Did I just read that Trump wants to emulate all the great leaders like Stalin, Franco and Castro with huge military parades to show off the size of his pen... errr, army. Colour me surprised.

We do this shit in France every year. Usually we invite some african dictators to watch with the president. It's a national disgrace.

Yeah, and it's particularly surprising in a country that's usually so shy of showing open nationalism. I'm actually surprised huge military parades are not a common thing in the USA already.

They technically are. Not huge ones, mind you, but local Military parades happen all the time.

Doing it on a national level is the problem. The opinion has probably dissipated somewhat, but state/local militias are one of the core founding principles of the US.

I'm talking statistically, Military parades happen across the country, and its not unlikely that there probably is almost dozens of parades happening each month, if not each week, year round in the US. Even if its not national, the volume is definitely super high.

EDIT
As to minimize confusion--I love military parades and I actually think the US does not do enough for its non-combatant military staff. I wish we did more for them, especially with what responsibilities we ask of them.
Hark, what baseball through yonder window breaks?

He's extreme but can't shake things up, he took over an entire political coalition and became POTUS in 18 months, can you explain what a shakeup would look like?

Who is going to be able to own a car when they are made 100% in the US? Surely not the people making the cars.

Thank you. I can't believe so many people are acting like the world is going to end. People are screaming before they get hurt.

Too me it's very scary that the most powerful man in the world just delivered such an ultra nationalistic speech, blaming other countries for the problems, talking about making America win and unstoppable. He also basically alienated himself from all the other politicians on the balcony which makes me think he really wants to work towards absolute power for himself.

He won only because of his anti-establishment and pro-America narrative. Do you expect him to betray his campaign narrative on the first day of his mandate ? I mean I know we live in the Farage era, but still.

As for nationalism, it sounds more like isolationism to me. And, as a non-American, I'm fine with this. Maybe we'll stop creating chaos in various parts of the world for the sole sake of spreading the Glorious American Ideals of Democracy and Freedom. It might also force Europeans to unite faster to put up with the lack of US help, which I'm also fine with.

How are Libya and Mali with France spreading their Glorious French Ideals of Democracy and Freedom? I know the US has a pretty bad track record recently, but France is possibly the only country that comes close to equalling it in meddlesome interfering.

Lol at people like xDaunt praising him for trying to embarass all the politicians he is going to have to work with to get anything done. Like that is in anyway prodictive. Trump supporters railed against Obama for not working with Republicans and trying to bully them early on. This is better?

In general I am curious to see how Trump does two things. First, how he does after national tragedies. I can't imagine him giving somber speeches well like Obama. I'm curious what style he will try after mass shootings and the like. After his inane tweets of course.

I'm also curious to see how he does at things like the commencement dinner where he is supposed to be funny. His humor is very mean-spirited and I wonder if he can get away from that.

He will increase spending, lower taxes and the us will boom. 4/8 years from now he will be gone and another poor democrat like obama will clean up his mess because the trumpuan bubble bursts

Thats the most positive outlook i can imagine.

From the Model T to the F-150 we seem to have done fine with domestic autos.

Maybe that's why even I can't afford a Tesla, even if I had a drivers license.

Building stuff without cheap parts/labour from Mexico is just unfeasible.

Workers in the rust belt got fucked by globalization, true. But globalization made the economy more efficient, and bigger. The gains just went to a select number of people. While the economy got richer, we had no solution for all the obsolete workers who are mas unemployed.

And with robotization and a new AI/IT revolution, it will be worse.

What is Trump's answer? That he will magically bring all those jobs back.

For some people maybe but I would never own an American car, given the choice. What happened to Republicans favoring free markets? If he wants Americans to buy American cars made in America, we should make better cars.

I wasn't praising Trump for it so much as I was highly amused by what he did. I guarantee that Trump will do a far better job working with the opposition than Obama did.

most of their problems were always due to automization rather than globalization.

that seems unlikely, given how much work obama did to try and work with republicans, and how little trump is doing. at any rate, what will you do if your guarantee is wrong?

You can only compete at the same price if you drive wages down to those in China, Mexico, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.

If they had a job, their wages remained the same, corrected for inflation. If they lost it, they have no income.

Globalization stream-lined the economy greatly, causing big growth. But if you are jobless, you get no piece of the now bigger pie. Saying stuff in shops is cheaper isn't really that relevant.

And with Trump's trade tariffs, stuff will suddenly not be cheap anymore.

That's an evidence. His opposition isn't the Republicans.

It's great within a country, but internationally you want to be practically vested in your own citizens' interests and not philosophically obsessed with ensuring someone in Kyrgyzstan can mess up your domestic market.
