california. better stay away from the United States too.

edit:

2010 wiki data:

US rapes - 89241
Mexico - 14993

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics

obviously issues with these kinds of statistics, but still.

It sucks that a country that is so beautiful, rich with culture, and some of the best food in the world can be so fuckin messed up...they need someone to stand up in Mexico and lead the people out of this hole these crazy vatos put them in. Create a team or something that actually cares about the country and take those es'es out.

It isn't just from this incident, but all that cartel violence, public execution, body hanging from bridge. It's nasty as hell.

I went to Shoppers drug mart and was given a handout to win a free vacation to mexico. I laughed and tossed it away joking about how they couldn't pay me to go there. Still true :| Mexico seems really fucked.
i was driving down the road this november eve and spotted a hitchhiker walking down the street. i pulled over and saw that it was only a tree. i uprooted it and put it in my trunk. do trees like marshmallow peeps? cause that's all i have and will have.

If you judge a whole country based on what you see in the news you might as well never travel anywhere and live with your narrow-mind in your little corner....

Mexico is definitely not the place to be right now. I remember going there a bunch when i was kid and it was so beautiful. Now i see the pictures online of what they do to each other, and i won't be back for a while.

One of the last legit businesses mexicans have is gonna go down the drain.

why would you travel to mexico with your family when you could just go to Cuba ( or like any other sunny place near the sea, just picked Cuba cause that commie island is so fucking safe for tourists) for half the price and literally 0 risk if getting mugged/shot/raped/kidnapped ( or whatever crimes cartelz do these days )

seriously fuck mexico.
i feel bad for mexicans though. vast majority of them are everyday normal guys who just want the same thing as me.

Every corner of the world get news like this, people just have selective memory...

God forbid me from visiting USA where terrorist blow up buildings and school-shooting happens all the time. You see how dumb it sounds?

I'm referring to my previous statement about cartel violence, public executions, these kind of news don't apply to every corner of the world. It's hard not to remind yourself when thinking about crime from that region.

Lmao i agree. Especially when you read comments on some of the stories. People lack sympathy... However, for me, it is my form of getting news from that region. I always heard of these mass killings, graves, drug violence in mexico and never saw it from a primary source. It's humbling to see how easy it is to die and that where i live is very peaceful in relation to.

There are much better places to visit in Brazil, like the Iguazu Falls.

Gotta love the ridiculous over the top translation of the mayor "Hey, this shit happens everywhere, don't worry about it" in a mild juvenile tone. I'm sure that is exactly the way he went about addressing it... Awesome unbiased news reporting at it's best!
