None of the windows commands respond ie: alt-tab, ctrl alt del
He had to force manual shut down every time.
One thing he noticed though is that when he turned Gadgets off, there haven't been any crashes.
I hope that information can help in some way.

On the Microsoft technet forum there is also a discussion about this, Squall_Leonhart69r seems to have get to the problems core i have done further looking into this with multiple applications which make use of double buffering or triplebuffering (and vsync). The results are that these applications when run in DDraw fail to lock the primary buffer and result in Screen tearing and also the drawing of the windows startmenu orb and flashing taskbar buttons to display on top of the application in fullscreen. Had the primary framebuffer locked, this would NOT occur. That said. This is a windows 7 bug spanning both X32 and x64, and video drivers have no bearing what so ever. The same applications work fine on Vista. The only thing i can think of is these applications are displaying the behavior of an application manifested for Windows 7, rather then older versions and so are unable to lock the primary buffer. more info here http://www.codenamewindows.com/?p=58

If you get freezes, I would suggest hitting enter / space a few times to dismiss any non-visible error dialogs, followed by alt+tab then enter / space and alt+tab twice followed by enter / space. BW should not be able to completely lock up your PC, it just seems that way since you're unable to interact with anything else.

1.Close winamp. 2.Go into NVIDIA control panel and set Starcraft to use only one GPU(I'm using a gtx 295 so if you have a single GPU gfxcard this one won't be necessary) 3.Turn vertical sync off for starcraft in NVIDIA control panel.(doubt this one matters) 4.Go to your Starcraft directory, right click on starcraft.exe, properties, compatibility, check mark all boxes except disable desktop comp and disable display scaling. 5.Open notepad. copy/paste: cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 D:\"SC"\"Launcher"\"Launcher.exe" ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 cd C:\SC\StarCraft\ rem cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 D:\"SC"\"StarCraft.exe" rem Wait for the game to quit, press Enter to continue pause start explorer.exe exit Replace those paths with what you have for said files, save as .bat file. Now when you wish to play start SC by clicking the file you created, it kills explorer until you stop playing. You can also create a shortcut of the file and make it look like SC so it looks prettier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm about to go play SC all day so if I crash I'll edit this post with a something like 'fuck my life', if this is still here then it's working. If you need help with any of the steps please post the question here and you might want to pm me.

I build this computer in January with windows vista x64 and it has yet to crash on me, or fail to be able to run a program. If windows 7 is an improvement it will be an awesome OS. Very true, I know someone who's had Vista for 2 years? and he's never had a single problem. Win7 the only problem I see is that when you try to move your files they get deleted. Either way I stick with XP. It's reliable and it makes a funny face if you look at it sideways.

Everytime I click on multiplayer > expansion, BroodWar crashes and gives me this error : The instruction at 0x004dd66e referenced memory at 0x00000018. The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the program. Any help in getting this to work would be appreciated... I don't mind somebody remotely accessing my computer to get it to work either.

i think i may have 'run as administrator' checked in my launcher shortcut, but i am not 100% sure. i know i don't use any other compatibility settings though - tried a few and didnt find any of them helped. about the crashing - i've had that too. in my case, it would often crash at the end of a game i re-downloaded it from my bnet profile thinking my first dl was corrupt, uninstalled and reinstalled it several times etc... but i think what actually helped was that i used 'run as administrator' from the rightclick menu on the first run to update it properly, and it got ok. if you're still having problems, you could also try to do the update with a manually downloaded patch instead of by connecting to bnet, maybe again with the 'run as administrator' trick.
