Even then, you'd think content (just in simple MPQ files) could be extracted and and imported into beta versions though. (new units, etc.)

The biggest patch in the beta (the one with the map editor 3v3 and 4v4) was released the 20th of may. In other words, the editor was the only thing they were waiting for before going gold. Sounds likely imo.

I don't see how it could check with the blizzard servers before you even install anything to begin with, and I don't believe blizzard ever said it would require an internet connection to verify to play just single player. That combined tells me its probably either a fake, some specialized internal testing version as others have mentioned, or its testing the system clock to see if its allowed to install yet. On the other hand if it is getting the permission to install from a blizzard server the people who do Warez will probably be able to spoof the server to permit an install. That is false. They can check online without installing the game, and they have said you need an internet connection to install the game.

Is logging in to Battle.net version 2.0 mandatory even for Single-Player Games? A. Yes. StarCraft II does require an online connection and you must login the first time you play. We are in the middle of adding an "Offline" feature which allows you to play the Campaign offline if you, for example, are traveling and want to play on a laptop. Playing while connected allows your progress in the campaign to be saved online to your account. This means if you switch to a different computer to play you can pick up from where you were. Blue post on battlenet beta forum Edit: I'm not so technical but I guess that means you can install but won't be able to play without unlocking it in some way online?

Dustin explained "you need to connect once to install the game." While singleplayer will be available offline, installation must have an internet connection in order to proceed. You are also required to have or signup for a Battle.net account in order to install the game. All achievements and friends lists etc will be available as soon as you logon, but the actual single player game is available anyway.
