I swear I'm not being a spoil brat here honest - I know you can't expect everything from streaming media but damnit if HQ VOD is still such a mess? Hell I'm in Australia where bandwidth is a premium and I'd still be willing to throw away more data for some better quality. If I watch HQ Twitch TV or MLG it's just vastly superior (for free) I'm even fine with the live HQ being lower quality but the VODs should be much better, it's back to a flash player at that point and they can post compile as long as they like.
Has this ever been raised with GOM or any comments on it? :/
EDIT: Proof is in the links.
Husky 720p flash youtube http://i.imgur.com/fSL1S.jpg Look how crisp the text is? Note the defined lines on the protoss buildings.
Gom "HQ" http://i.imgur.com/A0U9Y.jpg Crystals hard to see unique angles, probes at the unit counter top left just a mass of pixels, text readable but not half as crisp as Huskys 720p (and most 720p online)

Have you seen 720p TwitchTV / MLG? It just utterly blows it away. It's not unwatchable at GOM but it's just so shabby in comparison to other free services. Are they trying to conserve bandwidth?
pretty much why I dont watch GSL nor subscribe, both NQ and HQ streams (and the vods) are probably the worst quality compared to every other major tournament. Kinda sad considering they represent the highest level of play.
it is strange.. when gom began broadcasting they felt top of the line, now everyone has caught up and surpassed them both in production value and video quality.. instead of doing stuff like off the record and other stuff, just give us decent quality vods!

It's a tradition, did you ever watched a BW restream, it adds a vintage/cool sensation.

It's 2012, how cheap is a beast PC to re-compile with some slick as hell codec for sweet quality? Honestly don't they get the VOD's up a couple of hours later? Make it longer, I don't care how just up the quality.
the quality is fine, i dont know why people are so picky. sure it doesnt look like hd own3d or twitch but its the gameplay im looking at not the graphics lol.
http://i.imgur.com/A0U9Y.jpg Look at the minerals, they are a blurry mess. The supply / income numbers - while readable (unlike LQ) are quite blurry - the top left units counter, the probes are just a gold mass of pixels.
the quality isn't the best but you have to remember, isn't australia capped on it's bandwidth? perhaps that's causing less quality, or maybe I just can't tell you since we are on different computers and different brains and to me its watchable.

I really don't think I'm being that picky, this is the "HQ" stream and right now you can watch grubbys 720p+ stream and it's vastly more crisp. The worst part is this is a VOD - I don't have time to catch the live stuff, a post processed image should be able to be cleaned up from the highest source, much better long term compression etc. It's longer dependant on the proprietary GOM codec, they drop the VODs to flash and could comfortably increase the quality. It's just a blurry compressed mass. I'm almost positive they could do a better quality image, without even using more bandwidth.

I agree, I don't know what anyone in this thread is talking about. The HQ VODS look great on my end, not sure what the meaning behind others issues is.
And I went back to check a few VODS, the Bel-shir beach game seems to be greatly lower quality than the games following it, so maybe it's just that specific game.

You can't be serious.
There, Husky on a single computer is capturing 720p and look at the quality? Switch to 720p mode - look at the text, look at the units, same ultimate codec (Flash Video) in the long run, vastly vastly better quality.
i think they could increase the bitrate of their HQ stream and vods a bit. i'm sure it will happen sooner or later. GOM has been pretty good with making improvements to their vods/streams. the ingame footage is pretty good, but you really notice the compression artifacting in the shots of the studio with all the different lights and colours. when i had a shitty connection a while back, i could only keep up with buffering vods if there wasn't studio shots.
It is pretty bad. I have to change my video settings just to sharpen it up. I'm use to it because GSL is the only reason I watch sc2 matches so I've become accustomed to the quality. However, I have seen other streams that are much better. Considering the production Gom puts into it's stream, I don't know why it can't be higher.

I'm not sure what the deal is, but HQ looks way better than that for me. Maybe it's something on your end?

Mine always looked like that and I've pretty mutch watched every season. Fine for me since I don't watch fullscreen anyways.
uh yeah they also look really good for me, definitely MUCH better than that pic. i don't really notice a difference between GSL vods and MLG vods tbh. except the games, production, casting and everything else is better in GSL.

I think it's unlikely that they litterally encode a different version just for other countries. There's 2 options, high and low. Here is what a LQ snap looks like http://i.imgur.com/zIW0I.jpg
What we see here is a videophile having a shit fit, I've seen this before all we need to do, is to show super high resolution images and it will calm it,
I can't really tell, but I wonder if the computers of the GSL cameraman are not as good as other tourneys such that graphical settings are turned down?
Keep in mind GOM likely has a number of analogue conversions or other sources of degradation in their pipeline since they are a broadcast studio and have to capture live camera footage and do a lot of video mixing etc. You can't really compare that to someone screen capturing at full color space RGB24 and directly encoding to x264. The analogue path likely has low color space, possible interlacing issues, limited HD/SD resolution, etc.

Multiple computers, I've been watching since GSL#1 - I've re-installed Windows since then. This is on my laptop and desktop. Considering this is what husky 720p looks like on the same computer? Same flash player?

EDIT: Watching the GOM stream compared to the Husky stream, they are definitely using vastly different codecs, GOM has very very smooth unit movement, whereas huskys stream blurs significantly more when units move but you only notice at very fast moment and personally I find it less likely to notice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=5-YcDzmE4-c#t=681s

Yup. GOM HD is more like medium definition. It's pretty shameful. I don't mind when the camera shows the casters or the players, but for the games at least it should be as clear as other tournaments.

I opened up the VOD and went to the specific time and my quality is much higher than the first screenshot posted.
Screenshot please, paused at the same location blown up on the highest res monitor you have.
I was about to do this, then I maximized to 1920x1080 and it was pretty close to the ss, so I guess you're right. I didn't have it on fullscreen when I looked. I still don't think its even worth complaining about but to each their own.
I'll also add that Bel'shir winter seems to make everything look slightly worse for some reason. I went to Entombed Valley and the minerals were much clearer.

For this post and for anybody else that has the same thoughts.
GOM is not HD. They never claimed HD. They claim HQ, high quality. They give you the resolution (or used to give the resolution) on their ticket pages.
