I think this is a terrible ID. If someone really wanted to come after you they have the potential to. This is made easier for people with less common names, so people with common names think they are safe right? If someone was really committed to coming after you, they would. All it takes is an IP address and they have a reasonable area to search for you, and with the forums have your real name, they can narrow it down even further. Don't believe me? Go to cmyip.com. Type it into the google search bar. It will most likely show a location that is near you. They can then google your full name and the area which they found you in. The result could be 100 but that is a lot less than several thousand isn't it. This is all hypothetical of course but it actually happened on a video game recently. Not sure if someone posted this or not but here it is http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/7771505/Video-game-fanatic-hunts-down-and-stabs-rival-player-who-killed-character-online.html. Back on topic. This is ridiculous by Blizzard. Don't know what they are trying to do but man, this really gets me.

Should YOUR CONSUMERS have to deal with it? No. Plain and simple. I was unaware that the forums were an integral part of my Starcraft II purchase. Personally I am tired of anonimity giving people on the internet the capability to behave like jerks. Besides, a name is not enough information to track someone down. And if you don't like it, don't sign up for the official forums. It's not an integral part, that doesn't add anything to your argument though. A name is plenty to track someone down. It's happened many times. Get name, facebook, use deductive reasoning. If I have to explain any farther down the line then that, then you are just not worth talking to. No one has been able to tell me why just having one name per CD-key is not enough of a deterrent. Please do. A better question is why do you think it's enough to have 1 CD key per name? It certainly didn't do crap to prevent the trolling/spamming on the beta board, why do you think it would prevent anything in retail? It wouldn't. With real names, do to the conerns brought up here, people will think twice about what they post with their real name attached to it. And the people who say they will just come up with a phony name will be in for a rude awakening when they're very quickly banned from the forums because they stick out and then when their account is hacked cannot even retrieve it because the name on it doesn't match their real name. People keep saying they'll do this, but they really won't. It's an empty threat. Most people will attach their real name to their account and just post much less often. Plenty of people have funny sounding REAL names. How is Blizzard going to Sherlock Holmes their way through that one? If this change goes through as described, I will be using a fake name. And that is coming from someone who has never trolled in their life and by Kev. My name is Kevin. It was only an empty threat when the situation wasn't real. Pretty simple. Some people will have real sounding names. They'll be allowed to post under those real sounding names until they get caught trolling, at which point they'll be banned. The problem with the point you're trying to raise is that there is the assumption that someone will make a fake name in order to troll, because honestly, there isn't much reason other than that to use your real name. Since the forums will have much less trolling, those trolls will stick out even more than they do now. People who use fake names and act honestly and appropriately will likely fall under the radar. Either way Blizzard's objective will have succeeded. There isn't much reason to make an account to troll at all because what you say is tied to your CD key. If they will be allowed to post until they got caught trolling, how is that any different then how things are now? At least in the current implementation I am not forced to give out my real name. No one has been able to convince me that the result of the battle.net forums would be any different if you were using your real name tied to your CD key, or your alias tied to your CD key. Either way, when you get caught trolling you are banned. So, again, tell me how is it any different. As I said, it's simple. People are less likely to post ridiculous things if it is linked to their real name. Discussion over. If that doesn't convince you, nothing will and your mind is already made up. Either way, that is what will happen once this goes live, and it will. Less people will post retarded shiat. You're either willfully ignorant, or you're one of the trolls who's afraid he won't be able to spam the boards with his ignorance of the game during lunchtime. Either way I'm done with you and I'm glad you're losing what you believe to be some inherent right. It's a private forum by a private company. If you don't like it, don't post. I really think that you're the ignorant one. Sure people will be less inclined to post trolly things online, but at what cost. Blizzard is already giving out your email, first, and last name. Why do you not see that this is a huge security issue? Not all of us are 13 years old with nothing to loose by giving out information other than perhaps a hacked email. No discussion is not over.

When they ask me to enter my name, can I enter anything I want or they actually have some sort of mechanisms to prove I am the person I say I am? If it's anything that has a billing system, you will have to use your real name (ie. World of Warcraft). In the case of Starcraft 2, I imagine there's nothing to prove your identity, however, as was said earlier in the thread, should you ever need some sort of assistance from Blizzard such as you account getting hacked, you will need to prove your identity with some sort of photo ID or something before they will help you. So if you don't use your real name, you do so at your own risk because if you lose your account, you lose it for good. And since CD-Keys are now tied specifically to accounts, that also means you will need to go out and buy a new copy of the game to play it again. Just because it is associated with a billing system doesn't mean you have to have a real name. B.Net has quite happily accepted credit card details with a name that doesn't match the name of the account holder for a WoW subscription in the past and in WoW there are options to pay by time card that mean you don't even have to use a credit card (although you did have to enter one when first establishing your account). The real problem comes, as has already been pointed out, if your account gets compromised and you need to prove your identity to get it back.

Also this still makes people easier to ignore due to centralized accounts (Bnet forums have always had the ignore button lately, however it only ignored one character on the account. This allows you to blanket ignore bigots, which is always a plus). I'd rather have my racists be accountable for their choice of words than anonymous and malicious, but that's just me.

+ Show Spoiler + With the recent announcement of the real life ID forum integration, how much will you take before you decide to, straight out, leave the Blizzard community and/or boycott Blizzard products? It might sound extreme, but seriously, there has been too many twists and turns that Blizzard has been making recently, that it seems like as if they're changing their whole stance on the gaming community, making it more about the money. Please allow me to summarize the events that brought on multiple threads of controversy. LAN functionality Unconcern about chatrooms Removal of friend message from B.Net Making it difficult to add non-rl friends on B.Net 2.0 without revealing real ID Console-ish interface for SCII No cross realm play Facebook Integration Making all forum IDs real IDs Granted, some of the above have its reasons, such as protection vs piracy. The thing is, I want to know how many of you are on the edge of abandoning Blizzard, and if not, how much more you'll take. Personally, if this were to happen to any other company, I would abandon them for any one of the above reasons. But, this is Blizzard we're talking about here. I could take some more shit thrown at me, seeing as how much I love their games before,....but I gotta say though, I'm not exactly far from considering the boycott method either. of course, I can see why, I'm clearly taking away their sales with my topic, lol.

The company that made the movie is a documentary. They gave the video to google and told them to ensure it wasn't being posted in its entirety without realizing what was going to happen to all the hitler videos. They realized afterwards that they liked the videos and didn't intend for them to get taken down, as they are basically free viral marketing and people enjoy it, so they had them reinstated pretty quickly afterwards (like, within 24 hours). As a side note, the reason why is also because its much more effective for companies to place ads for you to buy the product on the side than take the video down, because after watching you may be interested in purchasing whatever it is you watched (especially in the case of music). Which makes sense and is a much more enforceable policy (you also benefit from free advertising). But I digress. Just letting you know ![]()

There's also no confirmation of this on the wow-hack sites, or really anywhere else. Which leads to the point that he probably photoshopped it because he likes trolling and fear mongering. Probably because there's no ramifications for doing either since it's an anonymous forum and his trolling isn't linked to his real name which would probably discourage him.
