The 12 to 14 year olds and people with that level of maturity that watch his stream lap it up. Comparing Destiny and Orb directly is not relevant, one as a caster, is chosen to represent the community and has to show a degree of professionalism. If any caster used one of these racist terms it would have large detrimental effect on their careers. Destiny, although part of a team, essentially works for himself and seems unlikely to change his ways anytime soon.

It just forces people to come up with another term though. You can also take the matter to your own hands and block all communications at the start of the match. Anything but mobs. as Type|Naruto said earlier in the thread, TL can do something about it, though. They could take a stand and defeature him. Obviously they have not chosen to go this route now or in the past (with incidents like -orb-). Perhaps it's a precedent of policing conduct that they do not want to go down. However by choosing to feature his stream on their site they making a statement that they approve enough of his behavior to suggest many others follow his stream. It's an interesting argument, but TL featuring is a very important part of keeping stream viewer counts high. TL could make a stand to improve the level of discourse in SC2 and it definitely has the power to do so. It already does it through incredibly strict site moderation. It could do it with the players as well through the use of it's featuring system.

I've never really cared for destiny anyway. Always felt he was overrated and tried way to hard to be cool. Only time he ever played well was after fungal got a huge buff. Once it got nerfed he crawled back under his rock of failure and poor sportsmanship. The only way he can get people to view his starcraft stream is by using racial slurs and shock value, that's really pathetic. He will fade away once he runs out of 10 year olds to entertain with dirty language. (because unlike him, most will actually mature mentally at some point)

However, in a public sphere a professional sports player cannot say racial slurs or call people 'fucking faggots'. If they did and when they have, there has been major controversy. They can't? Look at the NBA last year. People in the gay community had complained about the leagues history of acceptance of homosexual slurs, so the league launched an expensive advertising campaign to save face. It was then capped off by players like Kobe Bryant and Joakim Noah not caring and continuing to use such slurs. Noah even said "fucking faggot" himself. Except no one cares to continue to remember these instances.

I don't understand how my sentences were twisted like that. Which valid point did he raise exactly? Destiny was being a dick, which - if it bothers you enough - you sort out by reporting him to TL/Twitch, ie the people that he streams through and promote his stream and who will probably not approve of such content being featured on their respective websites/services (if they decide it goes against their policy). There is no point to be made here.

On May 01 2012 23:05 Silvertine wrote: Sorry but you don't get to redefine words. You can't call a group of black people 'niggers' and then say "Oh, to me it just means 'gentlemen'." When you use a racial epithet towards someone, especially when its the exact slur that pertains to that persons race, it is racist. It doesn't matter whether you intended for it to be racist or not. That's like calling a woman 'cunt' and when she gets angry saying "I meant it as a compliment"! Some women might take it as a compliment, in certain rare circumstances. And some black people do use that word to mean "gentlemen" and accept it as such. Anyway, my point is that it's your choice whether to be deeply offended, or to realize that the words come from an immature person who is a fountain of curse words. It really does matter who the source of the words is. If a small child or a person who deserves no respect called you stupid, you would think nothing of it. It is the opinion of someone who does not matter, and what's more- it may not even be their actual opinion, it's more likely they were just spewing negativity in order to vent. But if your father, or your boss at work, or some highly respected colleague says "you really screwed this up, I can't believe how stupid you were" then it would affect you deeply. What you need to realize is that Destiny belongs in the first category and not the second.

Its easier to say what you feel when there is no direct consequence. we learn and evolve its gonna take some time. But pingpong fans would like to see a good pingpong game and not some jackass spout out racial slurs and call it personality. Actually this brings me back to what Tyler said... guess he WAS right. People just like drama, hence why some1 like destiny is a very popular streamer over the many high quality sc2/rts players that stream at the same time.

What two players say in privacy when no one can hear, no one can do anything about. But if a fan or the league mics that player up and catches the slur, then that's a controversy. It would be an issue if a player in any major sports league in America (NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, etc) used a slur like that. There have been incidents like it in the past. (See: John Rocker)

Destiny, although part of a team, essentially works for himself and seems unlikely to change his ways anytime soon. Intention is what really matters to the user of the racial slur. Of course using the N-word is not acceptable in society. Asians, spanish, white people do use that word as some kind of gangsta/kool kind of pride term. Like, "what's up NIgga?" to their asian, white, or spanish friends. I don't think it's very respectful and mature to utlize a word like nigga but the intention was not to diminish or slander a entire race of people. On the other hand, people who call a black person a "Ni$$er" in their face is then openly being hostile and commiting an act of hate against a person of another race. I say that SC2, professional players should never use openly hostile words that is intentionally targeting a race or ethnicity of a person. That Sh$T is unacceptable in SC2
