Bug reports and technical support. Blizzard can say all they want that posting on forums is optional and not really a part of the game... but these are two respects in which the forums are their main channel for communication. Part of the value of the forums is that you can see what's up with other people's machines, settings, and specs and see if they are encountering the same issues as you, even if the blues haven't shown up yet. If you've ever seen the Mac forums, bug reports and technical support are also often a direct line to the people who actually work on the technical side, without having to slog through the GM ticket system (in WoW) or whatever equivalent there may be in the final build of SC2. I normally don't put a lot of stock in Internet anonymity. My real name is all over the web by choice (and even though I'm posting on TL under a handle, I don't really mind if people here know who I am). I joined Facebook several years ago because the established norm of people using their real names added a touch of class to the place, which was then college-exclusive and built on closed networks, but that was before Facebook went insane. But it doesn't take a genius to figure out that requiring people's real names to show up when they're posting things like system specs is a bad idea, especially when there's no clear bug-reporting alternative that remains anonymous. And that's not even getting into how that plays into the biggest problem that many have already pointed out - that spammers are going to data-mine names like mad. I seriously don't mind if the real-name requirement remains in place for virtually everything else - people will drift to other sites anyway, and you will hear less mindless complaining about balance. Deterring people from posting - in effect, torching the place - may very well be what the Blizzard forums need. But any developer with a clue should never, ever, ever deter bug reports.

Because you could always punish trollers or spammers to write posts i don't know something like 2 weeks? Even if you don't ban them it would work well. They should look at here and figure out how things work... Because this has worked so well on the blizzard forums up to this point. No amount of moderation is enough to handle a community of that size, without exception. In the end though, I guess they should be thankful that only a small majority of their userbase uses the forums. Perhaps more will start using it as the trolls get weeded out more heavily.

The biggest concern i have (which sadly outweighs every good aspect) forcing me to not post on blizz forums from now on is Cybercriminals. Dealing with those is my daily buissines at work and i cant imagine that blizzard had a talk with their security experts. they would have yelled at them and beat them up so hard. A full forum with real names which are in some way connected with a battle.net account running possibly multiple games (i.e running WoW subs) would be a feast for scammers. Im 100% sure that A LOT of battle.net account owner have: 1. email in the format "firstname.surname@...." 2. some fucking stupid password like only their firstname 3. no clue about how dangerous this is and thats only talking about scaming battle.net accounts (which already is a worthy buissnes). next step when there is a realname, a bnet account with contact information and email address will be identity theft which hits far harder than only an striped WoW account. purchases in your name? useing your id for creditcard abuse? posting links to scam/maleware sites to your friend through linked facebook account? whatever it is .. you name it and its already out there. ofc im not saying that through real name on forums blizzard will invent those crimes but they are definatly "helping" the criminals doing their dirty work a lot easier while they put forum poster at an higher risk which many wont even notice as they have no clue.... tl;dr idea is great, less troll/flame/spam bad idea when concidering what cybercrime can do with just a real name Zira

At least TL has been lot more reasonable about this than WoW forum where all hells are breaking loose and people are posting links to ridiculous articles of people getting killed for playing video games.

Alot of forum users don't want their real name on the internetz... now how could that be? BECAUSE, it drastically reduces the way in which you can troll and act like a fucking retard, because it will have consequences. Just like in real life, you might get bitchslapped across the mouth for saying and doing stupid shit, the internet needs a form of penalty. Ever since forums got popular there has been cesspools of flaming, trolling and generally non-constructive debates and comments.... Perhaps this move will halt some of this and actually improve constructive and thoughtful ideas and debates, because people won't be so tempted to post bullshit when people know who you are.. DOWN WITH INTERNET Anonymity ! If you're too much of a pussy to take responsibility for what you say and what you do, then don't use the internet or say or do ANYTHING... prepare to face zeh consequences ![]()

If you are worried about future employers reading your forum posts (which, frankly, you should be), don't post stupid things. If you aren't doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about. My advice is polish your spelling and grammar because your boss is watching.

Only real thing to be worried about is random stalkers and such, say a girl is playing wow, people know she's a girl from ingame. If she makes a post on the blizz forum wanting to buy something or whatever and happens to also have her char selected on display what's gona happen and how annoying is that going to be ? As for this beeing cheaper or some kind of lawsuit avoidance move, i just can't believe that since i'm sure untill people would get used to something like this they will have alot of enforcing to do. IMO the only real problem with this entire concept is the fact that a person that isn't even a poster, just some random dude surfing, or a bot for that matter can pick names off their forum then spam you into submission with retarded insert your name adress and battlenet account here for a free pet mails. The quality of threads and posts on blizz forums is horibble as it is atm, they're just trying to get some semblance of civil conduct with this move. If blizz forums were any good atm we wouldn't all be posting on fan sites.

But how big of a problem is cybercrime really in terms in relation to starcraft 2 and battle.net? Sure I ackknowledge that here are SOME issues, but don't you think Blizzard will find a way to counter these problems? surely they will, you make it sound easy, when in fact it's only a minority of people getting scammed. It does not, however, decrease the seriousness of the problem for those infected, but remember that it's nigh impossible to defend against EVERY phising and scammer attack.

As a moderator on other forums I dislike if a user writes something that he/she would not say IRL. That's a great impediment in keeping a decent forum. I find it odd that most people don't feel anoyed by those kinds of posts at all.
