That post by cowboy is a prime example of why americans get ridiculed around the world: tons of useless, unfounded, scared bullshit.

But she should be thankful that she gets to live in the White House and not be conflicted about its history. And she should never express that conflict out loud and remind people about our history. Pearls will be clutched in horror at the concept that a huge part of our history revolves around slavery and kidnapping people from their homes.

I really, really do not understand the whole hoopla about her talking about slaves built the White House. I only learned a couple months ago (or perhaps I knew and had forgotten) that she was directly descended from slaves (and a slave/slave master union at that.) I thought it was a neat 'how far we come' in five generations then and I still think it now.

The hoopla is because a lot of people in this country would like to sweep under the rug the uglier parts of US History (slavery, exploitation of Native Americans, etc.), and don't appreciate it when such things are brought to the forefront. Nobody enjoys having a guilty conscience.

Hence why you have Bill O'Reilly saying the slaves who built the White House were "well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government". That statement helps assuage any feelings of guilt. Nevermind that it isn't true.

Why would I feel guilty over something I didn't do?

For people who are part of the religious right's cultural bubble (which I grew up in), it's because that ugly history undermines their identity.

The inherent problem for the religious right is that their denominations and/or predecessors were pro-slavery up until that battle was long lost. It's a cultural error that has, over the intervening decades, been very carefully and studiously swept under the rug. It had to be, because a cornerstone of that culture is the belief that Christianity is guided by God, and a moral error of that scale undermines that belief and their very identity.

As such, downplaying the severity of slavery and the role the church had in condoning or even promoting slavery is basically rote. It's a defense mechanism, because accepting the error opens a crack in their cultural foundation.

Yeah but I find it amazing that someone wouldnt even question their values for atleast a minute, when they find that the choices they are making align with said dumpster fire... Atleast David Duke for the most part keeps himself out of the way.

It's 100% not fair, but Hillary can't stay in the public eye or she's going to come off as nagging America to break up with their no good boyfriend.

You're all a bit hard on Cowboy, there was some truth in his arguments/feelings. It is true that politicians nowadays gain a lot from their "public services". All in all, production is a collective endeavour and, as a pretty good american president used to say, "There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own — nobody." - I believe this to be absolutly right.
The problem is that Cowboy didn't understood what Michelle Obama was actually saying : she was trying to acknowledge the improvement that the US made to a point that even a black woman is able to live in the white house. She was celebrating the US, not whining.

Yes, there are benefits to being a public servant. But the majority of the people who obtain those offices could make as much, if not more money doing anything else. If their sole purpose was to obtain wealth, they would have no problem getting a highly paid position and packing away the money. This includes the first family. Telling them to be grateful for the positions we hired them for is dumb argument.

You saw O'Reilly had to immediately talk about how good the slaves were treated. Sit down O'Reilly. Black people built this country as much as anyone else, they just didn't get paid or enjoy constitutional protections (still don't enjoy constitutional protections fully).

But we treated those slaves nice back then, like we treat our dogs now. We love our dogs, is that wrong? Why would it be wrong to love something you own and care for? Why are you judging dog owners?

I disagree, in fact Obama thanked the democrats in his speech exactly because they elected him. They gain a pretty good income, more than that they gain power, privilege and recognition.

Barring exceptions like Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter (who both look like corpses these days, I should add), it definitely seems like presidents end up paying for their time in the big seat, crazy earning potential notwithstanding.

Interesting chart from the Economist:

By this metric, Mr. Trump delivered the most negative speech in recent memory, warning that America was "at a moment of crisis".

I want to point out that even FDR didn’t double down on the fear after Pearl Harbor. That speech was all about how much “we got this” and far more positive that Trumps word vomit.

It seems like it should be obvious that when peoples' lives are shit, they don't want to hear someone tell them how shit their lives are.

That said, "positive"/"negative" doesn't realistically paint the whole picture, since there's positive in the sense of "don't worry, it'll get better", and positive in the sense of "I'm going to pretend everything's fine".

Wolf is saying the FBI is investigating what could be a hack into Hillary's campaign. If that comes out it should be quite interesting.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has announced criminal charges against six more people — including the state's former water quality chief in connection with lead-contaminated water in the city of Flint.

All six people are current or former state employees in the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services or the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

A total of nine people are facing charges, accused of causing or covering up the crisis. The state has also filed a civil suit against two companies that allegedly knew about the poisoned water and failed to act.
