Yeah, like if I wanna play SCBW online with no lag on my laptop with linux, I'll make it happen.

Seriously, there are few games you can't play on linux, using ether wine of a VM. SC BW and SC2 can both be played perfectly using just wine (but B.net interface looks really bad in BW, with overlapping text and staff, that's why I use a VM).

But, of course, most games require some workaround.
What's a quote anyway?

then again the real problem is the bnet interface rendering, which is a massive involvement.
but also...even if a "ddraw.dll" like solution solves the bnet problem (and everything else) it will still remain, "banned" from the official servers.

the battlenet screen is almost completely GDI, ddhack doesn't implement it and cncddraw doesn't offset the resolution differences to remap the cursor area's on screen.

you find the drivers for me?

Sure. I'm smart enough to know how to use google.

edit: This is how I play SC BW online.

1. I installed debian with just the base system, then install what I need.
2. Installed a VM with xP in virtualbox. Now, since the linux kernel includes most drivers, I don't need to look for anything, just install a package of virtualbox.
3. Install SC BW.
4. Play online.

You can change your default screen resolution to 640x480, so that when you open the game in the VM, it is actually in full screen mode. I do it before starting the X server, every time i want to play.

1. Finding drivers for my netbook was a huge bitch to find, I had to use similar drivers and use trial and error (microphone still not working).

Changing the screen resolution myself to play bw? I can do this in Win7 with wMode, but the point is, that's annoying, I want an automatic resolution switch on Alt-Tab and when I exit the game, so I can browse with a normal resolution when I'm gaming.

I tried almost every patch I could find to make StarCraft work not slow (DIB engine f.e.) with my Linux, but none worked. I also tried the VirtualBox solution, but couldn't be fucked to switch the resolution myself, thats like playing with Win7 in compatibility mode, just annoying.

Do you own a copy of WinXP? Not everyone does and not everyone wants to pirate it, so you shouldn't imply that people are incompetent just because they don't want to pirate WinXP.

This.

i find it interesting that people can sit in front of their computer all day and play but dont bother to find out how to make stuff work or figure out workarounds.

Are you including me in these "people"? If you do you should maybe read what kinda workarounds I've done to make it working on Win7 and Wine. But hey, hating is always the best, right?

If you switch your desktop resolution every time you use your virtual machine, I'd say my auto res changer is a way better workaround and works almost perfect for me.

You can write a simple script to do that.
That's right, after reading a manual for 10 minutes you will be able to write an executable script.

Linux is not about patches dude. If you wanna system where everything will work perfectly, you'll have to create one LOL
If you want to play SC in an OS that perfectly compatible with it, and don't wan't to buy a copy of XP, then you might want to buy a copy of Win 98.
What's a quote anyway?

XP Mode cannot run starcraft at default settings, desktop mode switching is disabled because of the remote integration, you can resolve this by disabling Integration Features

this and other methods are listed at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprovirt/thread/12a17fa5-ddab-4480-8973-1a13bfb2e8fd

end sidebar.exe
end explorer.exe
set the highest running program on NOT cpu 0 or NOT on 0 1 and 2 if you have more.
set broodwar.exe + chaoslauncher.exe (if u have it) + iccuplauncher.exe (if u have it) to cpu 0
(You set the affinity (aka core) by right clicking the .exe in task manager)

DO NOT run winamp or other programs that take over your audio stuff (idk why but it sometimes crashes if you do have those things open)
(Vent and Teamspeak are usually okay though)

On Win 7 x64

~~ You can restart the explorer or sidebar if you want to by ctrl + alt + deleting and going to file -> run and typing the name of the exe's (ex: explorer.exe)

1.Start BW
2.Control+shift+escape
3.go to processes tab
4.close explorer process (this will fix colors and crashes, at least it does for me)
5 shift+ tab back to BW and play
6. when done control+shift+escape again
7.file->newtask/run->explorer

It's so weird, I experience no problems with W7 and BW. Could it also be a hardware compatibility issue, such as specific GPU win7 drivers disagreeing with BW?

Would be interesting to see. I currently use Nvidia 470 on my laptop, 480 on my main PC, both running Win7 x64.

Its not anything to do with audio applications, its all to do with GDI applications trying to steal and relock the palette.

and your solution is bogus because these 2 applications aren't the only ones to intrude, CSRSS also does, and i'd like to see you close that without crashing the windows session.

applying the ddraw compatibility keys via w7ddpatcher or dd compatiblity tool work, but don't resolve the crash, which your solution is also not a fix to.

.

No, it occurs on any chipset platform with any vendors display drivers / hardware.

the combination of GDI apps running in the background increase the chance of it happening.

like for instance if you run WMP12 with one of the ancient gdi visualizations from XP times., you're guaranteed a freeze within minutes.

I have the same problem, I looked through the thread but found no solution. Any ideas?

Mind telling me what it is before I go downloading it?

And compatibility mode doesn't work, trust me, I've tried.
