This is probably the worst result possible for moderates in the republican party. The candidate lost so they don't control the governorship but not by enough to make Tea Party feel like it was there fault.

Uhh... Cuccinelli is a tea partier even after the whole "government shutdown" thing. You know, that thing that fucked over all the government contractors that live in virginia and did unnecessary damage to the economy? Yea, we don't need more tea party crazies. Definitely not in Virginia. [Edit: Oh and don't forget all the "let's give government money to religious schools and hate gay people" part of Cuccinelli. The man is whacko. Please don't defend him]

It's true that McAuliffe is pretty awful though. Really depressing to see how close it was.

One last thing.

You are right. They will point to a blue repub in NJ as evidence that, like Mitt Romney, "only he can win!" Then the Tea Party will point out that the RNC did precious little compared to the DNC in VA. Both are legitimate points. Because it seems like they could have won it.

GOP Talking points: Had the libertarians voted for us we would have won.
Or as Drudge so succinctly explained the 'conservative' point of view on twitter: "McAuliffe, De Blasio and Christie: Triple feature in a Republican's nightmare. Hug a conservative today."

Yea, I'm actually a little sad that Sarvis didn't get more. I agreed on most of his stuff (other than his education policy which was off in loonyville).

The only anger I've heard about from the Tea Party is directed at the RNC. Or if they have blamed the libertarian, that is certainly not where they place most of the blame. I haven't heard anyone (at least big name people) blame Sarvis for the loss.

Your last quote is, however, very true. Well, replace "Republican" with "Conservative." The establishment is pretty happy with Christie, and I doubt they care about De Blasio. NYC is just that, a city. If they want that, they can have it.

Hopefully this really is the last thing for me. I have a calc exam tomorrow.

Christie is giving Conservatives a lot of ammo if he does indeed run in 2016.

Isn't CPAC the "establishment"?

Remember, one man -- Cuccinelli -- spoke at this year’s CPAC conference, while another man -- Christie -- wasn’t invited. As CPAC’s chief organizer said of Christie’s snub, "This year, for better or for worse, we felt like, ah, like he didn't deserve to be on the all-star selection.”

The Tea Party just keeps reiterating that they're doing what the people want despite the fact that the people hate them. The Tea Party will never feel like it was their fault. Ever. All their rhetoric is populism that isn't actually popular.

You say NYC is just a city but its more populated then a large majority of states in this country (think not counting NY state then only 10 states are bigger maybe 11).

I wonder if Christie is playing the long game as in he knows he wont win 2016 primary but once they get killed in the general he can win the primary in 2020 when they all learn there lesson and then win general then.

"Let them have the city." will go on to summarize the next few years of elections nicely methinks.

Not sure why but this DeBlasio speech has some elements of a historic speech in American politics.

I will openly admit I have no idea what that means.
