I've been part of forums that require you post under your real name, and they were probably the most civil places on the internet. This will reduce the amount of trolling and shitposts in the official forums. It's just a huge PR hit, that's probably not worth it. BTW, to people talking about invasion of privacy, this would never fall under any of those laws. You know what you're getting into by posting on the forums. An invasion of privacy would be Blizzard themselves giving everyone your name.

I seriously dislike the thought of having my real name out there on official forums and in games. I've already made a battle net account that only shows the first letter of my last name, and I'm considering making another one that uses an entirely fake name altogether. I don't understand what Blizzard gets out of it either. Trolls are still going to troll under fake names, and serious posters are going to be driven away. There is absolutely no benefit that I can think of. I'm seriously hoping that Blizzard revokes this change. I'm normally a massive Blizzard fanboy, but they have really dropped the ball on this one. It seems like the team handling gameplay and stuff did a great job, but the Battle.net team has been screwing up left and right.

Actually you can't change the real name associated with an account. I tried earlier today. The only way to get the real name changed is to get a new account, and if you already have games on an account, that means repurchasing them.

1) keep it the way it is and continue to look unprofessional. 2) nuke the forums altogether 3) spend a lot of resources on moderators monitoring the forums 24/7, and constantly deleting, banning and warning people. 4) force people to use their real names. Obviously 3 is the best option, but they went with 4, lets just hope the resources they save end up going into making a better product.

The whole rant has nothing to do with taking responsibility for forumtrolls, it is about the destruction of privacy. Require a battle.net account with a game to post. Hand out bans to abusers. 90% of trolls would disappear in the first few weeks. Trolls aren't gonna risk getting banned when they can't just make a new account and come back without repurchasing a game. I'm pretty sure the forums do currently require a cd key, so that much is done already. All they need to do is really step up the moderation for about a month, and bring down the banhammer hard on offenders. Everyone would fall in line or be expelled.

If there really was a company that wouldn't hire someone for playing games, I would never want to work for them in the first place. At my job I make it pretty well known I play games all the time, everyone in my group knows me as the gamer and when they ask me what I do every weekend I tell them I pretty much just play games all day and do judo.

How about a seminar for the Battlenet Forum Mods, beeing coached by TL-Mods? Do it for the sake of ESPORTS and our privacy!
