Hi fellow terrans and other people.
Lately i've been doing everything i can think of to improve as much as possible, (still 3250 diamond -.-) and now i thought it was time to take a look at my hotkeys, because i'm starting to wonder if they actually arent the most optimal.
So let's get to it. Here's my current hotkey-setup:
½* - Special units (still trying to incorporate it into my play). 1 - Main army . 2 - 2nd army or special units. 3 - 3rd army or more special units. 4 - Barracks, Factories and Starports. 5 - Command Centres 6 - Upgrade facilities (Engineering bay/armory)
*The function of this button varies from where you live. I t's the one left to the "1" key.
I was wondering if there's a more optimal setup out there. My main concern is if it's better to have production facilities on multiple hotkeys instead of all on one.
So basicly what im asking for is if you terrans out there could tell me what hotkey-setup you use or what you think would be optimal and why. Also i'm looking for comments on the production facilities on one button-issue.
Sorry if this has been discussed before, couldnt find anything by searching.
Thanks!
Edit: And please don't post comments like "it depends on what you prefer/are used to." Well, if one setup is more useful than the other, i'll get used to that one.

It never occoured to me you could use ½ as an army hotkey :b Thanks! Besides that, I use almos the same setup of hotkeys, except I've put Barracks, Factories and Starports on individual hotkeys, 3 - Barracks, 4 - Factories, 5 - Command Center, 6 - Starports. Besides that I have drops and scouts on 9 and 0. If you only play Terran I could advice using keys such as Q, W and G to bind to locations, for example I use W to quickly look at the Watch towers, Q for my SCV building supply depots, and G for whatever is necessary.
I don't believe there is any right way of using hotkeys, I think it all comes down to how you use them, and what you're comfortable with, but improvements can always be made :D

Putting production facilities on one key as opposed to three separate is a personal preference. It's not necessarily any more difficult or requires any more button presses to tab cycle through facilities and produce from all of them. It's a matter of personal preference.
Play twenty games with production facilities on different hotkeys until you decide if you like it more or not. The upside is that until you have more than one of each on a hotkey, you can analyze the building progress bar, helping you time your production cycles better and reducing the amount of minerals you have tied up in unit queueing or idle facilities. This is a negligible advantage since most players don't have only one barracks, one factory or one starport for a very long period of time.

What about, binding CC's to Q, army 1-4, and rax/fact/port to 5/6/7? When i off-raced terran it was kinda good.
|
Whatever's comfortable is seriously best, but you really do want to have your tanks, vikings and infantry on separate hotkeys for TvT, and a comfortable drop-hotkey is a godsend too.
|
1 barracks 2 factories 3 starporst 4 command centres 5-8 army 9-0 uprages or something useless
this is what i found most comfort.
|
1-3 units, changes throughout the game but I almost never just have 1 army hotkey 4 barracks 5 ocs 6 factories 7 starports
|
How do you bind location?
|
Does anyone else use Spacebar for team hotkeys? I play Random and use Spacebar for Command Centers/Nexus/Hatcheries. What do other players use Spacebar for? I find it convenient since my thumb is always there and not doing anything else.
|
I use 1 for army 2 for army 3 for army 4 for CC's and PF's
F1 Barracks (Idle workers at ^ ) F2 Factories F3 Starports
Im not a very good player but it works very good with optimized Grid setup for me (Move Command T and Attack move Q)
|
1 - Command Centers 2 - Army 3 - Army 4 - All Production Buildings 5 - All Upgrade Buildings 6 - Army (if needed) & Dropships 7 - Army (if needed) & Dropships 8 through 0 - Almost Never Used
Only change I've made since I started playing during beta was I used to have barracks on one hot key, factory on another and starport on another. While switching them to 1 hot key took time to get used to I think that it is worlds easier now, same concept with all upgrade buildings being on one hot key. All comes down to personal preference though.

My hotkeys are exactly the same as yours OP
I have still found no use for mouse3, the alert system in SC2 sucks ass, when I get attacked and press spacebar in response (BW habit) it never brings me where it pings on the map, but brings the camera to the latest produced unit which is completely useless and messes up my reactions.
You basically HAVE to press the alert boxes on the middle-left screen which isn't practical at all as you might as well click the minimap, I hope they get a grip and clean up the alert system to actually make pressing space helpful.

3.7k master t here, i do it like this: 1-3 armies (changing all game, depending on what i have and on what i want to do next) 4 cc's 5 rax's 6 fac's 7 starports 8 ebay/armory sometimes, sometimes too lazy
in late late game i sometimes change cc to 0 and make 4 army too, depends on game and on my mood.
playing standard hotkeys and will never change them ^^

If you go to the Hotkeys menu in SC2, you can find settings for this in the universal settings, under camera I believe.
The default is Ctrl+f5-8, but I have mine set to ctrl+f2-5. Ctrl+F key will set the location, and pressing the F key will bring you to that location on the map.
As for a response to the OP, I have my hotkeys set up as
1-3 Armies 4- CC 5- Rax 6- Factories 7- Starport 8-0 Anything like tech labs or ebays.
This seems to work pretty well for me, although I don't enjoy reaching past the 7 and 8 keys, so I try not to assign anything past that.

I tend to have all the terran production buildings all together on one number just to make rally points a bit easier, but also split them as well, when I want to separately build non barracks units. The obvious thing to note is that barracks will take priority over factories and starports if they're in the same group. So my keys look something like: 1, 2- units 3- all CC's 4- barracks, factories, starports for the sake of one rally point 5- factories 6- starports 7- main base 8- expansion 9- expansion 0- expansion

1 - MM ball/ hellions&thors If i'm Meching 2 - Tanks (early game I use it as my scouting scv) 3 - Vikings 4 - CC 5 - Rax 6 - Fact 7 - Starport 8 - Ghosts (when used) 9 - Engi bay/armory 0 - drops and other misc stuff

I personally use it as a location hotkey (ctrl+space to create), although thats also one of the things i try to work on using more.
Edit: Thanks for the response guys, really great having some inspiration to work with!

1 main army 2 tanks if i have tanks if not medivacs/banshees 3 special units (ghosts/ravens/vikings) 4 factory/starports 5 barracks (unless i go mech play than i group all under 5) 6 orbitals
I use a split keyboard so hotkeys behind 6 are a stretch for me, if it gets to late game I do hotkey my upgrade buildings as 7.
|
i use 4 as my CC's then 5/6/7 as production, 1-3 for army
