I wonder if anyone ever tested how far away you can hear noises of opposing players battling in the fog of war? A lot of times you are playing an FFA when you hear tanks firing outside of what you have vision of on the map. You can hear battles in the fog of war. Are some units noisier in the fog of war than others? Can you tell how far away the units are when you hear them? This might give you an advantage. Is it only dying units you hear? Do your own units, when they have range that exceeds their own vision range, have any relationship to what you can hear in the fog of war? Thank you.

I think it is has to do with Sieged Siege Tanks having a range of 12 but vision of only 10. Remember Sieged Siege Tanks need a floating building that has vision of units to be able to kill enemy units slightly further away than they normally could.

In Broodwar,

Hearing range = Unit Range not just vision range.

also you hear pylon/cannons often that prevent you from being killed by cannon rush ...
What if their vision range is further than there attack range? like all melee buildings ... Scann?
I mean you also can hear Dt right ... Stimm etc. how does that all relate?

It is screen and a half or something like that, if I remember my tests correctly.
Your screen needs to be there to hear the sound; if it isn't you won't hear anything even if you have units nearby.
If your screen is at location that can hear the sound, but you do not have units there, you do not hear anything.

Think you don't need view to actually hear the sound, it goes a bit further than unit sight...I can be wrong, though; since I was testing on view of a replay rather than the actual game.

I tested it out.

Sieged Siege Tanks, even though they won't see any units, they can see unit death sprites at range 12 in the fog of war.

Sieged Siege Tanks, even though they won't see any units, they can see unit attack sprites, see unit death sprites, and hear unit attack sprites at range 11.

This is not only useful for FFA games but also 1v1. Here are some examples of why it is good in 1v1:
I think siege tank sieging and transports unloading like dropships, shuttles, overlords are unit sprites you could hear in theory with this. I have not had a chance to test that yet though.

Leonix are you pretty sure about this one? Buildings don't have any range so it shouldn't be them that cause this I take it.

How can you be sure of anything really... I can just say that specially on fastess i have heart often when they build a pylon or cannons. I have also heart the dropsound. Eithe way it is diffcult to be 100 procent sure, since i have not played with sound for a long time. Would this question poped earlier i could have been sure.
Either way shouldnt this be tested in a real game? Instead of replay...

Ok, it seems like
-Sound stay for a brief moment even when you leave the sound area, are where you can hear it.
- Vision range and hear range seems to have some connection -> hatched hatchery hears and sees more
- You can be like a screen away and still hear stuff from where the sound come
- Sound seems to be connected from where the sound comes from. You hear louder when you are nearer to the place it comes from, instead of the units/building that perceives the sound
- Tank and siege tank no difference

There's a famous TvZ all-in, I think on reverse LT.

I think it was Casy vs JulyZerg maybe? he faked FE by sending minerals to mine his natural, but actually went 2 rax all-in. The overlord just saw SCVs mining but didn't go deep enough to see if there was actually a CC there.
